signal defeat of three favori tes in four races and fine line in all the erents were the features of the Golden Gate Fair at Oakland esterdaj And what terrible blows the backers of public form received to be sure Mystery the deliverer of the first knockout of the day to the talent is aptly named for she is certainly a mysterious little filly On Wednesday last Mystery finished about sight lengths behind Nero Yesterday she beat Nero six lengths with ease This goes far to verify the old proverb that hoss racin is a very onsartin business On the heels of Mysterys facer to the know ing ones Vinco the rankest outsider in the second race beat such supposedly great sprinters as Ida Glenn and Lyda Ferguson after the contest had narrowed down to Vinco and Gambo another fielder The lumps of money that went into the pool box from the owners of Glean and Ferguson would make the hair of the average pool buyer stand on end at siyht of of it and never were the members of a foiy combination of betting men fooled quite so badly If Lyda Ferguson could not win this heat race surely Ida Glenn would come to the rescue reasoned the members of the combination But two longshots finished first in both the first and seeond heats and the sure things went to the stable badly beaten and with their backers money thrown away in huge bundles Hotspur broke the back of the favorite backers the third racG ere the echo of the curses of the losers on the second ovent had died away and when the betting commenced in the last race the first choice followers had not sufficient money or nerve as a
