Now Have an Inning The Trout Season Is Nearly Closed A Splendid Outlook for Both Quail and Ducks otes and Comment The interest of sportsmen has now been largely turned from the rod to the gun Monday will see the opening of the sea son for dncks and quail earnest Quail are reported plentiful and the ducks are cominc ii rapidly A general fusillade of guns will be beird in the hills of all the bay counties Monday October will be the last month of the trout fishing season Even now however extended trip to the Olympian mountains Washington Tho first day of their stay in the mountains the party lulled no less than seven magniScentelk Incessant rains afforded the only unpleasant feature of the trip The members ot the party report never bavins enjoyed finer fishing They do not believe the sport with Jod and fly in this region can be surpassed in America The reproduction in last Saturdays Cheoxicxk of approved positions for holdinea shotgun the held has occasioned much favorable comment One of tbemost prominent of local sportsmen in a letter expresses approval of the positions which he pronounces to be unusually good He says Usually such productions are simply abortions and do not convey to the average sportsman an in telligent Idea of how the gun should be carried when afield but the cuts in your pages are simply excellent Position a 1 1 take to be one of the easest and most convenient of all and finds the sportsman readv for a sudden springing up of came either snipeor quail besides being the safest ot anv position in which a gun can be carried It has been a favorite of mine for years although I bad never seen it adopted by any of my sportsman friends It is now a generally accepted position among thorough sportsmen abroad and at borne On the Alert is admirable and natural and quite in contrast with the position assumed by members of our modern trap shooters who with gun at the shoulder as is seen at every pigeon match of the Tl TENNIS COOim California Club to Elect Wicers A Tournament for This Afternoon The ntrrlst Is Evidence That There Will Bo Good Sport The annual election of officers the California Lawn Tennis Clnb will take place at the club grounds this afternoon commencing at 2 oclock As there is an opposition ticket in the field a very exciting time is anticipated The annual elections of officers in this organization which has now been in existence for over ten years have always proved very pleaant affairs and have been the means A CEE 1 THL MENDOCINO MOUNTAIN the sport is poor an Irancisco angles will rud the further opportunities for sport confined to the fall and spring runs of steelheads GUN AD CAME Sportsmen Will laughter Quail on and After Next Jlonday The qua 1 season of the portsmen if not the seaon of the aw coraes in this year on Mondav next which is made by law a legal holidn a consequence many gun enthusiasts will seize this opportunity for an initial shoot among the little hoodlums of the valle General reports from all the bav count es are to the effect that quail were nier more plentiful Especially 13 this said to be trne of Sonoma and Mann counties bills of these count are assured of mn visitors on Mondaj Sportsmen will now find shooitne the hills pleasure whereas during the hot peli of the past two weeks savored far too much of hard work It is a urce of gratification to all jortsmen that tne I unwritten law of sjor amtnship which decrees tSat quail should not be sho be fore October 1st has been so genera ly observed It is a 1 opelul gn ndicatmg the growth of a health pjblic eitiment hile reasonably good port may bo expected at this time it is certain as ual that the best shooting will not be bau before a rain ith the ground nd foliage as dry as it is now the rds ire not at all prone to 1 before dogs as they do after a rain and the first frosts More over the birds do not scatter rn the open where they can be readilj hunted but in stead make at oifee for tne gh covert where they enjoy complete impunity from tne threatened slangier ot eager sports men I Such was the experience of Fd Bnegs and others who were at an Pedro in Sa Mateo count last fcunday Thevfouil entv of birds but few indeed were those brought to bag At the first so ind of alarm the birds sought refuse in mi penetrable underbrush In the more I open Jjills of tan Mateo county some very excellent bags have been made nee the epemrgof the season on beptembcr loth Even hero the sport will ooubtless show a very roirked improvement af er a ra Even under favorable nrcuTistances the man who makes good baj on California quad deerves bis success There are few places in tins portion of tne tatewnere we can find really ideal qtan shootine In the bay counties nnd fact through out the greater portion of Northern Ca 1 forma the birds lie bard rough ground and as before suggested the sportsman has to work for his game In a well hi ed bft of these beaatif al birds howfrer be should and does find ample reward The ideal quaii ground of California ac cording to the initiated is to be fou id in Southern Cal forma where the birds fre quent open fields encumbered only by low bruh According to Iayne the quail shooting of this portion of the State is quail shooting par excellence Such I conditions it must be admitted contribute i not only to the con fort of the sportsman I but enable him to derive double pkasure from the working of bis dogs The sports men of botithrrn Caiiforn a owe it to themselves to protect their splendid opportunities for sport The need for protection mav oe inferred from the immene number of birds killed everv year for the markets The killing of quail for the market is an industry that should be discouraged if not entirely prohibited by legislative en actment It is the story of the market hunters that thev derive from their call ing scarcely more than a bare living Again the coma ssion merchants who handle the game state that there is no profit In the business They tray from the market hunter simply because the game is killed and consumers will bov it Apparently to do away with an industry so unprofitable would work no srions in jury to any one concerned The facts afford opportunity for serious reflection The Tamslpais Club of Marin county has decided not to allow quail shooting on its preserves until October 15th It is th apparent wisa of the members that the birds shall hare ample opportunity to become fall grown A party consisting of George Roop Dr A Barter of Kan Jose and IL Falls St Louis have just returned from an diy present anth ng but a sportsman like jos tion 1 could ncerely hope to ee a reform in the method of gun to the ihoulder as permitted by tne pigeon hoot rules ot the da but I ear me it II continue io be the form of manv as lonrs thev can make big scores and win money in pools and sweeps Tl othe pos tions in jonr list are all evre lent an 1 natural consequently safe but do not call for any special comment rii all 1 oever Can be studied and adoptei wi advantage by oar rising voung sportsmen ana it might not be am for many old timers to take to them kindlv FISH AfD FISH1VG Only One More Month Left for Trout 1 isheruien The men who love to angle for trout hae eft but a lev weeks during which the can enjoy their faorite amusement Tne close reason on trout comes in on November 1st and remairs in force until inl of next year Opportunities for good port with rod and line are now lim ited Announced last week local an glers liae been meeting with very indif fe em success at tbe Spring they lakes fhe one stream afordinjt any marked promise of good sport the Truckee river and the latest reports from there are not encouratmg 1 here rs one verv peculiar thing about fisht ie in the Truckee hen reports are rece ed Truckee and Boca to the el feit that fishing is good locai anglers stay at home It is a contrary report that mav be rel ed upon to tempt the ocal fly fishermen The reason for this probably 1 es in tbe fact thtt when Truckee and Bca fishermen make good catches it is cen ally with baitwbich the experienced ang er accepts as evidence that the Truckee troi are not then taking a fly In the same manner tbey reason that when the fash are rot taking bait they must be hantering for the fly This statement lias been borne out bv the personal expe ince of many fishermen and sat eral gentlemen are therelore planning tr ps to the Truciee during the coming neeit discouraging reports to the con ar notwithstanding 1 he next opportunity for angltn sport will te offered by the fall and spring run of teelhcads in the cear by streams which directly or mdircctlv empty into the ocean It is while these hh are run muz II at the local angler take his big hsh The trick is to catch a stream ju it the right time and in the right place Wttlt all condit ons right there Can be cauht tn Papermill creek Sonoma creek Russian rier and other streams also conveit ent ol aece as bne iot of hah as the most anient angler codld desire Point Reyes a single rod has been known to kill in a few hours 10O pounds of fish The writer has seen taken from Sonoma creet near the Embarradero in a sing dav twenty two fish whose aggregate weight was tn excess of 200 pounds these are feats which in be duplicated in any season provided the angler in fortunate enough to strike water weather and everybing just right The steelheads of the fall and pnng are tbe big fish for which anglers louK in va during the trout season As a rule after April 1st they have to be content with tbe small fash ranging in length from six to ten inches For thrs circumstance so disappointing and inexplicable to man anglers nature alone is responsible It is the habit of the bah io run from salt to fresh water at certain timeSr and that is during tbe months when they are allowed to be caught only Id tide water The close season for salmon will expire to mor ow The effectiveness of the Fish Com mission patrol on the Sacramento nrcr evidenced by tbe splendid take of spawn at the United States hatchery on the McCloud Latest reports front Balrd announced thai spawn had then been taken to an amount ot over three quarters nf a million in excess of the taee at tbe same time last eason At this rate the total take Will be far in excess of 8000 000 which the phenomenal total for last season and the best record which bad been made at the Balrd staton in twelre years Reports have been received to tbe effect mat late trout nsning is very gooa on Battle creek of attracting a great majority of the club memoers to the coutts not only for tne sake of voting but to witness the many exciting tennis contests which are a fea ture ot tbe club election day For this occasion the directors of the club bare offered eij handsome prizes to be contested form a singles class tournament open to all comers There will be two three classes and a prize will be given the winner of each class Among the cracc players who are expected to take part are Samuel Hardy Coast single champion and bis brother Sumner Hardy George de Long who with A Dnscoll recently defeated the Hardy brothers for the Coast double championship Harry Stetson A ftilberforce Whitney Mitch 1 Allison Jr George btoker Hooper McGaviru Pavis Bradshaw II Mee Charles yd am Hovey Deil Linderman Greene A Keeler I Lundborz and Howard Adarrn It is quite likely vhat many worthy aspirants mav enter from the Oakland and Alameda clubs as the entries will be tept open until shortly before tbe time of calling play There will be no match between tbe winners of tbe different classes as with such a large entry list it would take until dark for a finish A feature of the day will be a luncheon furnished by tbe club to the players including a punch which will act as a bracer between ts Another very important event in contemplation by the California Club is a mixed doubles tournament Judging from the favorable replies received from the many different lady players by a promoter of the affair the event can be considered as certain for some time next month Those who bare already declared tbeir intention of taking part are Mis Ethel Bates and Charles Dates Jr Miss Martha Alexander and Alexander Wilberforce Miss Clark and George de Long Miss Gibbs and Davis There are many other clever lady players both on this side and the other side of tbe bay who it is thougbt will play Mies Be Hooper and Harry Ji Stetson who have already won many prizes similar tournaments are looked upon as likely winners but with the many other excellent teams mentioned they would no by any means have a walkover They would have to play harder to win thao they have in former eTent as the volley ing a verv essential requsite in the doub game of both Miss Bates and Miss Alexander is stronger and mora accurate and effective than tbat of Miss Hooper or anv of the other ladv players who took part in the recent champion ship contests at San ItafaeL The courts of the different bar clubs are now being patronized to greater extent than for some months past owing no doubt to toe fact that ail tne players are back from heir vacations Should the interest continue to increase it i certain to have a beneficial effect both to dubs and toe game itself and will also encourage the directors of clubs to hold freanent tour naments throughout the winter months The omcers oi the Tulare Tennis Club are formulating a plan of organizing a central league of tennis clubs to be knowa as the California Central Tennis Association which will embranco all tbe clubs in tbe interior of the State This asocf atlon will become a member of the Pacific Mates Lawn Tennis Association and all its tournaments will be governed by tbe rules of tbat body In tbe many interior clubs there should certainly be promising players who would in a year from now 1 able to stir tin soma of ihe local experts in the championships The managers of the Hotel Mateo intend holding another invitation tournament at 8an Mateo tn the near future The best players on tbe Coast wlltbe Invited andlt Is hoped that the event will prove as successful as a similar event held at tho same place last year which was won by Stetson and De Long of the California Tennis Club A rumor to the effect that Vr Qood bodr the clever Irish player and ehal Ienger forth United States championship at Newport last montn was to visit oan Francisco shortly had OTerv stirring effect on the local tennis enth us huts all of whom re anxious to see the Coast champion Professor Joa Daily tackle some ot th more celebrated tennfs players as none oi tbe players in the Pacific States or wwt of tha kftrtie are able to friva the DTOiessor a beating Dady is also Tery anxious to try conclusions with ftny ot tbe noted players who mar visit tha Pacific Cpast CvW Hiliyard one ofUnglanda best lawn tennis players is at present pUyjng cricket with Lord Hawkea team at Philadelphia It is said that tue next Pacific Slates championships will take place either at Monterey or at the courts of the California Lawn Tennis Clntv the latterbf which being so easily accessible A ThA ihm rif rhartnncr small tu mission fee to alt future tournaments of the association seems to meet witb tne approval of the officers of tbe association and as it is practiced at alt the large tournaments elsewhere it cahnot therefore interfere With the amatenr standing of any of the amatenr players It would also save the association a snug little sdm annually The Drlscoll Sam Neel match at Chicago last weekrwa a Tery close contest result ing in
