disposal of the guests there was no need to worry for transportation Those enjoving this pleasant evening In a recent article on long shots Foster In the New York Sun has given some excellent advice as to their uwa and buses The long shot Is made ucce fully only In hands that have nothing In them unless a long shot makes Then if It falls nothing Is lost and everything Is to gain It 1 a great fad at present to attempt short suit play without understanding the scientific short suit sjstem and with a vain fancy that some odd irregular play may strike something in partners hand that will make an undeserved trick That is not what Is meant by a long shot and it nearly always means a well deserved loss of at least one trick and gtaerally of many The long shots are made by leading out trumps and then finding that the combined hands of the leader and his partner are able to maka tricks that would never have succeeded without held play When the trumps are led out reclely without considering the end plftr the tricks are lost and good cards fall to win through the oversealous idea of making a great gain by some surpassing play No part of whist is prettier than the legitimate unease Before a risky finesse to be made third hand must instantly ask himself if this loses am I going to ram by being led up to Every time that this Is trie situation that the hand that finesses Is going to win In either case whether the tlnesse succeeds or falls and third band wishes to be led up to then It is a good play and only then If a cros rua la imminent and your partner starts a trump lead it is folly to finesse You know that at least two rounds of trumps are wanted If third hand finesses and loses then the finesse has made the lead of trumps a weakening play for the leader and It has helped the adversaries Lately three tricks were lost In one deal by such a finesse Trumps were led from four ace and three email Third hand held king and Jack only and played the Jack Fourth hand held queen which took the trick He Immediately led a suit that his partner took and partner returned a card that he could take with a small trump The small trump would not otherwise have made The original trump leader held the ace of trumps It was his partners duty to take with the king and return the jack leaving the propriety of the finesse to him The general rule Is to finesse deeply on the opponents suit but not on partners The struggle to make a long shot never succeeds by breaking the rule When weak in trumps or with no trumps at all finesse deeply in the cult In which you believe your partner to be weak la order as long as possible to protect him from a force On the other hand It Is bad play to finesse deeply in a suit in which you known your partner to be strong It is by lack of bearing in mind these two principles that our partners good plays are so often ruined Charles 8tuart Street has lately revised bis earlier whist publication and has now placed before the whist world hla Modi fled Game He Is enrolled among the advocates of the so called short suit ram but his system could be more ubersily called an intelligent common sense game of the highest order He Is a member of the Pyramid Club of Boston which he says is built on the modified game Last spring his team of four won the New England trophy colloquially termed the Mug in an open tournament in Boston by a higher score than was ever made before In such tourna ment They won thirteen out of fifteen matches with a handsome trick total The first time they defended It successfully against the team of Howell another well known short suit authority Then they lost It to the Newtons a New Fngland team a defeat which Street acknowledges to be the result of combined retched play They secured the trophy later and then defended It successfully nine straight times against all of the prominent New England clubs They thereby have won the memorial shield offered by the donor Another team of four from the same club also playing the modified game picked up anotherXew England trophy known as the Morse trophy and won It nine successive times against challenging teams but lost It eventually to the Americans When the Tyramlds combine fours the resulting am of eight is invincible Street opens ro short suit with a card under the nine He opens a five card suit regardless of its containing a tenace It Is only In the hands that contain no five card suits that he is wary of the long suit opening In the challenge game for the Bates trophy the usual twenty four trays were played last Saturday forenoon and resulted In a tie Last Saturday evening in the San Francisco Whist Club Mr Wood and Mrs Keeler made the remarkable score of sixteen above average They ptared East and West North and South Mrs Blan kenshlp and Mr Sturgeon were seven above Monday evening Mr and Mrs Jones were nine above ThM Is the evening play when a few long shots will sometimes drop you way down below the average Tuesday afternoon North and South Mrs Moore and Mrs Keith were els above East and West Mrs Sesons and Mrs Blackman six above Wednesday evening Haley and partner were seven above Hotallng and Mrs Darling six above The Trist Duplicate Whist Club of this city has extended an invitation to the San Francisco Club to enter a friendly tour 1 nament for team Dlar and has set the evening of the Ed Washingtons blrthdav The following easy deal caused consid erable comment recently There was al swing ot nne tricks in the score The ace oi diamonds was turned by North The card marked wins the trick and the card Immediately underneath Is next led 1 As 2 Sd 4 3h 8s Sh Sh 8 5s 9 Kh 10 lOd 11 fid ttJd 12 Ad North and South 6 East and West Trick The difference In score was principally due to opening trumps Instead of spades originally With fire trumps and a weak five card plain suit the better opening Is the plain suit Trick 3 The conventional second hand play with ace queen ten and others Is aneem when weak In trnrnnt Trick 4 West seen to deprive South of possible re entry in hearts Trick East holding second and third best must lead one of them for fear that a small rani nur make and that the ad Tersartes will still retain the
