notorious Cliff Regan Last night the robbers running short of prori alona after abandoning their rig made Mid Ml two sheep camps and robbed them of all the provisions they could find Among the passengers who arrived hereon the Los Angeles train from San Francisco to night was Postoffice Inspector Thrall who Is returning to iota In the hunt for the train robbers Thrall has been pursuing the robbers for week but temporarily abandoned the chase on Monday He will leave fat Tornltos early to morrow morning and Join the Sheriffs posee The officers ar strongly inclined to the belief that the men now so closely pressed weragnlltjr of the Cross Creek train robbery One of the pursuing party said to night that he had reached this conclusion altera week of careful Investigation It Is sure he said that not more thab two men were seen at any one time on the night of the hold up Jim Meade the ex Sheriff of Fresno tountr and special agent for the San Joaquin division of the Southern Pa clflc Company says If he Is not mis taen in what he saw on the night of the robbery there were not less than three robbers mixed up in the business Meade Jumped off the train before the i t0 robbers who were respectively i styled Chief and Jack had left the en 1 etae The moment he set foot bn the 1 ground some man from a position behind the fence that leaves the county read not a great distance oft ordered him to get back into the train andac companled the demand by sending a bullet In his direction Several shots were exchanged by Meade and the rob ber before Meade entered his car Indian gulch and the neighborhood where the robbers are now supposed to pie located is a very rough country Hornltos lies in the foothills There is much heavy brush all through the hills which would make It possible for the robbers to sleep by dayand travel by night with comparative safety This would seem to indicate that the capture of the robbers la by no means the easy task that some of the officers think it Is The Postmaster of Homltos telephoned the Information here to day that the robbers were xractlcally sur rounded and that their capture was but i matter of a few hours They robbed sheep ranch a few mllei out of town last night and the officers are said to be notion the trail Notwithstanding the report that the bandits are surrounded the hlUs Chief Special Agent Crowley and bis poxe have given up the chase They arrived from Hornltos early in the afternoon and took the first train for Fresno With Crowley were Meade and Deputy Sheriffs Tim rnons and Pec Before leavias here Crowley Regan the man who Is suspected of having been concerned In the Cross creek train robbery has served two terms in the State Prison at San Quentin He was sent up from Fresno county on December 8 1S86 for one year for grand larceny and was discharged on October 8 1887 On July 12 1892 he was again sent to 8an Quentin from Fresno county for eighteen months for robbery and was discharged October 12 Pacific Mr and Mrs John Brookenslde their fourteen months oid child and a miner who with Brookenslde have been prospecting a claim for George Montgomery the Oakland philanthropist were the only much time la Braxll with his father While there he learned the languages spoken in the Bouth American countries After his fathers death at Rio Janeiro he returned to Vermont with his mother He graduated at Middlebury College and soon after studied for the ministry Fifty six years ago he was ordained at Louisville Ky by Bishop Smith of the Episcopal church Previous to that time he bad been president of St Andrews College In Mississippi which position he accepted at the request of Bishop Green of Mississippi It was while presiding over that institution that he married Hiss Evelyn Turner of Baltimore a lady noted for her grace of manner and other accomplishments Dr 8hepherd taught school in Kentucky a while and from there went to North Carolina where he lived nine years He came to California in 1854 and for several years conducted very successfully a school for young ladles in San Francisco He was a very Intimate friend of the late Bishop Kip and the two were much together Dr Shepherd was in Alabama when the Civil War broke out and was in Montgomery when the Confederate Congress met for the first time He it waa who Invoked the divine blessing upon the opening session of that body He continued the conduct of his Alabama school and with signal success considering the turbulence of the time With a keen eye for business Dr Shepherd turned all of his Confederate money earned as tuition fees into cotton corn wheat flor and other staple commodities and at the close cf the war found himself with a competence In 1STC Dr Shepherd returned to California settling at St Helena From there he came here and for many years was rector of the Church of the incarnation retiring about four years ago with the rank and competence rector emeritus No man in Sonoma county had more friends than Dr Sehpherd Of a broad liberal cast of mind and of the kindliest nature he was a wel come guest in eveTy home He numbered among the warmest of his friends 7 priests pastors and people of all denominations His courtly Southern manner made him one of the most agreeable and entertaining of men and he was worthy In every respect to bear without reproach the grand old name of gentleman He was a leading Mason and belonged to the Blue Lodge Chapter and Commandcry For several months Dr Shepherd had been ailing Yesterday he was attacked by paralysis The last holy rite was fellow laborer without provocation The murderer was convicted and sentenced to be handed January 31 1S9S but execution of the sentence whs stayed by an appeal to the Supreme Court The verdict of the lower court waa confirmed and McCarthy was taken from San Quentin to Santa Rosa and resentenced April 18 1897 being fixed as the day of the execution Friends of the condemned man appealed to the Governor claiming that McCarthy was an epileptic and not a proper subject for the gallows The Governor granted a reprieve until October 15th following and appointed three physicians to examine into the condition or the condemned It was found that he had a soft spot on the top or the neaa pressure upon which threw him into epileptic fits Three trips were made to the prison but the doctors could not agree On October 12th the Governor granted another ra 1 prieve until April 2d of this year two weexs ago on Hatcn Gardner and Osborne went to the prison and again made a thorough examination of McCarthy They round him In the same 1 condition as when they first examined him From what they saw they came to the conclusion that he was not of sound mind and so reported to the Governor Acting upon
