Ascension of Mount St Elias Departure of the Kussell Party to Alasfca The Perils to Be Encountered in Alaskas Storm Latitudes When tho rereuns cutter Bear lafled from Fort Towntend for Alaska sho carried as passengers tbe party sent out br the United States Geological Survey and the 2ational Geographical Society for the purpose of attempting again to ascend Mount St Elias a feat which thus far has baffled the energy of half a dozen scien lists The expedition is headed by Professor Israel RnsselL One object is to ascertain tbe exact height of Mount Et Elias which thus tQ has merely been approximated Last year Professor Russell and party made a determined attempt to reach the summit Before leaving this city jo join the Bear at Port Townsend he VaTe complete outline of his plans for the present expedition with a reference to what he had already accomplished He stated that during his visit to Alaska last year he had explored the region east of Mount gt Elias His object at that time was to make a study of glaciers which in Alaska are much larger than any to be found along tbe slopes of the Alps in Europe To this original object he has added several others suggested by the National Geographical Association The snow mountain this time is to be explored for the animal and vegetable life which is thought to exist on its higher ranges and a basis is to be secured for future com parisoos of atmospheric ana climatic variations with those of other sections of Alaska The personnel of the party is as follows Professor Israel Russell Thomas Story Crumbach James Moore Albert War ner Thomas White and Neil McCarthy While in this city the services of a pho tograpber were secured He has taken with him a full set of cameras and will mske photographs of interesting subjects along the line of ascent Professor Bus sell believes these photographs will be one of the most valuable results of the expedition Each of the party will be supplied with a stout alpine stock braced with a steel prong Among other accoutrements are mos quito nets carpentering tools fishhooks tents axes wines and flreanns Where Mr Russell will go dry wood is an unknown quantity so that all the cooking for the party will be done over coal oil stoves a liberal supply of oil be mg taken along for that purpose Each man will be given fifty pounds of provis ions as follows A side of bacon a small sack of rolled oats one fake of choco ate a sack of cofiee ten pounds ofj cornmeal one can of baking powder a small box of prunes two cans of condensed milk four cans of sardines a pot of essence of beef wax matches and a package of tobacco The provisions are calculated to last ten days so that to reach the summit the ex plorers will be compelled to regulate their speed according to the holding out of supplies In the selection of tbe various pro visions great care was taken thaj the food shond be so varied as to prevent disease and weakness In outlining his plan of ascent to friends in this city Professor Russell said that he would make a short sop at Sitka Tbe party will leave the Bear at Icy Bay which is not more than thirty miles from Mount St Elias The snow line is 2500 lee above tbe sea level The party will spend the summer on the glaciers Several months may be passed above tbe snow line before the final ascent to the summit is com roenced Tbe explorers will oide their time until the fierce storms which sweep down from the lofty peak seem to lessen in intensity and to render the climb a trifle less hazardous Professor Russell stated that he expected to sleep most of the time over ice and snow a dry ledge of rock being considered a luxury The perils of the expedition are great and its results which will be made known in October may add some sensational chapters to the eventful history of Arctic exploration AMATEUR OPERA IN AID OF THE FUNDS OF THE CHILDRENS HOSPITAL Young Mitchell received a dispatch yesterday horn Tom 0 Rourke Luzons manager stating that the Boston pugilist will arrive in San Francisco at 11 oclock on Saturday morning Mitchell and some friends will go up the road to meet him The new Occidental Club has leased the exhibition hall formerly occupied by the California Club at 614 Howard street If the place can be put in shape for the Slavin Smith match that contest will take place there Tbe Occidental Club will abandon Mow rys Hall as sot being sufficiently central Tbe acquisition of the Howard street hall places the new club on a very much im proved footing and the supposition in porting circles is that it may get the liixon Willis match as Dixons manager and Mitchell are warm friends Mitchell states however that ha has no desire to Interfere with ORourkes arrangements with tbe California Club and if 0 Rourke is satisfied with the club offer and terms be will advise him to keep faith with them If however ORouxte objects to the terms usually imposed by the California Club on contracting pugilists Mitchell will try to get a purse tor the Bostonian in the new Occidental Club Paddy Ryan gave a banquet to John Sullivan last night The invitations were limited to a small number of congenial spirits among them some of the most prominent sporting men of the city bal livan in responding to a toast pronounced Ryan one of the games men he ever fought and about the only one that stood up and took a licking The menu card was a At least one portion of the secret in structions given to the Bear and Rush is no longer doubtful In addition to the surveillance which both cutters will main tain over the sailing sealers in th Behnng sea they have been ordered to overhaul no less than thirty whalers in the Arctic and elsewhere that are known to have whisky on hoard to be used for trading purposes among the Alaskan and Siberian natives The truth of this statement was vouched for by Collector Phelps yesterday in an interview with a Chsosicxs reporter Several months airo he said Deputy Collector Tuttle went to Honolulu and while there secured some startling facts about the operations of the fleet of whalers that rendezvous at that port It was found that thirty whalers had taken unusually large cargoes of whisky on board Upon Mr Tattles return I secured a statement giving the names of the vessels and the amount barrels of whisky on each It was plain to me that much more had been taken than would be re quired for medicinal and ordinary drink iug purposes une woaier naa over Sw gallons another 700 gallons In several other instances the figures were equally large Copies of the statement received by the Collector were sent on to the authorities The cutter Bear was at Port Townsend when instructions reached Captain Healy ordering him to proceed to Alaska and overhaul every whaler appearing in the furnished list All whisky excepting a small quantity assigned to medicinal pur poses was to be seized wherever found Similar instructions were received by the Rush before sailing to the Pnbylofl islands Selling whisky to the Alaskan natives is strictly forbidden bv the United States laws The whalers find it a profitable enterprise The whisky is landed on the Siberian shore The natives there take it in exchange for furs and money It is only twenty miles across Behnng straits to Alaska and the natives assisted bv the whalers easily smuggle it over in small boats Severs other Smuggling points are located along various parts ot the Alaskan coast seldom visited by the revenue cutters GOOD MISSIONARY WORK What the Central City Mission Is and Has Been Doing The Central City Mission bas appeared before the Street Committee of the Supervisors yesterday to protest against the proposed assessment of the district west of Mount Olympus for the improvements to be made in Cole street An intersecting sewer system is to be laid and Mr Sutro argued that the district in which he is interested will not he benefited by the proposed improve ment The committee decided to levy only a nominal assessment upon the western property involved so as not to obstruct the progress of the work The committee also decided to report in favor of granting a franchise csked for by the Powell street Railroad Company to make certain supplemental connections with its road A number of very angry residents and property owners of Ellen street appeared before the committee to make further pro test against the proposed change of name of the street to Hoffman avenue The board has already passed snch a resolution to print but many property owners emphatically object They argued that such a change would in ore values and create great confusion The new name ia that of a lady who is one of the most earnest in asking the change and those who objected saw no reason why she should be so honored The committee decided to sustain the protest Several property owners protested against obstructions on Twenty ninth avenue from Railroad avenue tn the bay A number of gardeners have usurped the street and built fences Tbe Superintendent of Streets was directed to remove all illegal obstructions A number or suggestions made by tbe 8treet Superintendent In his report occasioned some very emphatio action by tee committee regarding the Central Railroad Company and the Omnibus Cable Rail way Company Sansome street between California and Sacramento is being re payed with bituminous rock At present it is in a vyy poor condition being almost impassable The railroads have their tracks upon the street and refuse to lay any other pavement but cobbles The committee decided to give the railroad companies notice to immediately repair that part of the street under their control with material similar to that used by property owners They will dlso bo asked to raise their tracks to the proper grade and put the road in fit condition to be in keeping with the improvements Should thev refuse to do this the Superintendent of Streets is authorized to close thes treet until the work is done Opposition on the part of the railroads will result in a test case to see whether or not the failure of the companies to do as they are told constitutes just ground for a forfeiture of their franchises The committee took the preliminary step in the opening and grading of Potrero avenue from Ninth street to the county line by appointing Supervisors Taber and Burling a committee to fix a proper assessment district for tbe work The district will probably be a very large one MEiN W1TE RECORDS NOTED SAN FRANCISC9 CROOKS AT ST LODIS Jack Morgan and Watt Jones Under Arrest in the Eastern City Captain Lees men are looking up the history of John Morgan a San Francisco man who was arrested in St Louis last week in conjunction with Watt Jones alias Stetson John Murphy and George Walsh alias Watson three of the JcmaaUat Stetson necessary to hold him could never be obtained Watt Jones whose portrait accompanies this article is one of the cleverest bank sneak thieves in the country He came to this city after having served a lone term of imprisonment in the penitentiary at Kingston Ont in August 1838 during the Grand Army Encampment He was accompanied bv the notorious Jimmy Carroll Joe Dubuque and Sheeny Levy and the trio had a plan outlined which nit had been executed would have ennched them by several thousand dollars The police however nipped the scheme In the bud and the three crooks were arrested and ockeci up until after the encampment was over Jones left the city immediately and has never attempted to operate here since Jones was a great pal of Jimmy Carroll and also of Eddie Guenn tbe noted ago last evening six microscopical enthnsiasts met and organized a society which has since grown famous as the Microscopical Society of San Francisco That important event was celebrated in a pleasant manner at the rooms of the society at 432 Montgomery street last night The new rooms of the organization were thrown open to the invited guests at 8 oclock and its treasures exposed All of the societys most powerful microscopes were arranged on circular tames eacn focused upon some interesting object The secrets of nature hidden from the unassisted eye were revealed to and discussed bv lawyers physicians artists and gentlemen in other walks of hie who were present An hour was spent most enjoyably in social intercourse and the discussion of a menu which was provided bv tbe society Chamnaene flowed freelv and rood fellow ship abounded President Wickson welcomed those assembled a brief but pointed address He reviewed the history of the society during the twenty one years of its existence and hoped that its successes of the past would be excelled by prouder achievements in the future The sentiment of Our Societv was responded to by Dr Mouser in a happy vein He had watched the societys growth from the time it cast off its swad dime clothes until it assumed the earb of vigorous maturity The members had done excellent work in the past and made marvelous strides in the development of microscopical science Our Comlneof Aste was a sentiment ot which CoL Mason runne made the most He was one of the immortal six who organized the society twenty one years ago and his only regret was that he alone of that number was present The members were poor but ambitious and determined to succeed and he was proud to say tneir nopes were realized lie hoped sincerely to be present on the occa sion of tbe societys forty second birthday His remarks were loudly applauded The Microscope in Medicine was responded to by Dr Wythe a veteran in microscopical science who first beran the study fifty five years ago Dr CToolo created some merriment witn a quaint dissertation on Brass and Glass and ex Judge Rearden delivered a learned treatise on Points in Dispute in which he said that microscopical science would no doubt ultimately demonstrate that love was the result of some form of bacteria in tbe human system Dr Sternbeig poke entertainingly in behalf of Our Honorary Members and 0ur Kindred Societies were spoken of by Ehrhorn president of tbe Entomological Society Mr Breckenfeld spoke of Our Absent Friends and Professor Searby closed with a handsome tribute to the society and
