next Saturday week horses are arriving every day frbm many different points There is iitry reason to believe despite the opening of several nF winter tracks that the class wiy be fully as good as last season All the stables represented in 1903 and 1904 will be back with the exception of Barney Schrelber and Newman who had Don Domp the gray ghost and several others To more than offset this loss there will be half a dozen new stables In addition to this the best horses at Ascot Park will figure In stake races run at Oakland and Ingleside Notwithstanding the weight stipulation the Burns handicap has this year attracted over 109 entries Walter Jennings is the biggest nominator witn eign me various other stakes haye filled satisfactorily although the totais in several instances are not football team Is still woefully stale and overworked and the additional fae that over half of the places on the big eleven are unsettled the blue and gold finds Itself to day in really desperr ate straits Only the most heroic efforts on thev part of coaches and trainers can pull the team out of the slump and put it on its feet in any shape to give Stanford a decent match on November 12th Coach Hopper finds that the task entirely too much for him and the force of coaches and trainers about him and he has sent summons to all the old veterans within reach urging them to come to Berkeley and aid him in putting the big eleven into trim for its great battle There are two new arrivals in the person of Albertson the old varsity tacklo and captain of the victorious 1902 team and Hudson the clever end and field captain of the last three years Inese two will devote their whole time to the tackle and end positions respectively Another arrival Is Dr Frank Simpson who was head coach when Hopperwas assistant in 1901 Simpsons first observation was that the team was in a wretched plight and needed rest above an thing else The snap that has characterised the linemen and should be their chief point at this stage of the game is missing and his recommendation has caused Hopper to let up on the heavy grinding scrimmage work What la causing the California partisans fully as much alarm as the slump of their eleven is the fact that neither of the guards or backs and only one of the ends have been picked out of the squad of two dozen likely men Aside from Stroud center Hsttmuller and Force tackles and Howard end the other seven places are waiting to he filled The recent Injuries to Gray and Kerr make the question of the guard places even more doubtful The best line on the final line up was afforded this evening when Hopper picked bis first team with the four men just named and the following for the rest of the eleven Elliott right end OToole left guard Stern right guard Booth quarter back Kern right half Sperry full back and Snedlgar left half Of this line up the only likely changes are at guard and at quarterback Authough Booth is doing very good work at giving signals he may yet he displaced by Belknap who has bad greater experience Gray and Kerr may yet win out over OToole and Stern Elliott at end is day by day demonstrating his superiority over Oliver and Henry and will probably keep the post he lias earned As Hopper has announced secret practice behind the fence of the old field from how until the day of the intercollegiate game there will be little opportunity afforded for the rest of 4he season to note the progress of the eleven IICK AND OAKLAND WILL PLAY SATUBDAY DR LwGE TAKES LATONIA FEATURE Championship of the Academic Athletic League Will 6th at 230 The game will be played on the gridiron at the Presidio Athletic Grounds which will be put in good shape for the occasion This will be the first time In the history of the Academale Athletic League that either Oakland or Lick High School supporters have ever played In the final game for the championship Lick without doubt has the best team that has ever represented the school on a gridiron and the same can be sajd of the Oakland aggregation Local experts say the Lick team Is better than either freshman team 1 the intercollegiate game of October 5th and better than any prep school team ever seen in California The Oakland High School team for some time has been coached by Bishop the Belmont and Olympic full back and has shown marked Improvement under his instruction The game will be played in thlrty flye and thirty minute halves The line uo with a few possible changes during the game will be as follows Oakland Position Lick Majcolmn Deacon Livingston White Lanagaa iv
