The sport of kings has advanced with gigantic strides In the past three Tears In California This State has long been recognized as great breeding point but San Francisco has never attained any prestige asa racing center until quite recently Turfmen have heard about the Grand Prix of Paris Ci the English Derby the Suburban and Brooklyn handicaps the American Derby of Chicago and other classic races of the turf bat San Francisco has never figured This will all be remedied jla the near future San Francisco will iuive certain classic events that are bound to attract attention all over the world One of the grandest race courses In America has just been completed at Ingleslde at a cost of almost a quarter of a million dollars There are probably several more elaborate courses in the East There is Morris Park for instance It Is built on a much grander plan but it is extremely doubtful If It Is as well adapted for racing as the new track just constructed by the Pacine Coast Jockey Club San Fran cisco can certainly boast of an Ideal 1 race track No money has been spared In Its construction and Eastern horse men are unanimous in pronouncing the JL Ingleslde track second to none for racing purposes Probably two of the most enthusiastic He Jialls from Memphis Tenn where ti he officiated aa secretary of the Jockey iChib city Itlsthe moiBtm5d He Jialls from Memphis Tenn where ti he officiated aa secretary of the Jockey IClub in that city Irts themost modern track I ever saw said the visitor from the South yesterday It corn lines all the good qualities of tne best tracks In this country The arrangement of the grand stand is an Improvement on all that I have seen There are larger grand stands to be sure but none where a better view of a race can be obtained than at Ingleslde Joe Murphy who has done turf reporting for several big Eastern dailies and is thoroughly familiar with racing and race tracks is very enthusiastic over the California track I never saw one better adapted for racing said ifr Murphy when interrogated yesterday It Is very similar to the one at Harlem but I must say It is an Improvement on the Chicago track all things considered The track is as near perfect as one can be made and Calif orntans should be Justly proud of such a well fc equipped course Baseball Magnates Rockwell and Barnes are not discouraged by the disruption of the winter league and will continue their perparatlona for next season Comlskey and Engle went East without settling up their portion of sotne small debts owed by the winter league but Barnes will pay these hlm self Barnes will leave for the East In a few days to close up some of his af fairs and will return to this city lna month Bbckwell will remain in this city and manage the games to be played for a few Sunday to come1 There are a great many people who iv are enthusiastic supporters of the i Olympics and the Pacifies who will play atonal team got together by Captain jBtlly Nash of the Bostons The Pa ciflcs supporters are mostly from south of Market the Mission and North Beach while those of the OlynipTcsare from the center of town and the West era Addition The rivalry between these clubs will possibly prove to be similar to that existing some years ago I betweehthe Haverlys and the Pioneers Theanndunceil plan of organization of the CaHfornla Baseball League for 4896 has a smack Oakland v4 otherciUetin the league wUI have just as many games played on their home club grounds as in San Francisco Rockwell will manage the Oakland club TheOakland grounds have not been selected yet but they will be made as central as possible and the grand stand conveniences will be thoroughly satisfactory to the cultured Athenians Manager Barnes has selected the Central Park grounds for next season but they will have to be enlarged to give the necessary satisfaction to the fans who through the very large Haight street grounds have been accustomed to see a player get the full benefit of a long hit The joy of seeing a favorite smash out a long hit Is marred when it goes over the fence or strikes against a house and bounds back Central Park can be and may be enlarged fifty feet on the left field side and if Manager McNeill wants to make his grounds popular he will have to make the extension The San Francisco fans will not see continuous ball playing in this city next season as they have In the past As Oakland and the other cities will have their full quota of games it will be necessary for the San Francisco club to go away and play at the cities represented by the other clubs of the league just as the Chlcagos New Torks and the rest of the National Ieague clubs have to do The Calif ornla League that dplent team work Stanford seems utterly demoralized but the next few days may develop harmony out of chaos The team will not be picked until Wednesday of next week It is most likely that Berkeley will line up as she has played during the entire season with theexcepton of a change on one end andfor right half To day the Olympics will cross swords with the Reliance men and a battle royalls expected by alLr The Olympic team has been weakened during the past week by accidents some of which will seriously handicap the game However an exciting and close contest will be the character of the football struggle to day XEW9 OF1 THE WHEEL Uesler Will Be Given a Reception Tuesday The announcement made exclusively In last Wednesdays Chronicle1 of Otto Zleglers departure for the Coast on the J2d created quite a stir in local wheeling circles and especially In the Olympic the crack of the Northwest Intended breaker upon his arrival next Tuesday Several of the most prominent amongH participating in the California races the local wheelmen will go to Vallejo Junction and quaiL Birds are undeniably plentiful and bags have been uniformly good In view of the continued pleasant weather the duck flight has been surprisingly good Con dltlons have been such howeverthat the big bags have fallen to the good hunters rather than to the good shots At all times a knowledge of the habits of birds and the methods of hunting them is an Important consideration It is especially so with ducks in warm sunny weather when the birds are far more Inclined to loaf in open water than to fly about uneasily as they frequently do in a storm The reports of last Saturday and Sunday show that few Indeed were the duck shooters who returned from the marshes empty handed Ail localities seemed favored with the presence of birds All the club members at Suisun had good bags and outside shooters fared almost as welL A party consisting of HE Rose Walter Burllngame and one other gathered together1 in a morning shoot near Bells ark twenty one birds among which were many mallard The birds were seemingly more plentiful than at the opening of the sea son and had the weather been less pleasant the bags would have been larger As It was the shooters were satisfied and little room along the south Bhore of the bay devoted themselves to rail shooting These maraheaare now the Mecca of all the local rail hunters in consequence of the passage otaaor dlnance which closed the seasoncior rail in San Mateo county on November 15th Previous to mat time a majority of the rail hunters found their best sport on the marsh at Belmont For old seasoned hunters the pursuit of rail possesses little charm for the reason that the bird is an awkward flyer and very easy to hit It is a bird chiefly attractive toithe novice in shooting and to the man who knows by experience the good Golcher and Harlow Whit spent last Saturday afternoon and Sun day forenoon in the hills some distance from Point Reyes The joint bag was in the neighborhood of Ave dozen and that the two shooters
