But in this movie the hero hardly matters. The movie's real guiding spir it is Hopper, a boyish prankster who might as well be blowing up model trains.

Like the makers of "Speed," Hopper exudes the scary exultation of a 12-year-old nihilist. i A triumph of entertainment engineering, "Speed smashes through the excitement barrier with a record-breaking bang. It's just too bad that there are so few human beings on board. This hyperkinetic thriller puts pedal to the metal and blows the competition off the road. A surefire popular smash, Jan-De Bont's movie hurtles along after a Los Angeles bus spiked with explosives primed to detonate if the speedometer slips below 50 miles per hour. With gas spewing from a punctured tank and a panicky passenger (Sandra Bullock) at the wheel, the 30 bus plows through freeway traffic jams and crowded city streets like a misguided missile. Its run Is monitored by a frantic cop (Keanu Reeves) and whipped along by by a cheery, cackling maniac (Dennis Hopper in full Satanic mode).

The Reeves-Hopper duel adds a quasi-human dimension to the escalating pyrotechnics. The bus episode is a supercharged, adrenaline-fueled sprint, but it's only the centerpiece of "Speeds Writer Graham Yost has buttressed the main event with two equally intense and nerve-racking sideshows, one involving a sabotaged passenger elevator and the other a runaway subway train. I Systematically transforming ev- ery known means of group conveyance into a death trap, De Bont's movie somehow manages to keep topping itself. If "Speed" went on for another half hour, it would burn up like a rocket re-entering the atmosphere. memos ol Penzance NA IEO PILIMEHANA ANDREW excitement grows wearing.

A marathon of slam-bang mini-climaxes, "Speed" leaves the audience almost too exhausted to cheer at the finale. Yost's plot and characterizations are stripped down to pure function. The people are intentionally generic; you know them at a glance. Reeves is Jack Traven, a hardbitten swashbuckler loyal only to his easygoing sidekick (an underused Jeff Daniels); (: Hopper memorably plays a giggly, preening psychopath possessed of unexplained technical genius. 'y, gawky Bullock makes a nicely life-sized heroine.

Everyone else in the movie is bomb fodder and literally bus ballast. va In outline, "Speed" is "Die Hard retooled for Mack Sennett One virtuoso stunt sequence follows another. And, unlike the common run of thrillers, its plot twists are more witty than sadistic. With a little fine tuning, "Speed might have been as emotionally compelling as it is viscerally exciting. But Yost and De Bont apparently made a decision not to let human psychology gum up the machinery.
