Star-Bulletin Monday. January 20. 1992 B-3 RADIO PLAY: Fine cast is 'Blame'-less KORL to air CNN news 24 hours a day which brutally mocks the sensitivity of lyrics and the emotional content (Adults sometimes forget this, but teens feel the pain of heartbreak and alienation just as deeply as theatergoers in their 60s!) Maybe in another 20 years, someone with an open mind will produce a revue that does justice to the rich diversity of movie music of the rock era. Country music gets the same patronizing treatment The best number of the country segment is "Blazing Saddles" and since the Mel Brooks film was a comic-satire, there's no harm in doing it as comedy. Pestana is the featured performer and seems to have a good time stroking his horse.

Other embellishments in the show include a single appearance by dancer Claudia Parisien-Heu, who joins Arsenault for a duet on "Place in the Sun," and costumed cameo work by Judy, Stacy and Candace Yoshioka who appear as dancing theater snacks at the beginning of each act Musical director Emmett G. Yoshioka also delivers a spoken line or two from "the pit," and leads a small but competent quintet in providing instrumental s. Good clear sound, comfortable volume, an attractive set and those theater seats on wheels enhance the performances of a first-rate cast and make this so-so revue an entertaining evening. John Berger has covered the local entertainment scene since 1972. Continued from Page B-1 My Mind." Seibel's solo, "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Blight's comic lead on "I Said No." The "choreography" that features the ensemble performing in theater seats on wheels.

And then there's "Miss Celie's Blues." The arrangement gives all four women some fine moments and then lets Mayo-Souza ease into the featured spot. It's a gem of a performance and one of the brightest moments of all. That number, though, is one of about six songs in the entire show that is not in the Broadway andor Big Band pop format. And it is just about the only such song that is not staged as a joke. That's where this show irks.

It's hard to believe that when the original producers were cutting their favorite 200 tunes to "only 76" (according to the program notes), they could find so few songs from 38 years of rock-era movie music to include. Start with "Rock Around the Clock" from "Blackboard Jungle" and keep going till you get to "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)" from "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves" and there are a lot of well-written songs to choose from. Instead, when rock is included, it's presented as a joke. "Help" and "What's New, Pussycat?" are tossed off in about eight words each. "Town Without Pity" is presented in a longer arrangement people are expected to be hired.

"Let's be realistic about it, OK?" Cassara said. "You've got 30-some-odd radio stations in this market, more than half of them are losing money. The radio market is not growing, it's been flat for several years. It's not the kind of situation that you come into and create a huge overhead and then hope that you can generate the revenues to cover it. That would just be sort of, to me, an ass-backwards way of doing it-Said Schaller: "You don't expect to be No.

1 with a news operation, but if it's run properly and you watch your expenses and so forth, there's certainly a feeling that it can be profitable." They said the decision to hire reporters, and the mix between local and international news, will be made after a general manager is found and the station settles in. In the meantime, they said startup money has been spent in other ways. "State-of-the-art" transmitter equipment will be installed on Campbell Estate in Kunia, where KORL will share a tower with two other radio stations KORL also took over the 850 Richards St. studio and equipment used by KHFX 105.1 FM, which left after teaming up with another station in a cost-cutting move. "We're looking forward to getting on the air and providing what we think will be the best radio news station in town," Cassara said.

"At least, that's what we're going to try and make it." gest among adult males. Of the two, llth-ranked KHVH is the more dedicated news organization, getting reports from a staff of 14 and the ABC, NBC and Mutual radio networks, among others. Tim Tindall, KHVH's vice president and general manager, said there might be some initial curiosity about KORL, but thought listeners in the long term would choose his established station over a "novelty news operation." The purpose of radio is not to deliver the audio portion of a television signal," said Tindall, a former TV news anchorman. "People don't necessarily like to listen to television audio without seeing the pictures. It just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

It's a very economical way to get money for your product, but it seems a waste of a good radio station to do that." LEE Reynolds, Unistar's vice-president of affiliate relations, said the format has proven "quite successful" among the 130 stations that carry it. "I think a lot of stations have better sales success with the format than they do necessarily ratings success," he said. But Coral Communications acknowledged that in these times of recession and slack ad revenues it was taking the low-end approach to KORL's revival by using a satellite feed and not hiring its own news staff. Fewer than 10 Star-Bulletin staff THE proposed new owners of a Honolulu radio station hope CNN's success on television will carry over to their medium. Coral Communications Corp.

a firm backed by shareholders like former Gov. George Ariyoshi and developer Tom Gentry announced this month it has purchased the venerable KORL 650 and will revive it as a 24-hour news station, with sign-on targeted 't or late February. Its research, the irm says, shows there's a niche for the round-the-clock product "At present, there's no station in the market radio-wise that's doing that," said KITV general manager Richard Schaller, another shareholder. "There are other news stations, but they also have talk and sports and things of that sort, and the feeling is that if you want news at any time during the day, you'll have a source for it." The backbone of the station's broadcasts will be CNN Headline News. KORL will carry the audio portion of the TV newscast, getting the signal from Unistar Radio Network a 10-year-old Colorado company that satellite-delivers music and other packaged formats to affiliates nationwide.

For local news, KORL has struck a deal with KITV to share stories gathered by the television station's reporters. Planning for the project began about a year ago, said Anthony Cassara, a partner and former president of the firm that owns TV station KTLA in Los Angeles. KORL went off the air after its Dallas-based owner filed for bankruptcy in 1987. It was bought last year for a reported $375,000 by George Vandeman, a Los Angeles attorney and Cassara's friend. Coral Communications attorney Vernon Char said Vandeman is the sole owner pending Federal Communications Commission approval of its new shareholders, which also includes Rick Takemoto, Ariyo-shi's son-in-law.

The FCC's local office said the connections between KORL and KITV did not appear to violate any of its regulations. KORL has a long, proud tradition that began in 1946 when it signed-on as KPOA, Honolulu's fourth radio station. Over the years, it went through numerous formats that included talk, easy-listening and Top 40, among those who sat before its microphone are Les Keiter, Granny Goose, Kam Fong, Tom Dancer, Krash Kealoha, Jacqueline "Honolulu Skylark" Lindsey and even, for a brief while, Mayor Frank Fasi. Honolulu now has two radio stations that emphasize news: KGU 760 AM and KHVH 990 AM. In the latest Arbitron radio survey, they drew about 8 percent of the listening audience, and tend to be stron HOT! HOT! HOT! y.
