Berkeley Politicians in a Scandal Board of Public Works Contest McKusick Estate Troubles Settled Berkeley ba a political scandal which was batched in a back room in Oakland Sereral prominent politicians are mixed up in the afT iir nnd a strong effort has been made to keep the matter qaiet George Oumpertz who is a candidate for Town Clark accuses his opponent for the same office Young with an attempt to sell him 400 votes in one block to be delivered on election day The election is to be held next month and things are getting rather warm in a political war in the town Mr Oumpertz is a Terr popular young man and is at present employed in the County Recorders office in Oskland He was seen yesterday by a Chromcl reporter and told the story the attempt to make nim giro up a bribe Last Saturday afternoon said he I received a message at my office to the effect that Mr Young wanted to see me on political business I made an engagement and met him at 4 oclock in a back room He told me that we might juit as well get down to business at once and then he opened up on his proposition He said tbat he could control 400 votes in the town but these were not enough to elect him He suggested tbat if I paid him 75 at once he would guarantee to turn me over 400 votes on election day Besides this be said he would agree to deliver to me the Peoples party nomination for the office at once He also said that he bad the indorsement of a secret organization and that he would turn that over to me if I would put up the money I refused to havr anything to do with bis scheme and toll him so He then opened up on me and aid tbat there would be no use for me to try to expose him as it was simply my word against bis He said that he would flatly deny that be bad made me any proposition I told him I would se about tbat After i bad him identified by several people we parted company I am going to see my friends to day and we will then decide what course we pursue in the matter I do not know yet whether I will apply for a warrant for the arrest of Mr Young Oumpertz played clever rame on his opponent by having him fully identified right after the meeting in the back room The politicians Miller and Hughes are entitled to the seats now occupied by Mayor Davie Citv Attorney Peirsole and City Engineer Wilson will be determined next Saturday by the Superior Court sitting in bank The sereral attorneys in the case have fully agreed upon all the facts in the matter and the only thing remaining to be done is to hear argument upon the demurrer which has been interposed by the defendants who are the incumbents THE BTKC8ICK ESTATE The Heirs Settle Tbeir Difficulties With xeentor Spauldlng and Crr The difficulties between Spaulding and Carr executors of the estate of McKusick and the heirs of the deceased which bare boen the subject of much legal controversy of late were adjusted yesterday througb a conference of the attorneys of the parties in the case The hearing upon the citation to have bpauldlnz and Carr removed as executors was before Judge Ellsworth in the Superior Court yesterday The matter was continued however in order to allow the parties to get together or a conference as to terms Two consultations were had between the attorneys during the day and at last a satisfactory agreement was reached The citation was dismissed and the two executors ere still occupying that position although it is understood that they will now retire from the management of the estate Tbe main points involved In the com plaint of the heirs were with respect to the manner in which certsin money was handled The heirs claimed that funds which were Idle in the bank should have been invested They found fault also with tbe fact that tbe executors loaned 8 Emery and Abner Dobie 13500 on a promissory note without security Another ciuse of trouble was over the family allowance The executors wanted to charge Mis Susie Harms one of the daughters with 500 as her share of tbe allowance which was paid to her after the attained her majority She was married recently and her husband objected on the ground that his wife had taken charge of the home and cared for tbe minor danger to teamsters Between the tracks the roadway has been neglected and is sadly in need of repair A franchise was obtained on Army street from Folsom to the San Bruno road six years ago by the North Reach and Mission Railroad Company A double track was laid on the thoroughfare the following year Before cars could be pur on tne Omnibus Company succeeded in absorbing its rlvsl and the road
