of mis Plays In the third tram and falling en Pitcher Mike Cann when hits mtint runs Manager Sharpea Oaks toolt the crack St Marys College team Into camp at Freeman Park Oakland again yesterday afternoon to the tune of 8 to the collegians Just mining oeing ihut out by the narrowest margin possible St Marys lone tally came In the ninth with two men down A good slied crowd was on the Job Sharps sent Pope one of His recruits to the hilltop at the outset and the newcomer galloped along for five frames In great style allowing only one hit Not a college runner got past second base during Popes regime and onljrone arrived at the keystone canvas safely Bohen took up the urdeu when Sharpe chased Pope to the clubhouse and given porfect support would have blanked the Intercollegiate champions He retired ten via the strike out route and held them to four singles two of which came in the ninth and with the aid of two passes forced over the collegians first and only run Mike Cann St Marys big southpaw who leaves today to Join Harry Wol vertons New York Americans was on the firing line for the raw raw boys and outside of a healthy young smile and his glove he displayed practically nothing In passing it might be stated that Cann was the guest of honor at a party on the night previous at which he was presented with a diamond ring and gold watch by his admiring friends at the Oakland school All of which may or may not have had something to do with Canns poor showing and in fact with the poor showing of the entire St Marys crew The Oak started scoring In the sec ond when Wllkenson was safe on Leggetts error at first and went all the way around oh Hilles two bagger against the left field wall In the next Innlnir four Oaks crossed the rubber thanks largely to a pair of bonehead plays by the St Marys ln flelders After Pope had taken his alloted three healthles and sat down Cook walked snd moved up a peg when Bill Leard singled through the Infield Izsy Hoffman poked a hot one at Flti slmmonB who threw to Guignl at second to heart off Leard but the St Marys second basemJVi let tho ball get Hway from him and Cook by throwing In the high galloped across Lear 1 moving up on the throw In to catch Cook at the plate Not to be outdone by Cook Lieard stole home while Outfielder Tognl was wheeling tho ball back Into the Infield troy hit to Leggett who threw to Quiu ni at first and again the second baseman allowed the slippery thing to get away from him Hoffman going to third on the mlscue Zacher slammed out a single scoring Isiy and Coy pulled up safely at third while the college Inflelders were looking up the rule on Who shall cover third when the third baseman forgets to do so Wllkerson kept up the good work by sending a nice single to right scoring Coy for tho fourth run of the inning Zacher a moment later was caught off third Simpson to Wallace for the third out In the fifth the Oaks added another brace of runs Hoffman led off with a screamer up against the rlght tleld fence that went for only a single when Iizy caught his spikes In the canvas at first and fell flat on his face Patterson batting for Coy was safe when Ieggett let Simpsons throw get away from him Hoffman advancing on the play Zacher laid down a perfect bunt on which Hoffman raced home from second wrhen Simpson went Into the diamond after the ball Patterson pulling up at third from where he was squeezed in by Wilkenson on the next pitched ball In the eighth Hllle drew a pass and scored from second on Cooks screaming two bagger The stands were about empty when the collegians annexed their lone run in the ninth Bohen passed both Simpson and Fltsslmmons the first two to face him and Gulvnl hit to Bohen forcing Simpson Boien whiffed Rem mer but Wallace wirh two down and two men on singled orlng Flttslm mone Pitcher Pope made a blf hit with the fans He worked like well oiled machinery as did Rohrer Shcrpes new catcher Each man was glvn a big hand on his first frlp to the plate Bohen started badly upon relieving Pope and walked the first two collegians and then did the rlght abut face set and struck out the next three to face him Today the Oaks Infield will work out at March 27 A double romance that began at tho University of Maine five years ago had a happy culmination In Portland today when Miss Julia Folsom of Auburn Me and Miss Florence Topllff of Portland Me were married to Carey and James Wallace both in business In Portland Carey 4nd Wallace were college chums and there met and wooed the two co eds they married today Together they came West to moke their fortunes Before they left the college town however each had secured yea from the maiden he loved and a promise to wait A few weeks ago the long wait ended and tho young men sent for their DE FOREST whose name Is linked with the Invention of wireless telegraphy and who has recently resided In California In connection with hlsworkfor the Federal Telegraph Company was yesterday placed under arrest on a Federal Indictment charging him together with other members of the Radio Telephone Company with fraudulent use of the malls In advertising and selling tho stock of that company Dr De Forest was admitted to bond In the amount of 110000 his pressnt associates In the Federal Telegraph Company being his sureties and did not have to spend the night behind bars This Isnt pleasant De Forest remarked as he sat In the Marshals of fice lit the PostofBce building after having been brought from Palo Alto by Deputy Marshal Fitzgerald But It Isnt altogether a surprise After the arrest of the other members of the company 1 expected at least that I would have to go to New York to Testify In the case DENIES KNOWLEDGE OF FKAlD He admitted that there may have been fraud In connection with the management of the Radio Company but claimed that he had no knowledge of the methods eiflployed In disposing of the stock My connection with the company I was rather that of an expert and In ventor he said The stock I held in the Radio Company I received for the use of tho patents I stand to lose more than any ono else I have no intention of resisting removal proceedings I am ready to go to New York whenever the rase is ready for trial but I would prefer to remain here and ro on with my work until they are ready In New York for the trial But neither Darby nor I had anything to do with the selling of the stock Tpat wue first given under contract to the KIhchI Company anil tills contract was afterward sold by It to the Ellsworth Company 1 never paid any attention to the circulars they sent out If they claimed that the messages could not be read by other operators they were wrong I never would have made such a statement VALVE OF THE PATENTS On one point though I want to ppenk positively The value of the patents held by the Radio Telephone Company Is fully equal to the nmpunt of the cnpltal stock of that company I consider that the telephone patentH which the Radio Company purchased from John Stone Stone are of great value No wireless telephones can be ueed without Infringing upon these patents At the present time the Radio Company Is dormant But even If It remains so these patents will pay the full value of the stock I am convinced that there was fraud I know It now although 1 did not before I dont mean that statement to apply to the circulars sentout by the EllMworth Company but to the aotlon of Smith In taking money from the treasury whleh had been received from what we all understood was treasury stock The Indictments against De ForeM and his associates were presented by the United Stales Grand Jury in the District Court for the Southern district of New York on March loth of this year The persons named as co defendantsdefendants are James Dunlop Smith Samuel Darby and Elmer Burllngame all Radio Company wa paying dividends out of net profits earned In the corn merclal operation of a wlrtlesj system and that the stockholders would make great gains without possibility of loss Troubles are not coming singly for Inventor Do Forest married Mss Nora Blateh thedaughter of a leadlsg suffragist lome years ago snd the result was divorce proceedings simulta neously begun by husband and wife In July of this year the wife alleging cruelty because she was not allows to return from Europe on a slow boat when Dr De Forest was In a hurryt and the husband complaining that Ms wlfo taught the baby to say Votea lor women Before had learned to say Papa and Mamma De Forest was at ono time connected with the Cnlted Wireless Comnany which he says Is still using hl patents and that all he received when he left that company was the right to use these patents with other concerns The Radio Telephone Company waa the patent orflanlzatlon which then took up the De Forest patents Do Forest being a director and vice presidentpresident Several subsldary corporations were organized In different parts of the country and the system was installed on several linuse of steamships on the Atlantic and one some of the Kovernment transports Later tKe North American Wireless Corporation iook over a majority of the stock of the Radio Telephone Company
