wagon roads and park trains In the adjacent county are nu merous mines both gravels and lodes limited in extent and fairly remunerative The forests are too limited for long con tin ued lumbering The Ian ds are fully as fertile as those of the lower valley and Equalities of prodncts infinitely superior As to climate there can not be found Better orrearth With mining unenjoiried and undestroyed this neighborhood craves only this for its development Bangor Ten years have added fifty people to the population of this little town which now has 250 inhabitants Daring the decade a hotel a blacksmith shop a distillery and twelve dwellings have been erected The business of the town is in Cattle hay and fruit Among the leading houses are the following Alien Gov general merchandise Mrs Potter and Mrs Countryman hotel proprietresses Dueeins Brothers blacksmiths John Kelson shoemaker Rehfuess distiller Those who have contributed most to the prosperity of the town are Allen bv general building and improvement Upon land and Osgood by planting large quantities of fruit and maintaining trade with the mountains The town has no nulroad communication the nearest station being a considerable distance away The country surrounding Bangor is rich and varitd with timber land on the hills and great fertility in the valleys where fruit nuts and oranges are crown in abundance The Blue Lead which thirty years ago fave forth considerable gold is again bang prospected Money is greatly needed and the people feel that the future of their town will be what it is now healthy moral and prosperous CALAYER AS COUNT This county sustaina within its borders some of the best known mining camps in the State such as San Andreas Murphys Angels camp Copperopblls Sheep Ranch etc While the rich placer mines have been nearly exhausted there are a number of good quartz mines that are successfully worked In the foothills Is much good fruit land while in the mountains AMADOR Size Ni 1 5 its choice and abundant horticultural products Talley Sprloga This place is at the terminus of the Lodi branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad and was first laid out in a88Vno having a population of abont 10a Among the leading citizens are TJ Frencb Johnson Lamb Berry Smith Pattee Brothers and Missener The section tributary to this point is of considerable importance both for agriculture and Training Several gold mines are worked profitably and about twenty tons of copper are shipped daily The Satellite the Gwin and the Slate Creek gold mines are all paying properties Considerable grain and frmt is also produced COLUSA C0TJNTY This is another of the old counties and untiLef year ago was a large one Including some 1700000 acres The last Legislature however authorized its division and the formation of Glenn county from the northern Half of Colusa For years Colusa bore the honor of being the largest wheat producing county In the J3tate immense crops being raised on the fertile land of uETvi rvi Vi st I i the Sacramento Talley On the west the county reaches well Into the Coast range and there is considerable mineral wealth mostly undeveloped Several extensive irrigation enterprises are under way and it is expected they will stimulate the growthof the county very largely The population of Colusa in 1880 was 13118 and by the census of 1890 It was 14612 The assessed valuation has decreased from 17875773 in 1580 to 13117731 in 18SL The figures on population include the portion set apart as Glenn conn tjr In taxable wealth the figures for 1891 exclude that section Colusa In the decade just closed Colusa shows an increase of population from 1200 to 1400 The advance in the appearance of the town has been much more radical however modern buildings having taken the place of the old style of architecture to a great extent The most notable buildings in the city are the Courthouse County Jail and Hall of Records the Colusa House and Neil ODonnells hotel Morris building Cooke Mitchell building Washington block Pearts corner Colusa County Bank Catholic convent Masonic Hall the Colusa cannery flour mills a four story building the Phoenix block and many other library a building rent free for five years Also to Dr Strentzel Bunker Thomas and Others are owed the gas works To the energies of Thomas and McNear the present system of water works are due and to the ladies ot Mar tihez the Free library As a means of transportation there are two railroads the Southern Pacific and the California and Nevada and seventy five miles of coast line gives facilities by water for sailing vessels and the steamers of the California Transportation Company Coal mining is carried on at Black Diamond and Stuartville the Output being about 28000 tons each per year but the county is mainly agricultural given to the raising of fruit grain bay and Stock The county needs competitive railroads through the interior valleys and the building up of the water lront Martinez
