Putor I 1M COVENANT COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Ijl Sunday, Dec. 3 Gospel choir helps inmates find God SMYRNA, Del. (AP) "Echoes of Jof" offers Aaron R. Moore some challenges that directors of ordinary gospel choirs never know. When there are discipline problems, rehearsal stops and memberspray.

It got so bad a year ago they had to report to Sunday morning services and sit in the choir box without singing for a month. "Initially, they were angry behind the disciplining, but later they appreciated it," Moore said. Furthermore, they have to accept the rules: they're prison inmates. The choir's first tape, "We Are Not Ashamed," was a sellout. But the blessing was mixed; Moore had to refuse the invitations to perform that ensued, because only a few of the allowed to travel.

And the choir is now an a capella group because the pianist "got moved to maximum security a few years ago," said Chaplain Frank Pennell of the Delaware Correctional Center near Smyrna. The choir has "done a good job without music. "A majority of them are just learning how to sing and they pick it up by ear. Some have sung on the street Now they sing behind bars. Echoes of Joy, averaging 18 to 24 members, sings during Sunday and other Christian services at the prison.

Ira Shy grew up with Moore in Wilmington. "I remember him from when I was a little kid and I remember him always being a singer," Moore said. "At one time we did sing together on a young adult choir." But Shy, 43, was in and out of jail as well as church. Shy, serving 12 years for drug trafficking, said his problems came from not having a personal relationship with God. Now he has that relationship, ha said, and "it's been easy since I decided to do it right." Being a "born-again" Christian is a prerequisite for membership.

"We discern that when we interview," said Prospective members also take a 15-week class on basic Christian principles, then serve a 60-day probation, and "if everything's fine, they stay on," he said. "The Lord is. working through the choir," said Arthur E. Cleckly, 26, who has served two years of a three-year sentence for intent to deliver marijuana. "It's a blessing to see Christ working in their lives.

We may be cast down by society, but the Lord has forgiven us." Raymond C. Davis, 39, who wrote the title song of the choir's second tape, "Jesus Saves," was "born again" in 1986. "I realized my life wasn't going anywhere. I was a drug addict, an alcoholic and I had no relationship with my six kids. I hadn't really been a father," said Davis, who became eligible for parole in August after three years of a seven-year term for robbery and conspiracy.

"I didn't have a friend in "the That's how I know Jesus saves. He stepped right in and showed me JXL. what I needed in my life. He has truly cured m'e of my drug addiction and took the taste of alcohol from me." About 200 of the 500 copies of "Jesus Saves" have been sold at $5 each since it was recorded last December, Pennell said. All 500 copies of "We Are Not Ashamed" were sold within two years of its 1986 recording. The proceeds go to buy materials for Bible classes, and members get $50 on release from prison. Choir rehearsals open with prayer, a Scripture and personal testimonies.

Then Moore takes over. If it's a new song, he sings it, then the choir sings it back. The members' enthusiasm, and their ability to learn quickly, lets him know they enjoy it. "They remember what they hear without music and that's hard to do. Usually a person can remember a tune before they remember the words.

These brothers can remember a tuneand the words without music. That's a gift and an art to be able to do that." But there are problems. "There are attitude problems. What they are mainly are spiritual growth problems. The brothers are learning how to live for Christ and dealing with it and sometimes they bring that stuff to rehearsal," said Moore, First United Methodist 903 Third Street Worship DESSERT BUFFET FOLLOWING CONCERT 8:45 10:45 A.M.

Larson la I I II aw m. I cane, van us nay nx aouua HE TAKES YOU AT YOUR WORD! Remember the time when a man's word was as good as his name? You have known a person whose promise was as reliable as a legalized document. When that man madeJi pledge, you could count on what he said! This is still true of the words and promises of the Lord "Forever, LORD, Your word is settled in heaven" (Psalm Jesus said it this way "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away" (Matthew The claim of the Scriptures is that WE CAN TAKE GOD AT HIS WORD! Not one word He has spoken will fail. But there is another side to this coin. God also takes us at our word.

He requires that we keep the words of worship which we speak to Him "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned" (Matthew King Solomon knew the peril of insincere words "Do not be rash with your mouth. And let not your mouth utter anything hastily before God. For God in heaven, and you on earth; Therefore let your words be few. Forji dream comes through much activity, And a fool's voice is known by his many words.

When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed Better not to vow than to vow and not pay" (Ecclesiastes For example, how may times have you recited the Lord's Prayer, asking for forgiveness upon the basis of your forgiveness of other men? DO YOU THESE WORDS: Do you want God to treat you as you treat other men? Perhaps it's time to change your WORDS OF PRAYER. Perhaps it's time to call upon the Lord for grace and mercy based upon Christie sacrifice for you, rather than pleading for God to forgive your sins just as you forgive other sinners. Wausau lb The nonprofit fitness group was founded in 1981 by Jeannie Blocher, "40, of Germantown, who thought secular exercise music negatively influenced her and her children. Body and Soul now has more than 200 teachers leading aerobics in 18 states and several foreign countries. Blocher choreographed steps to Christian hits, trained teachers in her basement and advertised on Christian radio to attract teachers and students. Macaleer, 39, had been taking exercise classes for years and was about to look for an instructor's job three years ago, but her religion got in the way.

"There were always just some words from some of the songs that I knew I could not stand up in front of the ladies and lead," she said. "Body and Soul helps me to stay in shape, but it is also a wonderful way of praising God, my Lord and Savior," said Macaleer, a Presbyterian. By Kathryn Canavan Gannett News Service Karen Macaleer wears leotards, pink headbands and wrist weights when she ministers to women in Newark, Del. Welcome to Christian aerobics exercise spiritual as well as physical. "Bow-and-arrow arms, get ready to get your pulse up there," Macaleer exhorts to the rhythm of contemporary religious music.

Gone are the rock music lyrics that some of these fitness fans object to. Also out: hip gyrations and suggestive movements. In: more exercise wear. These exercisers tune up to songs by religious artists such as Sandy Patti and Amy Grant. They jump and sway to such tunes as "Sweet Victory," "Always Triumphant" and "Keep on Pressing On." Macaleer teaches aerqbics with Body and Soul, one of more than 20 services across the country that offer exercise programs with a religious focus.
