commence a suit against tbe city of Oakland to recover about 10 000 which has been paid oer the county since 1S54 for certain costs and fees of the Police Court Count Expert DaUs has been on a still hunt for evidence which would show that such payments by tbe county were unauthorized by law and at a regular session of the Board of Super vlors this morning District Attorney Snook rendered an opinion in which be names the city as alone responsible for I the expenses of the Police Court He cuea sections ot tne nuney act as the basis of his deductions According to his opinion there Is no proviso whereby the city departments of Justice can collect tees from the county County Expert Davis filed the following statement with the Supervisors In accordance with the District Attorney opinion handed to your honorable body this date It is shown that th bill of the city ef Oakland against the county must necessarily be rejected I would state that for years past these bills have bean whose means and capa cities erable the purchase of real es tate there Is considerable Interest over the auction sale of the McCreery block on McAllister street between Baker and Lyon which will be held on Thurs day of this week This property has been in the possession of Andrew McCreery for something like forty years and was one of his very earliest Investments About eighteen months ago he disposed of another block In this locallt and It Is interesting to know that many of the purchasers made quite a good thing out of their Investments For Instance the corner of McAllister and Baker streets was purchased by Kelly for 11300 and the other day It was resold to Robert Wanne maker for 16000 an advance of nearly 40 per cent and lots have been resold on several boundary streets In each stance at an advance ot over 20 per cent What Mr McCreery original outlay for this property was Is not stated but the region when he Invested there was but a sandhill waste and In the light of latter day developments the Investment seems like an inspiration However this Is but one Instance of his great judgment In real estate purchases for In every instance the growth ot the city has followed the lines of his prognostication He la selling now because It has been represented to him that the vacant blocks In that neigh bo hood seriously retard the growth of the region The block has been subdvlded Ints thirty seven building lots and the auctioneers Baldwin A Hammond announce that they will be sold without reserve a A Patrolmans Mistake Harvey llson and John Whalen were arrested a week ago Monday by Officer Madden on a charge of burglary in entering a grocery store on Clementina street and were release from custody yesterday During their examination in Judge Joachtmsen a court It
