By deleting therefrom the following items Grant backs study in Hawaii By Jerry Tune Star-Bulletin A $400,000 federal grant is keeping hopes of lnterisland ferry service afloat Pacific Marine of Honolulu recently received the high technology grant from the Department of Defense to study the demand for an lnterisland ferry and write a business plan. The company is co-developing the SLICE vessel with Lockheed Corp.

of California. (SLICE is a name, not an acronym. Its technology is based on SWATH, which stands for Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull. There are two SWATH vessels in Hawaii, Navatek I and II.) Pacific Marine will begin building the 110-foot-long SLICE this fall at its Honolulu Shipyard Inc. Sea trials in Hawaiian waters are expected in summer 1996.

Pacific Marine is providing $500,000 toward the ferry study. Many companies have tried and failed to start an lnterisland ferry system since the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co. shut down regular ferry service in 1949. Seaf lyte jet hydrofoil ferry operated between 1975-78 but no ship design tried to date was able to deliver the speed and comfort necessary to attract enough riders. SLICE is designed to cruise at 35 knots through rough Hawaiian waters without passengers getting seasick.

For a trip from Hawaii Kai to downtown, the travel time would be 30 minutes, plus any time required for stops. From Honolulu to Lahai- na, Maui, travel time would be about 2Vt hours, according to Pacific Marine. If the SLICE testing is successful, Pacific Marine wants to design and build SLICE ships in Hawaii. Steven Loui, president of Pacific Marine, sees a potential for three passenger ships, at about $12 million each, and three larger passengervehicle ships, at about $32 million each, for the Hawaii market The City and County of Honolulu recently decided to study the possibility of daily commuter ferry service between downtown Honolulu and communities in Hawaii Kai and Leeward Oahu. Charles Swanson, director of transportation services, says his internal department study should be finished by fall.
