brings a capable company and a pretty chorus The story Is of a young London swell Lord Mont fort who has come to the throne of Sauterelle A Parisian Countess who wants to marry the new King makes up as a poor peasant and captures his affections so badly that he does not care anything about his coronation or his kingdom He turns himself into a peasant and his valet Blossoms Frank Daniels part is crowned in his place Blossoms has been formerly a trolley car conductor and all he knows is ringing up fares He naturally gets into trouble especially as his sweetheart Is there and it is a relief when the real King takes hold of his duties The piece is elaborate in scenery and costumes A great array of people will be seen and handsome dresses Some old favorites are In the company Grace Orr shipping wild geese to this city have been for a long time puzzled to find a scheme which would enable them to make holes in the hard adobe lands that border the Sacramento er without the necessitj of packing pick and shovel from place to place One of the thoughtful goose killers experimented with dv namlte and the scheme has proved verv successful The hunters secrete themselves In the deep holes around which are placed tor a distance of twenty or thlrtv ards a large number of animate and inanimate geese decovs The wild birds unaware of the shooters presence light among the decovs and when the pump guns open fire frequently as many as fifty geese fall before the flocK gets out of range of the guns Dobson and Al Berryessa are down at Arvlso sculling for ducks The last named hunter has been known to scull his boat within gunshot of a flock of sleeping ducks near the bay shore and pick out as manv as a dozen birds from the band Otto Feudner bagged seventeen fine woodcock jesterday which adjourned meeting of the Board of Education held yesterday afternoon for the purpose John Kelly was appointed messenger to the Superintendent of Schools vice John OBrien removed and Thomas Eagan was elected storekeeper Kelly Is a relative of the Superintendent elect Miss A Castlehun making application to be retired on an annuity her request was referred to the committee The resignation of Miss Castlehun as principal of the Humboldt Primary School was then read and accepted Miss Marie Ruef of the Garfield School was appointed to the position vacated by Miss Castlehun Transfers were made as follows Miss A Wolf from the Adams to the Rlncon Mrs Hill from the John Swett to the Henry Durant Miss McKlnne from the Peabody to the Everett and Miss Haggerty to the Peabody Miss Stevenson was assigned to the John Swett Roncovierl moved that Miss Nellie Sullivan vice principal of the Mission Grammar School be made principal of the Clement Mark nominated Miss Helen McFarland of the Clement and Denman nominated Charles Ham vice principal of the Polytechnic School The Board then proceeded to ballot and on the third ballot Miss Sullivan was elected The salary of the supervisor of manual training was reduced from 200 to 160 a month and Roncovierl nominated Doyle for the position Mark said he had been looking for a candidate and that he had been unable to find any one in San Francisco whom he thought competent He then went elsewhere he said and had selected Frank Ball formerly of Pasadena as a suitable person Three ballots being taken with no choice the matter was taken under here yesterday for the south After making a short stay in Los Angeles he goes to New Orleans and to some of the Eastern cities where he has engagements His presence here has given a great impetus to the game in local chess circles and his visit has been a most satisfactory one He demonstrated that he is a wonderfu player and he made himself very popular here At a special meeting of the Mechanics Institute Chess and Checker Club Dr Lasker was unanimously elected an honorary member Asked to address the club Dr Lasker briefly thanked It for the honor conferred and hoped his visit would be productive of much good to the club At the San Francisco Whist and Chess Club Tuesday evening Dr Lasker played simultaneously against twenty three players The champion was In fine fettle and and during the seance he played two games of checkers with the champion checker player of the Pacific Coast An gell Angell won one game and lost the other Of the chess games Lasker won nine and lost two Griffith won his game This is the second time Griffith has won from Lasker in simultaneous play and proves that he is a worthy opponent of the worlds champion Lasker also lost the consultation game against Neville and Benjamin To the three players Just mentioned Dr Lasker gave a copy of his well known work Common Sense In Chess for scoring against him During his visit here Dr Lasker played in all sixty eight simultaneous games of which he won fifty lost five and drew thirteen He played Ave blindfolded games of which he won four and lost one As has been published he played one match game with Dr Lovegrove which he lost He also lectured on three occasions Dr Lasker did not win from Manson In the simultaneous exhibition at the Western Addition Chess Club as has been stated Owing to the lateness of the hour Mr Manson who by the way resides across the bay was unable to finish the game In question and Dr Lasker conceded a draw The following game between Emmanuel Lasker worlds champion and Dr Lovegrove of the Mechanics Institute Chess and Checker Club was played at Dr Lasker re quest under strict time limit of twenty moves per hour and at Us close Dr Lasker remarked that he could not at any time during the game have forced a win This is the second regular match game which Dr Lasker has lost in the United States during his present visit It gives Dr Lovegrove and the Institute
