knows his north better than the rest of them Anyhow since ile haa been In the Arctic trade the Herman has gone farther and met fewer real mishaps than anv other vessel of her class She would readily undertake to make the northeast passage from Point Barrow to JVew York did freight or other Inducements offer a exciting rniisK But this last crulss was one of the most exciting she has known since she took to cruising among the haling grounda and fur atatloas of Llebes A Co In the far North Captain Pedersen as already told In The Chronicle had two murderers and a Northwest Mounted Police corporal as passengers during a portion of his cruise Those Northwest Mounted Police are all sportsmen and wholly Ignorant of what fear means said Pedersen yesterday Inapector Phillips who la In charge of the Mackenzie River district the moat northerly police district In the world and covering a country about the else of California came on board with us for a couple of wejks holiday when we were whaling and he waa as good a whaler as the best of us before he was with us a week All hands were sorry when we put him ashore again A couple of days later while we were still cruising for whale we struck one of the most terrific gales 1 ever knew In the north It was near where Stefanssons boat the Karluk was wrecked In January ltll and It took us all we could do to prevent the Herman going to keep the Karluk company HMVY SSOWSTOHM We were unable to see anything at night because of the Jinavv snow that was flying straight through the atr and seeming never to touch the water Our propeller blades had been so damaged through hitting the Ice all through the summer that our power was badly reducedi and it was a mans Job to prevent the Herman from pounding herself to pieces on the Ice floes It took us six days blasting and bucking to get through ftrt forty five miles east of Point Barrow and on one of those dava my eon Teddy IS roars old fell overboard He waa Jerked off the rail by the shock as we bucked Into the Ice field and had a close call of being crushed between the Ice and the side of the ship before we fished him out Two weeks later he shot his first polar beat while It waa awmmlng Many an old Esquimaux hunter has never killed a polar bear so Teddy is rightly proud of his achievement afOHB BAD LUCK On October 3 wo had another touch of bad luck when Harpooner Joe CJonsalves set the second gun off by accident Just as he had harpooned a whale and nearly blew off two of his lingers The whale escaped In the darkness Another whale we caught that day gave us 1100 pounds of bone arid SS00 gallons of nlgh grade oil The Herman brought down as well as other cargo about 1125 OOOi worth of furs for Llebes dr Co These furs are mostly fox skins blue white silver cross red and all varieties of Arctic foxes also sable and lynx and other rare peltry and Incidentally a number of walrua skins Walrus skins are not the jort of skins ene sees in Post street windows Each pelt weight a trifle Aver a quarter of a ton or more Formerly it was onlv for Its blubber or Its ivory which is very valuaole that men hunted the walrus but now when possible they take off Its immense
