a SAIT WBA15CISCO GHBONIGLE WED5TESDA3T JTILX 9 1S90 JAPIMMSE The Poet Withdraws From Active Life His WeirdHome on Oaldand Heights JL Birdseye View of the City and the Ocean His Only Inspiration There was a ripplo of sarpnse manifest wbqn Joaquin ililler the poet of the fcHerfas infused to furnish the animal Fourth of Jaly poem for the local committee reople who know the erratic Joaquin Tioweer did not marvel over his refusal as they have known for a long time that the poet is no longerthe public character the man of the world and the platform Bpeakerof days gone by bat has of recent years developed into a veritable recluse ifr Jftller is not at all charmed tv ith our modem civilization There are many material things which grate harshly upon his poetic nature and he has learned to Ignore rather than to love the bustling busy life of dtyand town Not many years ago he declared that never again would he cross the continent and that the country to the east of Mount Shasta whose rugged peaks he loves so well would see iim no more High up on the foothills three miles back of East Oaklacd Miller purchased a fifty acre tract of land two years ago and here he has built his home From the doorway of his cottage he views the Golden Gate and the cities of San Francisco and Oakland They are near enough to him he says from that distance and he has so far followed his life as a hermit that he scarcely ever comes to the city During the past year his visits have been growing more infrequent and he even refuses to see the city people who climb the mountain side to pay their respects to him A long winding narrow path just wide enough for a sharp shod horse to climb leads to the home of the poet recluse Once upon the summit Joaquin Millers place is pointed out to tne visitor by a ranchers child There is scarcely a foot of level land on the poets tract of fifty acres Shade and fruit trees young but sturdy plants flowers and a strangling stone wall cling to the mountain side as if fastened there and held in place by invisible strings The home consists of three cottages fifty feet apart strange odd and fanciful buildings designed after some weird genius of an architect Miller lives in one his mother in another and the other members of the household in the thirdl I When a Cheoxicle reporter climbed the dizzy height yepterday he found the door of the poets cottage open In the center of the room was a cot luxurious in rugs and furs and on the cot reclined the poet busy with pen and paper pausing in ins work only long enough to glance through the open doorway at the city below and the blue expanse of ocean far beyond This as the poet claims is his only inspi rationthe view of what man has made and the work of God as the background for the picture Joaquin remains in bed until high noon Awaking at an early hour he takes a light repast and smokes a cigar and then he writes and works incessantly until noon When his days task is done he gets up like other men roams about his acres trains his vines or nurses the young trees growing upon the hillside His trees are a passion with him Even while composing verses and while enjoying hismorning labor a nightcap and dressing gown he thinks of his trees He has gathered them from the uttermost parts of the earth has imported sprig spray ana sprout irom every known part of tae civilized world Mrs Miller and her daughter recently arrived from New York citv and are now the guests of Joaquin at The Heights Obeying the poet dictate they live apart as does the mother of this erratiG man Each has her own dwelling plaee which is sacred to the occupant I believe in personal seclusion says he poet A man should not be familiar een with members of his own family There are times in the life of every one when solitude is an absolute necessity Men enjoy their own society the best and doubtless women are the same Everyday men and women intrude too much upon each other When I walk over to mothers cottage I stand without her door hat In hand and knock for permission to enter The same is true when she calls at ray door We meet in common only at table My house is my castle and even my Inspector Kennedys re port were the subject of much speculation among teachers yesterday The report as to have been considered bv the Classi fication Committee on Monday evening but owing to the opposition of Superin tendent Anderson the matter was postponed for three weeks Inliis report Inspector Kennedy states that he made a thorough inspection of the Turk street school in May and that he was so engaged in the work for a penod of five days He received instructions to that effect from Director Stone chairman of the classification committee Five classes were examined Of thee three grades were found to bo only fair and two the second and fourth were below mediocre The papers of the examination numbering 500 were left with Mrs Washburn says the report for correction with the understanding that she should take them to the office of the Board of Education in order that they might be filed with the Classification Committee Mrs Washburn went according to the aereement but instead of leaving the papers presented a list snowing tne standing oi eacn dass examined by Mr Kennedy The latter demanded the papers and was told by Mrs Washburn that she had destroyed them in the belief that thejr were not wanted by anyone This necessitated another examination which was made by Mr Kennedy and Inspectress English Of the 600 pupils in the school it was found that less than 40 per cent successfully passed the examinations The moral condition of the school continues the report was found to be bad considerable cheating copying etc having been discovered The report recommends that Mrs Washburn should be removed for Incompetency inefficiency and lack of discipline Inspector Kennedy in speaking of his report yesterday said to a Chroxicxr reporter that his statement of the condition of the school was based upon the facts as they exist He had been charged with having exceeded his duty in making an examination without the knowledge of Superintendent Anderson but this he denied He had been ordered to make the examination by the Classification Committee and having obeyed orders he had nothing more to do witn the matter Hi3 opinion was that the school was being nacuy managed ana ne ma not hesitate to say that a change was imperatively necessary Superintendent Anderson on the other hand says that the charges against Mrs Washburn have been trumped Up in order to have a valid excuse for dismissing her He had never heard any complaints against Mrs Washburn and he did not intend to accept Mr Kennedys report as final until he had personally investigated the matter Mrs Washburn was elected a memljerof the bchool Department on fcoptember 13 1861 and has until recently been considered one of the mot suceessfuVteachersm the department She has several strong Crane was here he was far from displaying his full powers and was overshadowed by Fraw ley and Mrs Barrymore He no doubt was touched just the least bit with envy wheq he saw the applause that was Bail Edward Fladung the young contractor recently held for trial in the Superior Court on a charge of murdering his wife in May last was admitted to bail by Judge Wallace yesterday the amount being fixed at 20 000 The only evidence offered was that taken before the committing magistrate from which Judge Wallace concluded that there was such a doubt of Fjadungs guilt as should entitle him to his release on ball pending trial for the offense charged Especially did the Court consider this so in view of the fact that Fladung flatlv denied his guilt and with equal pqsltivcness asserted that his wife had first attempted to miurder him and had then taken her own life a statement which has appeared very reasonable in view of all the circumstances which have been developed in the case POCST little religious organizations religious services and obscure religious bodies which are quite apart from the regular churches whose existence and proceedings are well known and which almost monopolize the apparent local religious field They often present strange phases appear in strange places and under novel conditions and somctirnes novel doctrines and teachings attend them The Catholic Apostolic Church is one of the religious organizations in this city which has remained obscure and its regular service which was held last evening in an upper chamber at 74t Xatoroa street was one of those In contrast with the worship supposed to ascend from rich chancel and frescoed naves Five men of righteous mem twelve silent ladies of all ages and three or four children who supposed that everything was all right were gathered In a neatly furnished little parlor of an un stairs flat on the side street and the boards of an extension table combined with chairs were used as benches Four tallow candles on the famdy organ just beyond the folding xloors gave an attractive suggestion of religious symbolism and when the young lady touched the keys and a few fervent Voices rose a familiar hymn filled the room with its melody and praise II Wood the evangelist who is the resident leader of the little organization roe behind a little stand in one corner and talked for three
