Kid Thompson who has been for a month past indefatigably hunted by Southern Pacific Federal and Territorial officers with a companion Kernel Hopper this afternoon were brought up to the Courthouse and surrendered to the Sheriff by Tonto basin cowboys by whom he had been captured early yesterday morning He is wanted for having been implicated in the Roscoe train robbery near Los Angeles last spring An immense crowd gathered to see the two outlaws tied by stout cords to their ponies and guarded by tbeir cowboy captors who were armed to the teeth with Winchesters and revolvers All had ridden seventy five miles in the preceding twenty four hours and men and beasts were thoroughly jaded Thompson and Hopper were only taken after a fierce struggle in which shots were freely exchanged with William Moore of the Reno ranch who had received word from the deputy United States Marshal here to be on the lookout for Thompson and a companion He immediately suspected two strangers who rode by his place last Tuesdny He summoned Ira Crab tree to assist him and the two men came up with tne fugitives and commanded them to throw up their hands Up went the bands of Ihompson and Hopper holding their drawn revolvers A moment later Hopper sent a bullet in the direction of their pursuers and both turning tbeit ponies rapidiy retreated followed by a couple of shots from Moore Hard pressed the suspects abandoned their horses and took refuge in a rocky canyon where they were besieged until daylight when they again opened fire sending bullets near Moores head Several shots were fired in return and at length leavine arms and ammunition in their retreat they came forth hands up and surrendered Thompson is known to have received a few weeks ago at Tern pe 000 of th Mexican money stolen Domesday Survey hardly more than 1700 churches are mentioned but it is agreed on all hands that this represents very inadequately the whole number tbat must bare been In existence at the time of the Conquest That number must certainly have run into thousands Every one of these churches had its endowments in the shape of tithes and offerings Every one had its glebe On tbe other hand the monasteries had by no means recovered from the devastation wrought by the Danes Many of tbe smalier bouses had been entirely blotted out and it may be doubted whether there were forty monasteries worth mentioning that were at this lime In working order from the Tyne to the Exe It may indeed almost be said that at this lime tbe parish priests had it all their own way and I am afraid that these clergy were none the better for their prosperity rather that their riches bad done them harm in more ways than one Soon the fashion began of founding new monasteries The cry was raised that only by tbe revival of the stricter religious life of tbe cloister could the priests and people be reformed The tide turned against the seculars and the monasteries rapidly became wealthy corporations
