CAL STAMP, TRANSFER FROM IOWA STATE Commodores' Stamp Is 6-9 Rebounder Amos (Tree) Davis, the 6-foot-ll Palmetto High of Miami eager, was recruited by Gulf Coast coach Jack Jackson to fill the void left by the graduated Butch Taylor, who led the Commodores to back-to-back state junior college championships. But Davis isn't even the Commodores' starter at center at this stage of pre-season practice, reported Jackson as he drills his charges for the Nov.

17-18 season-opening appearance in the Abraham Baldwin tournament at Tifton, Ga. Running No. 1 at the pivot spot is Cal Stamp, a 6-9 sophomore transfer from Iowa State University. "As of now Cal probably has won the starting position at the post," noted Jackson, whose team was third in last year's national tournament at Hutchinson, Kan. Stamp, a native of East Moline, 111., and an All- Stater, played on Iowa State's freshman team last year and set a school season freshman rebounding record with 16.7 per game while averaging 15.8 points.

"Maury John, the coach at Iowa State, told me he was counting heavily on Cal as a starter this season," revealed Jackson. "But Cal became disenchanted with Iowa State. We had written to him back in high school and he remembered it. He called us and said he wanted to get out of the snow and cold weather." Stamp has one year of eligibility on the junior college level. "He will be heavily recruited from Gulf Coast," pointed out Jackson.

"In fact, he probably has received 50 questionaires from major universities. He is a very dedicated player. He is very capable at his position. When he came out of high school such schools as Drake, Maryland, North Carolina and Houston tried.to sign him." ''Petty and Bobby have no love for me and it's kind of a mutual feeling," Foyt told the Hous ton Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. "There's no love lost on either side. I can see why since I took more than $60,000 of their money back to Texas." Foyt has entered only three NASCAR races this year and has two victories and a second place.

He won at Daytona, collecting $33,500, and Ontario, receiving $28,595, and was second at Atlanta, wprth $10,300. "They're going to be tough on me, especially here right near my home town," Foyt said. "They don't like a stranger coming in on their events and winning just like I don't like a stranger coming to Indy and winning." Foyt said it will take a new track record of more than 170 miles an hour to qualify for the. 500-mile race at Texas World Speedway. Qualifying starts Friday.

got the pole and broken the track record," Foyt said. "That really gets them. It looks like Bobby has the best chance for the pole this week, but I'm going to run his butt off. He's going to earn it." Foyt never officially has raced at the Texas World Speedwr.y although he took his Indianapolis car there last year and tested at speeds up to 190 miles an hour. "I could average 225 up there with an Indy car," Foyt said.

'That's really too fast for a race." He said the turns have higher banks than at Indianapolis, allowing the car to go at near full speed all the way around the two-mile oval. Foyt predicted it would take more than 200 miles an hour to win the pole position at Indianapolis next year. He said he already has started on his car and it will be much smaller than it was last year. Bruce Walton Is Different LOS ANGELES don't mind people asking me questions about my brother, really I don't," said Bruce Walton, the football player. "It only irritates me when they call me Bill." Then he laughed and you knew even that didn't bother the easy-going older brother of UCLA's basketball all-everything.

"Basically," Bruce Walton added, "we're very different. He's on the quiet side and I'm extroverted. Where he might want to do something quietly, I'd rather do it loudly." The offensive tackle from La Mesa, near San Diego, has started every his varsity career at UCLA. The 6- foot-5, 265-pounder played on a team which won, only, two games as a junior in a school year when younger brother Bill, at 6-11 and a sophomore, led the Bruins to their sixth straight NCAA title and voted college basketball's Player of the Year. Svare makes Thomas ineligible to play for the rest of the season. Thomas was acquired before the start of this season from Dallas for running back Mike Montgomery and wide receiver Billy Parks. He was activated for the first time last Sunday but saw no action. He did not take calisthenics with the team then, walked along the sidelines during the national anthem and sat on the bench throughout the game staring straight ahead. "I have been weighing this decision for a considerable amount of time," Svare.

said. 'The conclusion is that Duane is not prepared to play this season. Obviously, he's got some problems that won't permit him to play now. 'His actions Sunday were not deliberate and were not intended to be disrespectful." Thomas went through a full workout Tuesday and looked quick on. kickoff and punt returns.

"He is a very complicated young man," Svare said, "The problem is not narcotics. The marijuana incident in Texas was the only incident." Svare said the club "is not hurting" for running bacIV and the status of Thomas will have no influence on the Chargers' draft next year. (UPI) The Catchers Carlton Fisk of the Boston Red Sox and Dave Rader of the San Francisco Giants won the Sporting News rookie-of-the-year awards Wednesday in a poll of major league players. Pitching choices were hander Dick Tidrow of the Indians in the American League and southpaw Jon Matloack of the Mets in the national. Fisk's selection by the players marked only the second time since the national sports weekly began rookie awards in 1946 that an American League catcher had won the honor. Rader, however, is the third National League backstop to earn the rookie citation in the past five years, the weekly said. The Sporting News also said Boston's Luis Tiant in the American League and Cincinnati's Bobby Tolan in the National awards.

"Early in 1971, following a freak injury to his right shoulder, Tiant was jobless and, after he did hook up with a major league club late in the season, his record with Boston was 1-7," the publication said. "This past season Tiant very nearly pitched the Red Sox to a it divisional championship, said. He finished with a 15-6 record and a 1.91 earned run average. "Tolan, from his zero production with the Reds' in 1971, shook off the effects of operations to repair the twice- torn achilles tendon in his right leg and, while he didn't match his impressive statistics of two years, earlier, prbved his recovery almost complete by putting together a productive 1972 season with the National League champions, batting .283, driving in 82 runs and swiping 41 bases," the weekly said.
