artist is a three quarter length portrait of a lady by Mrs Curtis Richard son The tone of tbe whole work is a little cold but Uje drawing is excellent and the arm banging quietly at the side is beautifully m6lded Miss Alice Chittenden is another lady artist whose work will attract attention Her soft end irsg rant looking lilac Is well remembered from last year and this time be has a fine large canvas of chrysanthemums of rich red bronzy hue Still on tbesime side of the room is Robinsons sombre marine a fine ex nmple of brush work and full of feeling The effects of sky and fog and water the dimly outlined craft and uncertain liehts hnve been cleverly managed and New York critics did not fail to express tneir admiration of it last year when it was ex hibtted there Morion Bush has of late been making quite a decided move in tbe direction ol marines In those which he has now on exhibition he shows that he is quite as much a master as tils more familiar tropical scenes Drifting in Midocenn is a hoe large canvas the subject of which ths name at once suggests in sky and sea there is the light and motion the buovancv and transluceney which are so necessary to save it from monotony and give it interest A tropical scene by the same artist needs only to be mentioned to be appreciated William Keith the master of land scape is represented by two fine pictures rather similar irv subject bu very different in tone One and that which will probably catch the eye of the artist more readily is a rural scene with soft grass umbngeous trees a lowering sky with tints of deep blue and sullen lead The timeisevenrac and a stormv dav is mak ing way tor a stormier night There is a moisture in the atmosphere and a soft nes which are the charm of the canvas Mr Keith studied the work for some time and has devoted a great deal of care to faithfully expressing the nrt he felt in this portrayal of nature The other canvas Mr Keith is a brighter day scene cleverly handled and thoroughly true It represents a stretcn of Selda a dusty cart rut furrowed road and a clump of fine trees all in a bright morning light Portraiture and figure work are not very largely represented Julius Ludo vici has a pastel of his daughter which has been seen before but which has again beep placed on exhibition at the express request of his brother artists Hu new work is a bright little bust portrait of a lady in masquerade costume in the act of removing her mask It is called After Midnight and tne reason of tha title is told on the pastel The face is bright and laughing the powdered hair and tbe face with its little black patches and the background of tapestry are all in keeping and the work is a gem in its line In the matter of Size Arthur Matthews came off ths palm but there is more than only area of canvas to his pitiure of women plucking ducks There are two seated figures a young and an old woman resting in their work of plucking the dead birds on their laps Like the guns at Balaclava there are ducks to the right 6t them ducks to the left of them and duces all around tnem Tn drawing Is as perfect es that of Mr Matthews always is and the entire subject is treated with firm band Oscar Kunathls represented by a pretty head of young girl who a big sun hat and a wealth of hair Lea Lash has several samples of his skill on exhibition and the smallest is the most piessing It
