from tbe local pride attached to the event there is an internal rivalry which accounts for much of the spread wbicli is made Everyone knows that the individual who carries off the first prise will not only receive the handsome trophy which will reward the winner San Pablo line will be out to day so the town will get an early start on the festivities that are to culminate in such a blaze of glory to morrow ELECTRIC MOTORS A GREAT DATS SPORT The Gentlemen Jockeys Protest They Refused to ace With YsabeL Lord Talbot Clifton and His Coaeb Meteor Cause a Sensation THE ADVANTAGES 0VEE STKAM POWER Economy in the Use of the Electrical Current Points for Business Men To the man who has been accustomed to use steam power all his life a change is apt to come hard because habit is always difficult to conquer and because when a roan is accustomed to do either big or little things in a certain way it is difficult to pet him to do them in any other way The advantages of a change must be very apparent to induce a change from one method of power using to another and therefore it must be evident now great these advantages are to induce changes in so many cases irom steam and gas to electric power Some of tbe advantages in the use of electric power obtained by simply tapping an underground wire and pasiing the current through an eleciric motor may here be recited to account for the changes referred to 8s having occurred in the power using districts of the city The first and most conspicuous even if not the greatest advantage in tbe use of the motor is the great saving in room In place of a steam boiler and steam pipes stowed iu a boiler room and engine room the engine itself with its flywheel long shafting belting etc there is a single compact small raa efilne occupying not one twentieth of the Kpace required for the engine and boiler This machine is capable of supplying all tne powerequireu up to tue limit oi us capacity If at any time it is necessary to have more power the motor will find ready sale and can be given in part payment tor a more powerful one Compare this with the serious problem of increasing tbe steam power in an establishment which means a very heavy outlay for boiler and engine and little better price than that of scrap iron for the old boiler and engine In tbe matter of savine of space and the ease with which increased power can be but will gain an amount of glory which obtained as well as in the saving of time from a social standpoint cannot be meas in ra iking such a change from one motor to another as compared with the time required to install a new steam plant tbe advantages are all on the side of the elec trie motor There are other matters however which can be advanced with equal force in favor ured in dollars Captain Bobadils famous reasoning as to why he was the best swordsman in the world will be in a sense applicable Looking at it from the lines on which he argued the situation is as frllrtra Th TTnitf1 HttA i Ihft get tinjr tbe right people to serve will take na mean Wly either to decide There was a mild sensation at the Bay District track yesterday when Talbot Clifton on the box of his celebrated coach Meteor drove across the track to the infield and lined bis team up heads to tbe fence in great shape The ladies wared their handkerchiefs while tbe talent mumbled something about seeing queer things when without a gun There was a very large attendance to see seven really excellent races The infield was packed with handsome carriages and tbe clubhouse was crowded with the select followers of Blingum The occasion was also marred with a new departure in the furniture of the oflJcials They all wore rosettes of black and orange which are the colors of the Jockey Club The day was specially set apart for the benefit of the Childrens Hospital and the receipts will greatly augment the finances of that worthy institution The feature of the afternoon from a society standpoint was tbe pony race for gentlemen riders The distance was at one half mile on the flat The first two races were run amid a tantalizing silence because all were waiting for the event which would bring to the post the cream of Blingums society riders There was an unfortunate misunderstanding at the beginning of the play which caused a lull and came very near upsetting all calculations on the form of tbe race lhe bookmakers were obliged to stand idle on their boxes and listen to the wild rumors of the real cause of the trouble which floated about the ring paddock and iawn One rumor had it that the judges were investigating the eligibility of Tod Sloan as a gentleman rider Another rumor went the rounds that Kick Hall wanted to ride but the judges could not entertain tbe proposition because he had been accused of pulling his whiskers The trouble was at last located Tbe gentiemen jockeys refused to ride in the race wim i label as she was not of pony measurement When this was finally adjusted by scratching the mare another difficulty arose The four gentlemen riders were found to be short of top boots breeches and a few other necessary details in their make up for the saddle After the patience of the crowd had been almost exhausted Pretty Bob rushed into the ring and in his usual sweet notes announced Scratch Ysabel and Rafferty Put Simpkins on Congo Oo on and book That settled it and every bod made a rush to play Finesse Tobins gelding was played off the boards and be won in a walk Conejo was second with tbe other pair last Soledad quit the maiden class in the opening event Addie and Halifax who finished noses apart for the place will soon bave another chance to do better Old Hy Dy played cunning in the mile race He laid well up with his field and coming on like a good fellow in the stretch landed the money cleverly by a neck from rtaindrop Marietta was in tbe next block but she got third money The handicap was the best race seen at the track this year Handicapper Brongb deserves credit for the way he brought the field together It was 2 to 1 and pick your choice in the betting but one could hardly locate the winner even when they hit tbe stretch At that point Arundel was leading by ahead with the remainder of tbe field all in a heap PijzoU made an excellent race on Utile Cripple and landed fats mount a winner by a length from Arundel who had nose the best ol Malo Diablo The latter would have probably won had it not been for an unfortunate crowding at the first turn Carmel won the race over the jumps after Wag and Mutineer hard collided and tumbled in a heap at the Head ot the stretch Both boys escaped injury Lon nie was second three lengths before Zaragoza Mantell at 25 to won tbe sixth race from Empress oi Norfolk Thebot member TiUie was third Rear Guard wound up tbe days sport by easily landing tbe mile race in fast time Red Glen was second only a short head before Del Norte Track and Fad dock Notes Tod Sloan covered himself with glory yesterday He received a round of applause when he returned to weigh out after his good ride on Hy Dy Eddie Parser and the well dressed Charlie Qninn burned up tbe sing over tbe victory of Little Cripple The latter won 4000 and Purser went him 1000 better There was an immense crowd present and as every bodyowners trainers jockeys and holders of complimentary badges bad to pay the hospital fnnd most have cleared a good sum George Rose gave tbe purse won by Rear Guard to the hospital fund It amounted to 200 President Williams and Mr Lissak deserve fcreat credit for the clever way they handled tbe benefit Tbe Not a Very Serious Thing After All The School Fond Exhausted is a sign whch hangs on the grill work of the Treasurers office It is an old sign which has made its appearance annually for a long time While it looks ominous nothing very damaging will come ot it It means that the money in the fund is all gone But the teachers salaries for April with two exceptions have all been paid The exceptions got around late and had to be registered as will all other demands against the fnnd for a few days One of tbe causes of the annual stringency in the School Department money market is that the second apportionment from the State to the city is not paid until July In the mean time howerer Treasurer Widber will not permit the teachers to suffer for although he is a quiet man and says little he already has a scheme for relief in his mind Eight years ago the Legislature passed an act authorizing the Treasurer to make use of any such special fund as he may have in bis possession to pay teachers salaries the money to be returned from the first collection of taxes in July It is thought that the Treasurer will find just such a surplus fund stowed away in his big safe and that it will be forthcoming to meet the teachers May salaries Fredericks to Be Sentenced William Fredericks the murderer of Cashier Herrick of the Sn Francisco Savings Union is to be in Judge Murphys court next Wednesday morning An order will then be made fixing a new date for the execution of the death sentence renounced against Fredericks by Judge evy Execution of the sentence on the day first fixed was prevented by the pending of an appeal which has since been determined adversely to the prisoner Dont Wait Too Long Good things do not last always Over 350 instrumental selections by the most noted
