"It's been a long time since we won in our division," coach Mike White said after last night's 23-14 victory over the San Diego Chargers. "We have the toughest division in football. This was a real breakthrough for us, and now we have to keep on going from here." The Raiders certainly have more momentum than San Diego.

Oakland won its third straight game, knocked out San Diego quarterback Stan Humphries early and stifled the Chargers' running game. "It feels really good to see our team coming out of a hole now," cornerback Albert Lewis said. "I think we've matured to the point where I think we have learned to fight our way through adversity like when we got a bad call when (the officials) said San Diego scored that touchdown." Lewis was referring to Tony Martin's second TD catch of the night, a questionable call that pulled the Chargers to a 20-14 deficit Martin didn't appear to reach the end zone, and was pulled away from the goal line by cornerback Larry Brown. However, an official made a delayed call that it was a score. Shutting down the run the Chargers had only 29 yards on 20 carries and the play of tackle Chester Mc-Glockton were huge for Oakland.

"I think our defense was exceptional," White said. "I think Chester Mc-Glockton probably had the best game I've seen him play as a Raider." McGlockton helped turn the game Associated Press Chet Franklin, in his third year as director of pro personnel for the New Orleans Saints, will get the job as interim head coach, a day after Jim Mora's abrupt resignation, broadcasters reported today. The Saints refused to confirm the reports on radio and television. "We were a little premature in calling you out," team spokesman Rusty Kasmiersky told reporters at the Saints' practice facility. "There are still some fine points being negotiated.

We will try to get it done today." Franklin, 61, has been a coach and administrator in the NFL. He was director of player personnel for the San Diego Chargers from 1987-89, after 16 seasons as an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers (1975-77), the Saints (1978-79), and the Raiders (1980-86). GEORGE ON WAIVERS: Atlanta Falcons quarterback Jeff George, suspended the past four games after a sideline tirade against coach June Jones, was expected to be waived by the team today. He is subject to a waiver claim until tomorrow afternooa 'There really aren't any options," said Jones, who suspended George for conduct detrimental to the team following the Sept 22 incident Any team claiming George on waivers would assume the remaining prorated share of his $3.6 million salary which now totals about $1.9 million. Humphries dislocated of his left shoulder on the play. "When you slide, you're supposed to be down," Humphries said. Said McGlockton: "I was in my motion and I couldn't stop." Chargers coach Bobby Ross didn't think it was a late hit As for his quarterback's shoulder, "I don't think it looks good," Ross said. Things got worse for San Diego.

Midway through the third quarter, linebackers Junior Seau and Hawaii's Kurt Gouveia collided helmet-to-helmet, and Seau was on the ground for several minutes. Both later returned, but the Chargers had a rookie and a second-year pro in their places as Derrick Fenner caught a short pass from Hostetler and worked his way through traffic for a 17-yard touchdown and a 17-7 lead with 8:02 left in the quarter. UH FOOTBALL GRANT: Bided his time File botched play under 'bad ideas' sidelines in front of my parentsMt gave me more respect for him. "Last year, when we went to Colorado State with (former UH head) coach (Bob) Wagner and 11 them, I didn't get to play. I wouldn't have said anything, but I sure wanted that chance." In fact Grant only had one carry for four yards last year. So far this season, he has 242 yards on 46 carries, second on the team behind Shaw. He also has three of UH's seven rushing touchdowns.

His 66-yarder against Nevada-1( Las Vegas was the longest of the season for the Rainbows. Grant has become UH's breakaway threat entering Saturday's game at the Air Force Academy. "That's a real motivation for me, too," Grant said. "I know I'm going to get a lot of time to show people in Colorado what I can do." fromC-1 actually kind of an advantage. "He's a difficult target to hit because he has a lot of quickness.

The good news is, he's young." VonAppen is so impressed with him, Grant will be one of the captains for this week's game at the Air Force Academy. It will be the second trip into the Colorado area for the Denver native. He went to Wyoming where family and friends attended the game. Although not high on the depth chart, he still played. He had zero yards on four carries.

"But I still appreciated the opportunity," Grant said. "Even though I was the third man up, Coach told me he was going to get me in the game. "And that made me feel good knowing Coach wasn't going to just have me sitting on the We had a formation reversed on the field and I rapidly lost interest in the concept as my hindquarters smoked. The idea ranks somewhere between the Edsel and the Bay of Pigs. Fred vonAppen On the surprise play, which switched receiver Johnny Macon and quarterback Glenn Freitas, that never worked right.

you can see better up there than you can on the field. "There are advantages to being on the field. There are advantages to being in the box. But you can approach the players and let them know how you feel better on the field than you can in the box." Lindsey took advantage of that by chewing out his players in person after they allowed 21 points in the first quarter, but said he preferred to be upstairs. "As defensive coordinator, you have to be able to pull the switch on what plays you use," Lindsey said.

"You can do that better upstairs than you can on the field." don't have more injuries than we do." Offensive tackle Mark Hernandez said he will make the trip and play as many downs as his bad back will allow him. He was in on only two series over the weekend. Middle linebacker Stephen Gonzales is expected back as well. He sprained his shoulder during the UNLV game. Kicker Carlton Oswalt also injured his hip.

"I'm going to lay low this week and kick with pain this weekend if I have to," Oswalt said. "Field goals and PATs aren't as painful asthekickoffs." Junior Shannon Smith will handle the place-kicking duties should Oswalt falter. COORDINATORS IN BOOTH: UH offensive and defensive coordinators Guy Benjamin and Don Lindsey were on the sidelines for the start of the UNLV game because of communication problems with their headsets. Midway through the second quarter, both went back to the coaching booth where they remained for the rest of the game. "Any time you have a downpour like we had before the game, it's going to affect the wiring," vonAppen said.

"I think Don and Guy prefer to be in the booth because way. John had played various positions for us, so we thought we would find a matchup we would like from this formation. "We had a formation reversed on the field and I rapidly lost interest in the concept as my hindquarters smoked. The idea ranks somewhere between the Edsel and the Bay of Pigs." INJURY UPDATE: Don't put center Shane Oliveira on the shelf just yet VonAppen said after yesterday's practice that the planned surgery for the junior's sore left heel has been put on hold for a couple of weeks. It's very likely that Oliveira will not only make the trip this weekend to the Air Force Academy, but will play as well.

"With the ankle injury to Sione Tafuna, that leaves us with only C.B. Wentling," vonAppen said. "We can't expect C.B. to play the entire game, so Shane is probably coming with us and will see some playing time if he can manage it" Oliveira said over the weekend that season-ending surgery was a likelihood. He has been bothered by bone spurs in his ankle since last spring, something only surgery can repair.

UH trainers don't expect Tafuna, who sprained his ankle in the second quarter of the UNLV game, to be ready. He had his ankle in a boot, and was still on crutches during practice. "We expect everyone else to be ready," vonAppen said. "It's a tribute to our players that we '7: ByPaulArnett Star-Bulletin Johnny Macon couldn't hide the dejection at the end of yesterday's jight workout at Cooke Field. Last week in practice, the all-everything offensive player worked at quarterback to see if the University of Hawaii could catch Nevada-Las Vegas off-guard.

But two false-start penalties the first time the Rainbows tried to run it, and a pair of timeouts the second time around, forced UH head coach Fred vonAppen to abandon the series. "The element of surprise was taken away when Josh (Hawkins) had that false start," Macon said. "Then (Kaulana) Noa moved again on the next snap, so it put us in a tough spot at first and 20. "When we tried it again later, some communication problems caused us to get in the wrong formation. I wish we would try it again later in the season, but I doubt it I get the feeling that too much went wrong for the coaches to try it again." VonAppen talked about it Sunday and again at yesterday's Quarterback Club press luncheon.

Macon is right on the money. "I know people want to know about the substitution of putting John at quarterback and moving Glenn to wide receiver," vonAppen said. "Late one night last week we thought that was a hell of an idea. "We'd not been drinking, by the EVERGREEN RELAXATION Open 24 Hours Free Parking Grand Operms Specials!
