lantxtav 3s Ha it not been for the well known JTO of Pete Loprnan and the equally familiar sound of Brick Devereaiix voles at Recreation Park yesterday afternoon the casual visitor might have had some hesitancy about recognising the Oakland bunch In addition to McCreedie being sickbed and Strieb havjng a bad finger the accident to Diinleavys head forced him out of the game This put a pitcher In one field and a catcher in another while fat Jimmy Sullivan sag brought out of oblivion and did the big act at first Coupled with this was Hart wella initial appearance aa a regular pitcher for the Suburbanites who will be entitled to their last years cognomenthe Cripples if the present streak of accident continues long For all the change in the team Oakland put UP a gallant fight and was not beaten until Cristall flew out to Parrott In the ninth A mishap to Jimmy Whalen In ttie last period tempered the jubilance at a second straight win from the leaders for it i leaves Harris with but two twlrlera on his staff Jimmy made an effort to head off a terrific thump from Devereaux and the ball cut a big gash between the thumb and first flnger of bis pitching hand Three weeks seems a conservative estimate of the time required to repair the injury The latest recruit to the Ponies Arthur Williams put In an appearance and was Immediately given Delmas Job for the day He is a let handed thrower and batter who acted Very smartly in practice but had no chance in the game At bat he failed to hit out of the diamond but chopped at the ball and kept it on the ground Williams walked once and stole second cleverly The other new comer Billy Phyle squared himself with the fans his first time at bat by driving the ball out of the pasture It was a beautiful smash which clear ed the center field obstruction on a line Next time up he sent a liner past Francks for a single and the third time showed his versatility by beating out a neat bunt Of the five hits gathered by San Francisco Phyle got three A neat running catch of a foul also tended to put him in the very warmest graces of the local enthusl asta The Ponies started after Hartwell as though about to make a Waterloo of It Shay gave Gorton a hard chance and Phyle lifted his homer into an adjacent lot Nordyke and Leahy walked and Parrott helped a second run over with a single But right in that hole they stuck and no more tallies could they make in the remaining nine innings for Want of bingles to follow on the heels of HartweUs generosity and bungles by his support Lohman had a good legitimate kick coming for his portion of the entertainment With a man on first and two out in the sixth Peter swung at a ball which hit his bat and carromed off his leg toward third McDonald did not see the quick course of the ball and called Lohman out at first when Phyle fielded the ball over to Jfordyke Peter limped and said personal things to the umpire for the balance of the game The Suburbanites became factors the going In the eighth when Walters hit and went to second on Mohlers out Lohman then sent one directly over second which Shay deflected into the field while Walters scored Again in the ninth Oakland seemetf about to cross the plate Devereaux led off with the smash that put Whalen out of commission Francks went out on a hot bounder to Dyke and Gorton sent the runner to third on a hard fielding chance to Glendon which was beautifully handled It was up to Cristall and a blgh fly to Parrott ended Inning and game The score SAN FRANCISCO Shay Phyle 5b Nordyke Jb Leahy Williams Parrott
