taat the details ora gigantic railroad deal were gradnally cpriiingto light The deal tvas said to consist in the estahlish aient of lose relations among the Southern Pacific Missouri Pacific andthe Atchison amounting to ah offensive and defensive alliance and it wag further a serted that the thfee great systems were Tirtually under one management Richard Gray general traffic manager of the Southern Pacific Company said yesterday of this report There is nothing in it at all There is no alliance among the corporations named except the one included in the agreement ia which the Southwestern Traffic and Steamship Association is based and in which several other roads are concerned as Well There are several lines to the Southwest so closely In competition that something is needed to give stability to the traffic situation in that section The report probably arose from the fact that Messrs Huntngton GouJd and Manvel signed the agreement for their respective compani as did the presidents or receivers of the other roads concerned The agreement howeyer was not formulated by them but by the committee appointed for that purpose at Uie recent Chicago meeting It was presented to them for their signatures as that plan was deemed necessary to secure stability under the circumstances It is not usual for the presidents of roaas to sign tne agreements Dy wmen traffic associations are formed but it has been done before notably amonjthe trunk lines ue peculiarity ui wie ouuiiiwesv era Association consists in its being governed by an executive committee of five of which Vice President Stubbs of the Southern Pacific Company is a member Rates will be agreed upon by general freight agents but they must be approved by this executive committee This arrangement makes it more difficult for any road to jump over the traces The plan and agreement adopted were presented by Mr Gray who was chairman of the committee appointed at the meeting of representatives of the Southwestern roads to formulate an agreement The Southwestern Association is now thought to have greater elements of strength than any traffic association heretofore formed and is expected toendure all the strains which the traffic conditions in the Southwest will cause Pacific Railroad Relations It has been reported that a bitter feeling exists between the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific companies This report appears to have no foundation whatever Comparatively recent expressions of Charles Francis Adams president of the Union Pacific and of officials of the Southern Pacific Company as well as the harmony that has always existed show on the contrary cordial relations Small differences have naturally arisen and some have existed tor a good while brrt the re fctions now are understood to be wholly satisfactory One of these differences was in the division of rates on through business and especially on business to Denver and Montana on which the Union Pacific demanded and secured a proportion of the whole rate practically amounting to their own local rate It was learned yesterday that not long ago the Union Pacific made concessions in these cases and a new division Was agreed upon by which the Union Pacific receives a shire but little more than a pro rata based on mileage The Colorado Midland The report that the Atchison has purchased the Colorado Midland is no surprise in railroad circles The financial backers of the Atchison have also been large stockholders in the Midland and the relations of the two systems have been close for several years One effect of the purchase is ex pected to be to farther stiffen Atchison securities and aid in giving 3 definite value to the companys property The influence of the chanse on the conditions and operation of the new broad gauge route about to be opened between Ogdeu and Denver of which the Midland the Anstraltan ballot svsteni1 as proraul gated by the Federated Trades jvas indorsed Three applications fori EXPERIENCE OF THE TENTTJRX She lired through a Hurricane trhich Batted Her Masts in the Water There are several hundred numismatists or coin collectors in this city who were greatly interested in a teleKrfn in yester days Chsosicle which stated that the 1804 dollar and other rare coins were being manufactured and sold in the East They were prompted to look over their collections in search of spurious coins but 01 course did hot expect to find the 180 dollar because an original 1304 dollar has never been known to have ever been in circulation 6n the Pacific coast Neville a coin dealer said to a Chboxicti reporter yesterday If is al most impossible for a counterfeiter to place one of the 1804 dollars on the market Every coin of such rarity must be accompanied by its pedigree or history showing who had it last what collection it came irom ana its history lor at least ten years A man will not pay 500 for a rare coin without its authentic history any more than another man would pay 550000 tor a trotting horse without knowing tne animals pedigree Very few counterfeit coins of the rarer sort are ever offered for sale on this coast although there are plenty of spurious dollars half dollars and quarter dollars of common dates always in circulation Gambs a local dealer in old coins in speaking of the counterfeiting in the East said to a Chkosicxe reporter yesterday None of the 1804 dollars or the old Roman coins mentioned In the dispatch have appeared on the Pacific coast to inv knowledge The 1804 dollar is not worth 500 as stated in the telegram for the price vanes according to tne condition of the coin I have seen them sold for 25Q and again as high as 1800 There are now bat twelve of the original 1804 dollars in existence so tar as known These are all welt authenticated specimens and a prominent Eastern numismatist is now at work upon a small volume which will give a history of the 1804 rarity and a short sketch of each original piece known to collectors Electrotypes of the 1804 dollar can be purchased for 7 60 at the Mint The only fraudulent specimens that I have come across in San Francisco lately is the silver quarter of 1853 withTt the small arrow at each side of the ve They are worth about 3 each and swindlers have been in the habit of taking the IS08 quarter which has no arrow and which is only worth about 3D cents and converting the 8 into a 3 A Burglar Caught Ed Freeman a brother of the notorious Gus Freeman was arrested yesterday by Detectives Bee and Harper and Officer Martin and taken to the city prison where he was charged with burglary About the 1st oi January last Freeman and a crook named Ed Brown alias Chlnaface entered the lodging house kept by William Kohler at 28 Ellis street during the absence of the family and stole a lot of clothing and other articles Brown was captured Bhortly after the robbery and was sentenced to San Qaentln for two years snd a half Freeman left the city and did riot return until yesterday when he was recognized by the officers The British steel ship Ventura of Glas goWj Captain Norman LUHa which was cleared from this port by Starr Company August 6th with a cargo of 2032 tons of wheat and flour for HVestport Ireland returned last evening disabled and dismantled Many of her span were gone and her deck and rigging looked like a complete wreck Captain Lillia told a thrilling story of the ships experience in 4 terrific hurricane encountered August 18th and of the re roartable survival of the ship with the loss of but one of the crew For hours the ship was so nearly capsized that the yards dipped in the water and at one time she capsized so far in the terrific gale that her masts lay in the water and her keel was lifted above the surface Captain Lillia say in his long report that all went well until the evening of the 18th iust when the ship had reached latitude 28 deg 40 tain north longitude 128 deg 57 mjft west At 7 oclock a peculiar appearance of the sky was observed Toward morning the furling of sails was begun under warnings of a storm A singular moaning in die wind was noticed At 9 a a fearful gale was blowing and the deck was securely battened down Sail after sail blew away and by midnight a terrific hurricane was on The waves were mountainous and the ship was almost on er beam ends A wave about 100 feet high struck the ship passed complefelyover her carrying everything before it and washing overboard two men Paul Vos an able seaman and John Snoto a sailmaker The latter was washed back by a wave but Vos was drowned The last seen of him he was on the weather quarter in the terrible sea clinging to a piece of a boat Efforts were made to save Mm but the ship soon drifted out ot reach For hours the sea made fearful havoc with the ship taking away boats bridge wheel box and everything movable as well as breaking and tearing thing things away in every direction The hurricane lasted all day and all the next nurht and most of the time the masts were buried in the sea It seemed constantly to the crew lashed to the rigging that their last moment had come A dead calm of ten minutes occurred at 5 jl showing that the center of the storm was reached but it came on with redoubled fury so that as the captain say we could fancy there were thousands of voices screaming in the aifj with most distressing moans and one had to turn his eyes away from the dreadful sight By morning the storm Jiad moderated the work of clearing away the wreck began a portion of the cargo was jettisoned sails were set water pumped from the hold and the return to port was begun There are several vessels which mnst have been in the track of the storm which have not yet been heard from lowinr directors zVBBaih TV Barbour WimamE Bridge Charles Bridge
