SLOW TO SIGN HESITlTE TO TAKE FLEDGES TO ABSTAIT Officers of the Road Say They Are Putting Employes to a Test Oakland Branch Office of the Chronicle KM Broadway corner lnth street OAKLAND January 26 The employes of the Oakland consolidated lines In this city are Just now debating the advisability of signing a document which the company has issued under rather peculiar circumstances and which binds its subscribers to keep out of saloons at all times Superintendent Rudolph has had the pledge distributed among the men with an urgent request accompanying that they aSx their signatures The document placed before the men Is nothing more or less than a temperance pledge It requires that the employes of the Oakland Consolidated road retrain from entering a saloon at any time and Is embellished with a few parallel conditions which are not altogether pleasing to the conductors and motormen The pledge is generaly regarded as a Hobson choice affair but the secre tary of the road has this to say in behalf ot tne ODUgation submitted There have been many accidents on the various lines lately and this pledge was started tor toe purpose ot seeing now many total abstainers we had in our employ and also to see how many would be wlling to take the pledge Many accl dents have been attributed to the use ot drink and It is only reasonable that the company should wish to protect Itself from damage suits by all legitimate means The pledge Is not obligatory The men who sign It If they be drinking men win not gain anything by so doing and the man who does not sign It will be In no danger of losing his Job We have heard of no complaints from the men and do not expect to The point upon which the railway employes lay great stress is the apparent attempt to control the conduct of the men when they are off dLtv and have laid aside their uniforms There Is a general protest also from the men against binding any employe of the road not to take even one drink as the men declare the presumption will then be that they are given to drunkenness and require such a rule to govern them Thus far but eight of the employes of the road have signed the pledges and there is no telling what the balance of the men will do IXCESED AT WATMIRE Oakland Board of Trade Voices Its Disappointment OAKLAND January 28 The members ot the Board of Trade are deeply Incensed at Assemblyman James A Waymire They asked him to support the bill making it possible to garnishee the salary of a public officer and were astonished to day to receive a letter from him In which he announced that he could not support the measure and that the Committee on Code Revision had unanimously pronounced against it The letter was read at the meeting of the Exchange to night and there was a general attack on the Alameda representative It was decided to send a copy of the letter and also the resolution passed by the Exchange to every trade body in the State The letter from Mr Waymire was addressed to Secretary Webb Pierce and was as follows Tours of January 9th has been duly received together with a copy of the bill I have carefully considered the bill sent me and a similar bill Introduced by Mr Leavitt has been discussed in the Committee on Code Revision We unanimously came to the conclusion that It was unwise to subject the salaries of public officials to attachment for the reason that the nubile are Inter ested In having their officials secure In their salaries so they may effectually perform their duties The remedy of creditors Is to refuse credit to those who will not pay A resolution was unanimously passed declaring that the exchange did not believe the reasons advanced by Waymire were founded on either equity or Justice and that It was believed that It was the duty of the legislative body to make laws that would protect the mercantile world from the acts of dishonest officials as well as private dtliena Death of Mrs A Gates OAKLAND January 2 Mrs Abigail Gates wife ot ht late Gates Pointed Criticism of the Westminster Confession of Faith Rev James Woodworth secretary of the Presbyterian Union in an open communication has asked Rev William Rader to what denomination he referred as subscribing to infant damnation Mr Rader said last evening that the allusion in question was made in his Sunday evening sermon and added I am sorry to say that the Presbyterian church Is meant I do not mean to say that every Presbyterian believes such a horrible doctrine but I do mean to say that every Presbyterian tacitly subscribes to the dogma when be becomes a member of a church that has not been able thus far to expurgate It from Its confession ot faith The Westminster Confession says Elect Infants dying In Infancy are regenerated and saved by Christ through the spirit who moveth when and where and how be pleaseth I will submit this question to my friend Mr Woodworth hat becomes of the infants who are not of the elect The eed continues So also are an other elect persons who are Incapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the word It Is interesting to see how Protestant divines have wrestled with this declaration Dr Archibald Alexander late In the last century abandoned the doctrine The Hodges later Introduced new and more comfortable interpretations but when Professor Brlggs made an effort to make the confession consistent with modern enlightened reason he was turned out of the Presbyterian fold He says It Is however contrary to the Westminster confession to believe In the salvation of all Infants or to believe In the salvation of any of the heathens who are capable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the word Professor Simpson of Glasgow was charged with heresy In 1728 for teaching the probability that baptized Infants were saved Now I repeat that Presbyterians as a rule do not actually accept such a dogma but up to date there Is not enough power Irr the Presbyterian church of America to change the Westminster confession of faith which ha been preserved In the alcohol of orthodoxy for 200 years The recent controversy In the Presbyterian church was on this very point President Patton of Princeton makes Inerrancy In the Bible the basis of Inspiration and Professors Hodge and Warfleld have gone far enough to say in the Presbyterian Review that a proved error in Scripture contradicts not only our doctrine but the Scripture claims and therefore its Inspiration in making these claims No wonder my friend Woodworth op poses Biblical criticism I am glad this question is asxeo ana i sincerely nope i have not made a false interpretation of these standards My reference to the damnation of infants In the sermon was used to Illustrate the te nrt theology of Jonah waiting for the Indiscriminate destruction of Nineveh In doing so I meant no reflection upon the great spiritual de nomination which has done so much for the salvation of the world BROUGHT BACK FROM DEXTER Voted Burglar Safe Behind Prlsoa Bars Sergeant John
