Star-Bulletin Monday. April 3, 1995 B-3 ON THE AIR News found plenty of talent local stations Oahu radio log By Tim Ryan Sur-Bulkon AM FM PROGRAMMING 1 102.7 The Blaze, classic rock 650 CNN Headline News 7 600 KDEO KHNR KGU KHVH KJPN was pleased with his contract, his employers, and Moore is the highest paid news talent in the state. Armstrong first nabbed anchor-weatherman Dan Cook from KITV and soon after that, its sports director, Robert Kekaula. By the time the raids were mostly much over this month.KHON, KITV and KGMB cumulatively had lost 16 reporters, photographers, producers, directors and editors to KHNL. Also from KITV came photographers Dell Ison and Darrin Jimenez, assignment editor Erin Ostrem and director Geoff Vestal.

KHON lost three on-air reporters: Marvin Buenconsejo, Lee Cataluna and weekend anchor-reporter Barbara Wallace along with photographer Duncan Armstrong, executive producer Alex McGehee.and news producer James Scullary. KGMB lost four news staffers, on-air sports reporter, Neil Everett, director Lori Chong and photographer Hugh Gentry. Most recently former KGMB reporter Lyle Galdeira, who was working for the state Department of Public Safety, was hired along with radio reporter Karen Waygood. Julie Ogata, a reporter from KTVK in Phoenix, and KHNL news director Paul Brandt, from KREM in Spokane, are the only members of the news staff who came from out of state. Doug Armstrong, KHNL president and general manager, late last year quietly declared a recruiting war when he set out to create Hawaii's fourth television news program that he vowed would be staffed by "the best of Hawaii's best" To do this meant a no-holds-barred raiding of the three existing television news room staffs of KHON, KITV, and KGMB.

The only untouchable was KHON's Joe Moore, not because Armstrong didn't respect Hawaii's number one anchor, but because he knew that Moore 760 News, talk -AdwiR fctWo rCiuiwuiv'i0rw ...4.2 830 News, talk, traffic and weather 670" '05 SChrKart tec chlrg (A 1 940 Japanese language programming Dan Cooke: Hell be KHNL's new anchor and weatherman. from Japan Christian radio KLHT 1040 1000 KZOO 1210 KHM 1270 Japanese-language, with music, news, drama, storytelling, live broadcasts from Japan Poious and ethnic prtrfeg; fifr.6X-f&vJ KHNL: Starts its news operation with state-of-the-art, digital equipment Torifian, Portujucstf and 1 420 1 00.3 Hawaiian music (AM); island music: contemporary Hawaiian to reggae (FM), and UH sports 1 540 Tagalog, llocano, Vlsayan and English programming 83.1 Hawaii PuWte fladia: classical music, news 1 380 24 hour newsinfo 90.3 Jazz, classical, rock Hawaiian KCCN KISA KHPR KJFO "KIPO KTUH fKSSJC' KIKI KTiTfl KPOI Ikklv KINE Current adult contonipcaary "1-94," current hits, dance 93.9 ing a different look for every newscast, Torelli said. So how can KHNL afford such a multimillion-dollar switch to digital while major networks are making the change slowly? "We're creating a newsroom from scratch and the technology is available now," he said. "Established stations who buy this equipment, which is five times more expensive than tape, must replace their current system, in which they (already) have made a major investment; and you don't just throw those things away." Anchor Dan Cooke sits dead center in the open newsroom. Sports editor Robert Kekaula and KFVE sports commentator Jim Leahey share a corner office.

Cooke said he's been "intimately involved" with the station's new technology so he can be in FROM PAGE B-l be stored easily and indefinitely on a computer disk. This digital revolution is similar to what newspapers went through when typewriters were switched to computers, explained Joe Torelli, a senior product specialist for Avid Technology, which manufactures the equipment being used by KHNL Now editors, reporters and photographers can cut, copy and paste video just as is done with text in a word-processing document The technology is merging to the point where eventually a reporter will be able to write and edit text, video, and audio all on their desktop computer," Armstrong said. Stories can be quickly assembled and multiple versions of the story can be created faster, allow volved in the editing process as needed. "Understanding how this works allows me more time to put energy into the creative aspects of my job," said Cooke, who also will do the weather. Moving Leahey from KHNL's nearby facility into an office with Kekaula allows KHNL and KFVE to integrate sports coverage that the pair will inevitably share, Armstrong said.

"We have the University of Hawaii sports product on Channel we have the news product being developed by Robert for Hawaii News 8," he said. "Now we have opportunities to do new things in the sportscast by using the sports product and sports news together." The news desk is an off-white color with gold trim and sits on a raised carpeted platform. The current plan has just Cooke and Kekaula on the set for the 9 o'clock news. Three robotic television cameras will be controlled by a single operator sitting at a master control using a joy stick or by touching a computer screea Don't expect any promotions for KHNL Hawaii News 8's early broadcasts. "First impressions last a lifetime," Marrs said.

"KHNL Hawaii News 8 is a technologically live program and mistakes are going to happen at first If we call everyone to the screen to watch they might ask themselves why they're watching." But once the kinks are worked out, "Hawaii is really going to love KHNL Hawaii News 8," Armstrong promised. :oe.3 UgMroJi "97.5 The Edge," modern rock Rock 'n! roll okJias 97.5 08.5, 105.1 CD 101.3" Contemporary Hawaiian Smooth jazz music with Mark and Sharon (KZOO-AM) Following are some programs ol interest scheduled for the coming week, with information provided by the stations and subject to change: l-vsKeaj in 7 p.m., "Love Mondays through Saturdays with Kimo Villarimo (KRTR-FM) 7 p.m., "Call the Mondays with Les Murakami (KCCN-AM) 7:30 p.m., "Your Talk show with Loyda Sousa and Jules Suzuki.
