The call letters "are not being changed, but "FOX" is being added to the station's name and logo to underscore its connection with the Fox network. Station marketing director Terry Joiner says that Fox surveys have turned up strong positive perceptions of the network and KHNL wants to take advantage of that perception. The station also is changing its program listings so that all shows are scheduled on the hour and half hour instead of five minutes after for some prime time programs.

However, Joiner says that this is just following the format other stations use and that in reality, programming on any station never begins at the time listed. Turn that TV down! PARIS Fed up with TV stations that blast viewers with ads up to four times louder than shows, the government on Wednesday ordered broadcasters to tone it down. The Higher Council for Broadcasting ordered that ads "not exceed the average sound volume of the rest of the program." A recent council study said TV ads are louder than programs about 95 percent of the time. The volume difference is often 50 percent, it said. In one case, a channel played an ad four times louder than the preceding film.

It's Turner's turn ATLANTA Ted Turner later this year will host "Turner Family Showcase" for his Cartoon Network. It will feature adaptations of books, including some by Dr. Seuss. From staff and wire reports 12 vr certainly pleased to be there! I'll probably read also from 'No Laughing which I wrote with Speed Vogel, a good friend." "No Laughing Matter" is an account of Heller's battle with Guil-lain-Barre Syndrome, which, because of the book, is now known as Joe Heller's Disease. Not many authors can lay claim to both a catch phrase and a disease.

The creative impulse came early Heller said he always wanted to be a writer, and sold his first story "while waiting around on Corsica to go home during the war. I literally had nothing to do." He didn't make a decent income from his novels until 1970, when he received royalties from the film version of "Catch-22," which in turn stimulated new interest in the book. When "Catch-22" was released in 1961, he held on to his job at McCall's for a year. Good thing, too. The novel "MASH" came out a few months before "Catch-22" did, and even though it wasn't as well received, it stole some of Heller's thunder.

"Interesting, but 'MASH' never did that well as a novel. Later, of course, because of the Vietnam War, the books and the TV show achieved deeper significance. But we had no idea that something like Vietnam was coming. I started writing 'Catch-22' during the Korean War, more than 10 years before Vietnam really took off." The writing process itself turns Heller on, and while he admits that he writes slowly (an average of seven years between novels) he's constantly firing off portions to his editors. "My advice to new writers is not to finish your novel before submitting it It's stimulating, exciting and pleasurable to get constant feedback from editors while writing." "Closing Time" took longer than he thought it would.

"I really thought it would be finished and published two years ago. Like I said, I write slowly. I've got at least two more books in me, but I'm almost 70. Hey, I've got two questions for you. Is it cold there?" No.

"Do I need an overcoat? A jacket and tie?" No. "Good. I was in Hawaii once on the way to Australia, and I sat on the beach for a day, which isn't really a visit, even though I was visiting. Does that count?" Sounds like a Catch-22 situation brewing. Time to bail out of this bomber.

DEAR ABBYi By Abigail Van Bur cn No-show guests disappoint a birthday child EAR ABBY: Our grandly 1 daughter, "Claudia," invit-fi ed eight guests to her ninth birthday party. She and her mom sent homemade invitations and planned the refreshments and a trip to a children's museum. Only one child showed up, Claudia's best friend, "Dotty." The others were apparently busy with other activities. We really, don't know because no one acknowledged the R.S.V.P. pT Of course, Claudia was (disappointed, but she and Dotty' had a wonderful time just the two of them.

Now I am wondering if seven out of eight children are being brought up by parents who are so caught up in themselves that they can't spare a minute to acknowledge an invitation for their children. A phone call or a note from the mother saying her child was unable to attend would have saved a lot of hurt feelings and disappointment. If you put this in your column, it might save other moms and children from the disappointment we had. SYMPATHETIC GRANDMOTHER DEAR GRANDMOTHER; It is not enough to send an invitation requesting a response (R.S.V.P.). Several days before the birthday, one should contact those who have not responded and ask if the guest is planning to attend or not.

You would be amazed at the number of people who do not respond to an R.S.V.P. because they think it means, "Let us know if you cannot attend." Others think R.S.V.P. means, "Let us know if you plan to attend." A response is required either way! Send questions to Dear Abby, P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, Pali. 90069.

Used People Vi A sour Jewish widow (Shirley MacLaine) is sweetened by a courtly Italian suitor (Marcello Mastroianni), and their late-blooming romance inspires an emotional rebirth among her cranky kin (including mom Jessica Tandy and daughter Kathy Bates). A strained and sour attempt at a Queens-Jewish "Moonstruck." (PG-13) Theater: Cinerama. fit Aladdin A ride on a flying carpet, a palace romance in exotic climes, ingratiating new songs from Oscar-winning song-writers, and the manic mind of Robin Williams what more could a filmgoer want in a Disney cartoon? Pearlridge West. Alive "Alive" is based on an incident in the '70s in which members of a South American rugby team were in a plane crash in the Andes and forced to resort to cannibalism to survive. For a movie about embattled yet passionate souls clinging fiercely to their lives, "Alive" is surprisingly lifeless. (R) Theaters: Enchanted Lake, Koko Marina, Kuhio, Pearlridge. Chaplin Deeply disappointing biographical study of Charlie Chaplin, partly redeemed by Robert Downey dazzling impersonation of that transcendental entertainer. (PG-13) Theater Kahala. The Crying Came Va What starts as a thriller about an IRA hostage, turns into an unconventional dra HELLER: His book became a catch phrase Continued from Page A-l pick the stuff the audience would want to hear, and they will. And they're the parts I enjoy too. Luckily, parts of my books are humorous and they read well." Wherever he reads, Heller is always asked the same two questions, so let's lay them to rest right now.

Did he like the movie version, which starred Alan Arkin as anti-hero Yossarian and Jon Voight as wheeler-dealer Milo Minderbin-der? "Yes." Did he have anything to do with the movie version? "No." There, we've saved a few minutes. "I had nothing to do with the movie, but then it was a very long book to try and squeeze into a movie. They did pretty well, considering." The satiric, dark tone of "Catch-22" made it the book to read during the Vietnam War, and authors from Bill Maulden to Phil Caputo hailed it as influential. "It seems to have lasted," said Heller, giving a long-distance phone-shrug. "It was published in '61, and broke into our consciousness then.

It's thought of as a book of the '60s. But I started it in 1953, so it's a '50s book to me. It took awhile to get started, even though it's based on what I observed when flying B-25s out of Corsica during the war. "You need that time for an ironic distance from the events. The great novels of World War I didn't appear until about 10 years later, like Hemingway's 'A Farewell to Arms' or Remarque's 'All Quiet on the Western But to me 'Catch-22' is not a war novel.

It was stimulated by the conditions following World War II. It's really a novel about 1945 to 1953, even though it's set during the war." At the time, Heller was a promotional writer for McCall's magazine. He had gone to college on the GI Bill and became one of the first Fulbright scholars to study at Oxford, the title "Catch-22" came from a desire not to reflect any other title on the market. "I just invented Catch-22," he said. "It's a mysterious, macabre Army regulation that everyone around me identified with." The phrase has since become such an integral part of the language that there's no need to explain it here.

Besides, it would take an entire novel to do it correctly. "My books have a combination of humor and despair, the hilarious and the grisly a BBC documentary said it was because I grew up around Coney Island and people wonder if I purposefully put them together that way. Nothing philosophical about it, though. That's just the way I am." Yossarian, Minderbinder and crew will be back soon in a "companion novel" called not "Catch-44" but "Closing Time." That's the title at the moment," said Heller. "I don't want to get locked into a title concept They're not the main characters, but they're in there, now In their 70s." Besides reading out loud to strangers, Heller will visit the UH school of psychiatry, where, he says, they are "investigating the creative impulse.

Kam Drive-In. The Distinguished Gentleman Va Eddie Murphy is fast and funny with one-liners, but he has to be: There's not much of a movie here otherwise, in this satire about a con man who gets elected Congressman, tries to fill his pockets, then develops a conscience. (R) Theaters: Kahala, Pearlridge West. A Few Good Men Va Director Rob Reiner takes the Broadway drama about a stirring military trial and turns It Into a compelling cinematic courtroom tale, with strong performances and an intriguing discussion about the role of honor in modern society. (R) Theaters: Kahala (except weekend matinees), Pearlridge West. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York Va The story and most of the gags from "Home Alone" are repeated, with only a change of address. Nowhere to Run Jean-Claude Van Damme's transition from action hero to romantic hero begins with another "Shane" variation. What remains of the old Van Damme is the bad accent, requisite bun shot and face stony enough to make Mr. Potatohead look animated. Costars Rosanna Arquette, Kieran Culkin, (R) Theaters: Enchanted Lake, Kam Drive-jg, Kapioianl, Koko Marina, Pearlridge Passenger 57 Wesley Snipes plays an anti-terrorism specialist who, en route to talk to an airline about heading their anti-terrorist unit, encounters a terrorist in handcuffs going to stand trial for two airplane bombings.
