NOTICES FUNERAL NOTICES FUNERAL NOTICES Winifred Wai Yew Chung Wong Age 75, of Honolulu, passed away May 30, 2004, Sunday at Straub Clinic and Hospital, after a long illness which had kept her mostly confined to her home for the last seven years. She was born September 25, 1928, the second youngest of six children. She first met her future husband, Herbert Y.K. Wong (the son of Koon Chuck Wong and Au Mew Ngan Wong), when she was thirteen and he was fifteen years old (he regularly delivered bread to her mother's Kaimuki store from his father's bakery, The New England Bakery). She eventually married him in 1952 while he was still studying to be a doctor, and after he returned to Honolulu from California in 1964, she assisted him in his private medical practice.

Winifred Wong and her husband lived with his parents. Throughout the years she assisted her father-in-law and mother-in-law in the operation and administration of their family business, as well as running of their household, up until their deaths in 1983. Thereafter she continued to work with her husband and the family business until illness forced her to be confined to home. Winifred Wong loved the written word, and wrote stories about her family in her private journal and in letters to her daughter, which were written throughout her illness and up to the last months of her life. Throughout her writings, she demonstrated a great sense of humor and showed that she was an astute, and compassionate judge of human character.

She also loved music and the arts, and was very close to all her children and grandchildren. Winifred Wong also had strong religious beliefs that sustained her throughout her long and difficult illness. She prayed and meditated every day with her rosary, seeking divine protection and blessings for her large family. Winifred Wong is survived by her husband, Herbert Y.K. Wong, MD; her sons, Roger Wong, DDS and Kendric Wong; her daughters, Carolyn Wong and Sandra Wong Spurgeon; her six grandchildren, Lisa Wong, Grantley Wong, Bradley Wong, Erica Wong, Alexander Wong and Ryder Wong Spurgeon; her brothers, Bow Man Chung and Wai Mun Chung; her sisters, Ellen Chung Lee and Leatrice Chung Towne.
