NEWS A9 HONOLULU STAR-BULIETIN MONDAY, APRIL 29, 2002 THIS WEEK obituaries Neighborhood Boards ruth handler 1 91 6-2002 Barbie creator wanted doll to stand for women's choices ALEXANDER UBEO 1S50-2C02 General helped preserve leadership in Russia Alexander Lebed: Helped defeat a coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991 liked to play with paper cutout dolls of teenagers and career women. Mattel's male ad executives were unimpressed, but several years later, Handler got the doll into production. Her concept was modeled on a sexy German precursor called Lilli, based on a comic strip. Barbie was more innocent. The 11 12-inch-tall plastic toy was a fresh-faced Midwesterner with a ponytail and a black-and-white striped swimsuit.

Barbie debuted in 1959 at the American Toy Fair in New York City. She was an instant hit, and in the first year 351,000 dolls were sold at $3 each. Barbie went on to make a fortune for Mattel, which also sold outfits and accessories, not to mention Barbie's boyfriend Ken, named for Handler's son; her little sister, Skipper; and pals Midge and Christie. Handler struggled with breast cancer and had a mastectomy In 1970. She began to campaign for cancer awareness.

The disease also prompted her second career. Unable to find a decent prosthetic breast, Handler created her own, called Nearly Me, and formed a company to market it. She fitted Betty Ford for one after the former first lady had a mastectomy. The company earned more than $1 million in sales and was sold in 199.1. had been incarcerated in Josef Stalin's prison camps for being late for work.

During the August 1991 hardline coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, coup leaders ordered Lebed's troops to surround the Moscow stronghold where Yeltsin, the Russian president, was defying the coup. But Lebed refused to send in his forces. Praised by reformers when the coup collapsed, speeding the breakup of the Soviet Union, Lebed quickly disappointed his admirers, saying that he "could not care less for democracy," but also could not bring himself to kill Russians. Later, when running for the Krasnoyarsk governorship, he answered critics who portrayed him as an incipient dictator by saying his heroes were Eisenhower and Charles de Gaulle, military men who became democratic leaders. Boris Nemtsov, leader of the Union of Right Forces party, said on Ekho Moskvy radio after Lebed's death that he had governed Krasnoyarsk democratically, allowed an active opposition and steered clear of the corruption endemic in Russian politics.

ALL MAKES MODELS Associated Press MOSCOW Alexander Lebed, the gruff former general who helped defeat the 1991 hard-line Soviet coup, stave off a Communist challenge to Russian President Boris Yeltsin five years later and end the 1994-96 war in Chechnya, was killed yesterday in a helicopter crash. He was 52.

Lebed was fatally injured when the Mi-8 helicopter he was riding in hit a power line and crashed in foul weather in Krasnoyarsk, the austere and gargantuan Siberian region he had governed since 1998. At least seven others aboard were killed. Lebed was as complex and contradictory as his country: a warrior praised for peacemaking, who once sneered at democracy but later lauded generals who embraced it such as Dwight Eisenhower and a tough guy whose graceful surname means swan. A paratrooper with a pugilist's face, he was admired by Russians for his patriotism and for his no-nonsense remarks, delivered in a bass voice so deep it seemed to come from the earth below him. "He who laughs last is the one who shot first" was characteristic of the remarks that charmed many and chilled others.

Lebed was born in the blue-collar southern city of Novocherkassk on April 20, 1950. In 1962 he saw troops shoot striking laborers there. His father tion was provided by the mortuary for an obituary published yesterday. Glenn Skeen, 80, of Kaneohe, died April 19. He was born in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

By Danny Pollock Associated Press LOS ANGELES RUth Handler, wlKocreated Barbie, the world's most popular doll and an American icon that helped shape girls' dreams while infuriating feminists, has died. She was 85.

Handler, who also co-founded the Mattel toy company, died Saturday morning at Century City Hospital of complications from colon surgery she underwent three months ago, said Elliot Handler, her husband. Since Handler's creation, named for her daughter Barbara, was introduced in 1959, it has become a touchstone of cultural politics. The impossibly well-endowed doll her original figure would be about 39-18-33 if she were human has drawn the ire of feminists, inspired artists and intrigued academics around the world. Barbie even was placed in the official "America's Time Capsule" buried in 1976. The original blue-eyed, blond fashion model has morphed over the decades into a variety of ethnic looks and has had many careers, from astronaut to veterinarian.
