from the roof of his home about 415 oclock this afternoon and received Injuries from which he died a little more than an hour later Members of the family refuse totxpress ah opinion as to whether the fall was due to accident or Intent but some circumstances point strongly to suicide Brodt who was 23 yeaip of age was accounted morose and rather eccentric and cared but little for the soclety of companions He was employed In running a stationary engine for his father who is manager for the Ralston Health Food Company This afternoon he was at home with his brother and sister He failed to respond to the call for dinner and could not be found in the house by his brother and sister who finally sat down to the meal without him Breed a lodger in the house says that he heard some one Star of October 7th Mr Baume visited the United States last summer as a commissioner of the University College Council to study American university methods and Ideals He visited Berkeley on his return Journey to New Zealand and was greatly struck with the organization and methods of the University of California tae spent a juomber oi days at the University under the guidance of Professor Henry Senger and Director A Leuschner of the students observ atory The duties of the president of the university struck Mr Baume as a particularlygood feature of the American university system The president of the university says his report is responsible for the entire teaching and administration of the university and Is chosen rather for his reputation as an administrator than as a scholar To htm is intrusted for all practical purposes the appointment of the members of the teaching faculty He seeks to gather around him men of mark in the various branches of learning by such means attracting students to the university arid endeavors to give It a high position in the educational world It will be seen therefore how the standing of such a university depends largely upon the personality of its president The University of California is an integral part of the public educational system of the State and as such it completes the work done In the public school Mr Baume commends the system of accrediting secondary schools by which he says the educational interests of the State are knitted closely together and the quality of the work done In the secondary schools is improved The power thus given he says is carefully exercised by the principal of the accredited school for the career of the student so recommended reflects on his school and is to some extent a crtterioh of the work done thereat and the fitness or otherwise of the school to remain upon the accredited list a distinction which is of moment to all schools and of actual monetary value to private schools Mr Baume applies the conclusions which he has drawn from the University of California in recommendations concerning the adaptability of these methods to conditions In New Zealand He speaks admiringly of the general
