July 1. 1992 station KHHR adds more TV news SiorBuHetin staff KHNR 650 AM, which ills most of its air time by broadcasting the audio portion of CNN Headline News, is getting further into a mixing of the media. The radio station said.it will begin simulcasting KHON-TV's 6 o'clock newscast on a daily basis tstarting July 13. Later this sum-i mer, it also plans to carry news updates filed by KHON reporters, as well as part of the TV station's 1-morning news show, scheduled to begin Aug. 31.

KHNR General Manager Bernie lArmstrong said a one-year agree-rment with KHON will provide a strong local-news segment for his station, while expanding KHON's reach. It's basically an agreement based on our common interests," he said. "There's not a lot of cash changing hands and that sort of thing." Kent Baker, KHON's news director, said his station had been in-, volved in similar agreements before, although not to this extent. He said such TV-radio cooperation js a growing trend and estimated it xists in some 70 cities nationally. I "I think it's happened for several reasons," he said.

"It costs such a huge amount to maintain these TV) news operations, and we're always looking for ways to expand yhe number of listeners, expand Uhe service, without having any additional costs. This was one -way we saw of being able to do Ihat." Ironically, one of KHNR's shareholders is Richard Schallcr, general manager for KITV. When KHNR was being put together earlier this year, one of the ideas bandied about was using KITV reporters for local news updates. Armstrong, who himself was KHON's sales manager before going to KHNR, said the radio station simply opted to broadcast the TV newscast with the higher rating. Armstrong said KHNR still hopes to have its own reporting staff someday.

In the meantime, the latest development will not lead to any layoffs among the station's personnel, he said. "Our people are grateful to have a break," he said. "It'll give them time to work on their own stuff." A 4 4 I 0 1992 MAHALO RECEPTION AWAItDEES International Savings Loan Ltd.
