other newspaper fakers throughout the country has been discovered in a lit tle suburb of Chicago called Willow Springs The rival reterred to is a ten vear old cirl named Maude Beebe Maude is a bright little girl and full of fun and she dislikes to go to SchooL After spending several sleepless nights in thinking up some scheme whereby she might get a respite from the toils of the schoolroom she finslly hit upon a novel plar she had heard her father and mother ilk about the strange disappearance of Captain Egan a well known Chicago man and with all tbe instincts ot a natural born romancer she conjnred up a yan which she felt sure would cause enough of a sensation to close tbe doors ot tbe much bated schoolhouse for several days The plot was a deep one for the girl carefully roped as a confederate her little brother who is about 6 years old Maude wis not slow in putting her scheme into effect for the very next evening she and her little brother came running into the house white as ghosts a id completely out of breath It was some time belore the girl could speak and when she did finally the tale was enough to horrify her gray haired mother Maude and her broihr Tommy had almost reached home related the girl when Tommy discovered that be bad lost his mit ens Maule being the elder aocom panie him bark oyer the road to look lor them 0 i tneir way they had to pass a onely hoilov a the edge of the timber As they near 1 this pluce they saw a man bareheaded and in his shirt sleeves run muz from the timber towird a wimpy sloogti Iu hot pursuit were four men ahr were barefooted One of the four liurlM a large stone at the fleeing man a 1 1 struck in tne back ot the neck 1 hen another who had black bushy wi skers ae zd him by tbe arras from ind and forceJ him to the ground He cr ed ljr help at first but the man with inkers pressed pr soner face into he ud nottier ng Ins cries In the I enntime one of ic other three fetched a acket of water from the slouch while a other he ie inr feet Then he I the bind whiskers pressed his knees nird upon ihe ostrate mans back and I then dr wing a hugs carving knife 1 cut of head faking the head In his hands he held it up for the others to look at whi the fe low who carr ed the I bucket cashed water on the headless trunk to wash the Hood away At this point 1 the man with pjntical whiskers caught sht of Tommy an1 Maud who were ml terested spectators of the blcody horror and were ta id ng just oyer the fence next the road They tied in dismav when the bewhiskered individual dashed tbe lead to the ground and made at them I witn savage yell but stopped when they a tv the man did not come farther than tbe fence Tbev looked back and saw the men bearing the bodv into the woods I Maude had tol 1 this story to her brother several times on their wav borne that 1 mxht and succeeded in making tbe little I lellow bel eve that it was really so and as I tbe liule rl spun out her tale of horror with an ah indance of corroborative detail Tommy caretulh assented to every word Tne pire us called a neiehoor John Banks he village storekeeper and to rim the chil Iren reported their thrilling experience Of course Banks told the ev it tne ore that night and by day light every one in town knew it and the local Methodist preacher accompanied bv ha a dozen villagers went with the I cmliren tu investigate their story They found what they supposed were the tracks i ie by the bare feei of the alleged mur derers but as it hat rained all night all traces of tlood were washed away Near uv in the timber was a slaughter house ere dec epit old horses were butchered or the Chicigo market last fall Here was found a tin pall which was identified i by the children as the one used the night I before by tbe murderers It was also i i scovered that a wagon had been driven I into and out of the timber during the nieht The story reached Chicago the next Hy and as the descriptio 1 of the mur ered man Uied very closey with that tne missing Ciptan Egan several detectives were put on the case Each of ihe sleuths one paper save there were at least twenty of them questioned the children over and over again Every time however the children told the same story remmoer ng even the smallest de ills Ihey were questioned sinely and together but always witn the same re suit After a weeks work without any success the detectives gave up the chase It was then and not till then thai Maude told her mother and father that she had been fooling all the time and that she bad done it in the hopes of getting to stay away from school Maude and Tommv had ben allowed to remain home from school for sveral davs while the search was going on but when the game was up and Maude confessed her guilt she received a regulation interview with her papa and a long switch in the woodshed and will hereafter go to school murder or no marder Archibald Clave ring Gunter stopped over in Chicago for a couple of days early this wee on Harrison and Sec etarv Blaine also marked his stay here Before leaving he fully and freely approved the ashington style of beauty as exemplified in the geu tier sex Since it became known that it wss two to one that tbe Government wonld establish a cane sugar experiment station on what are known as tbe reclaimed lands ot tbe Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys in California a small but moneyed coterie of bouinern men hdve been watching lor legislation on the eobjct with a keen terest and wi 1 keep fully informed on the progress of tbe experiments as they are made They believe that larger profits lrom tbe industry can be secured in Ca lorma than anywhere once it is fully demonstrated that the cane will thrive there and they want to be first in the held if it is auspiciously opened They know that sugar cane will grow wherever semi ropical fruits mature and they hsve taken into consideration the fact that California fruits contain a much larger percentage of saccharine matter than tbe iruits ol other States believinr that the sime rule will apply to cane These men are sugar planters in theSouth to day and are in the business only for the money there is in it If it can be proved
