branch of the old drive Jos beyond Strawberry Hill on the lett going toward the ocean there is a wide opening in the bathes Acontinusl stream of men passes from the main road into this opening with laden wheel barrows and another string of men emerges with empty barrows Passing Into the opening and walking along a few yards the visitor suddenly discovers a wide level road lined on each side by sturdy fir trees The road Is not Visible from the old south drive because the trees are to high and because it lies at a lower level so that the pedestrian overlooks it This however is the new sooth drive is from One and a half to two miles In length and Is oi the fall width of the Park drives I twill be soae weeks before this new drive is available for use because at present It is nothing more than a well leveled and tamped eandy road lacking the top covering of macadam or metal as the broken rock is called which when laid on the sand packs his administered the fundi committed to tu care Thi gnouia inspire inose whOvhave already contributed not to with hold their hands but to help these gentle men to carry outtne gooa woriuernio undertaken at solnuchv personal sacriflca of time money and comfort V-Mr Bunkerraajd his connection wltn the movement to aid the unemployed was all but accldenul Four years ago when a great deal of building was going on la thecity the weather was 10 bad that operation were en lirely suspended and a large number ot men were thrown out of employment and much irufferlng resulted Avmeedngwa called at the Chamber oi Commerce which Mr Bunker and many other attended At thU meeting during the discussion of ways and mean Mr Bunker suggested that the business oi raising and distributing funds be left to a small work ing executive committee and that It be held responsible The idea met with favor and the foliowlngday Mr Bunker received a note from Mayor Pond appointing him chair nun of that committee The result of the efforts of theenUemen then appointed was the collection of 31000 of which a balance of 250was subsequently turned over to tn Associated Charities To the men at that time 1 SO a day was paid and they built the citizens road at the Park two miles long and extending from the base of Strawberry Hill to the north drlvelnst beyond the end of the speed track The men commenced work on March 8th and were kept at work for six weeks the greatest number at work at any one time being 1122 men Fear at that time were expressed that a number ot men would endeavor to sponge on the relief committee These fears were not realized the numbers were reduced gradually ana Mil off naturally until all found work elsewhere This year many attempts at charity pure and simple weremade The Associated Charities the Salvation Armv the Young Mens Institute and others did and do help xoarry but the best results were not obtained as the lazy and vicious elbowed the deserving aside and many self respecting men did not care to eat the biead ot charity As soon as the committee got to work and announced that it was ready to give work to a number of men many came forward There were three important matters to be considered The necessity of the men and the amount of work which could be given them secondly the method of relieving the men without robbing them ot their self reliancereliance and a desire to get work elsewhere as soon as possible and lastly the achievement of practical results that tu men might real Hrs Leon JldsrjSlres aCiriiing LuneMnTMrij Friends FOR SALE PURSUANT TO ORDER OF THE County Court of Multnomah connty the south side of the new drive there is a natural lake ot shallow water A force of men is engaged on all sides of this lake Ailing it in partly snd tamping the banks in other portions This lake like the one on the new north drive is formed by the water which in wet weather has run down from the surrounding little hills Th bottom of It has gradually become clayey in its nature and so a good sized permanent pond has been formed From the western end of the road up to this lake the metal has already been laid on the road and the teams which haul the rock are helping to pack it down firmly When this topping has been wetted and rolled the road win be as level ana nne lor driving ana wait ing as any in the Park As fast as the rock is dumped from the carts a force of men spreads and level On this drive alone about 200 men have been steadily at work for weeksrand the grade stakes down tne center ot tne roaa show how close to the desired level the road is In Order to keen the sand on each side of he road from shifting and also to strengthen the growth of the trees several teams and a force of men are at work laying compost aroand the trees and spreading it on all exposed spots It will thus be seen that while the work done is not very expensive every advantage of the opportunity to do the work thoroughly Is being seized The story 01 a certain cynic is wen Known but will bear to jutt action and In addition to considering the need the committee made It a business to Inveitlgate as many cases at rapidly at possible in order to select tbe deserving In this work of Investigation men who were known to be widely acquainted were used and very valuable aid was afforded by the Associated Charities Young Mens Institute and salvation Army Ten day work tickets were distributed and have beengtven oat nntfl Wednesday last when the terra of labor was rednced to six days so as to give more an opportunity of earning and to change the forces more rapidly Tbe Park Commission co operates in a most generous manner noblr seconding the efforts of the relief committee Up to and including yesterday forty eight whole days work had been provided and 07713 75 had been paid out which represents a dlly average of 1400 men The largest number of men employed in any one day was 2641 The committee hopes to find work for nearly 1000 men a dayuntil the end ot March and then to reduce the number to 500 By that time it is expected that other chan nels ot labor will be available The work accomplished is already great and when the programme of the committee is carried but 20000 lineal feet of new roads will have been built and will be in perfect shape Mr Bunker wrote to the Mayors of 125 large cities in order to gain tf possible by their experience in handling
