State and connected himself with the California Cricket Club where he soon won a name ior himself by his skillful work behind the wickets In addition to his ability as a wicket keeper he is a stonewall batsman and can always be relied upon to eive the bowlers of opposing teams any amount of trouble to dispose of him In this respect he resembles Alec Bannerman the world famous cricketer the Gaelic and association games were introduced and met with a fair amount of favor Each game has now its adherents but the intercollegiate game Is sure to be the most popular on account of the headway it has made with young California and the fact that it is the game played by the rival colleges The rules will be materially changed this year so as to prevent so much mass playing and will give the individual player more chance to distinguish himself The president of the San Francisco Lacrosse Club is in Los Angeles and as soon as arrangements for an intercity match are completed the Canadian pastime will boom in this city as lacrosse is a very exciting and highly interesting game especially to the spectator The little practice indulged in by the local clubs has served to show that there are a num ber tf good players in this city and a match with Los Angeles will cause a whole lot of interest as the southern team is reported to be a very formidable one THE MELD SP0BTS ate snme time during Mar The brook trout spawn sent him from Michigan has hatched out finely and he has 20000 little specimens of the salvelinns fontinalis not over one half inch in length in a perfectly healthy condition which will eventually be distributed in small quantities in the various waters of the State Drillers for oil in the sixties above and about Oil City Pa found fissures in the rock through which flowed living streams and from which eyeless fish came up with the sand pump A curious fish is found in foreign waters that lights a certain portion of thedark ness surrounding it as does the firefly on a summer evening Deformed fish are by no means a rarity in the hatcheries of fish cultunsts Double headed trout and salmon jointed like the late Siamese twins and others with dis torted spinal columns are oy no means rare but they invariably die when the umbilical sac is absorbed and the claims of a hungry stomach inaugurate the problem of feeding But it is very notable to find adult fish in any dumber deformed in the same wav Wabau ttond in Welleslv Me affords pickerel with a distinct bunch just anterior to the ventral and dorsal fins ana tne vertebra snows on attention to this curious fact He says I have occasionally seen an individual so bent and distorted that he could not swim a yard in a straight line and I once caught a fine fish iu my hand that was vainly endeavoring to dodge me as I rowed along in my boat in shallow water The origin of the deformity and its persistence are facts difficult to account for except on the theory of trans mitted impenectton in a smau iaae InvemessMre Scotland there are to be found verv peculiarly deformed trout Their heads are short and round and their iaws are truncated like those of a bulldog erch eels and trout have been taken from the TJyn Cwm of Wales with only one eye the right Trout with a distortion of the spinal column are also found in the same lake and Jonathan Couch in British Fishes says he obtained specimens of hump backed trout in Calden in Cumberland Yarrel also speaks of trout having two heads ana two tails OUR CYCLE GHMIPIONS Chicago under the auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union of America It is a little early to venture prognostications on many of the proposed tests of skill as the personnel of the teams likely to invade the country is not yet known San Francisco will in all in that city from the 7th to 10th of June Peter eon will shortly issue a challenge to row any mauf or the championship of America Shrewd and well posted men on aquatic affairs hold the opinion that Peterson can easily defeat such men as Hanlan Gau daur and Teemer all of whom have seen their best day Peterson is 29 years old and is a native of California He has won a number oj good races and only of the kind in the West has issued a programme for its eighth annual field day which is to be held at the Athletic park Los Angeles on Tuesday May 80th There are fourteen events on the programme and America Ithasbeensaida thousand times that it is not all of fishing to fish and the taking of a few trout is perhaps the least part of the pleasure to the angler but after all it is the fish that gives him his excuse for his outing and its attendant delights and if it were not for that he would still be plodding along in the daily routine of business The murky waters of our creeks and rfvers have subsided to the great joy of the followers of Izaak Walton It is how ever only to the expert angler that this fact has its true meaning Trout fishing has been only fair during the past week The true sportsman loves to fish with gossamer line light dainty rod and feathered fly but at present the greatest success will be obtained with bait There is a reason for this The trout needs the warm spring sunshine to liven him up He knows that fly time has not arrived yet and is suspicious Of the imitation never mind how cleverly cast The kind of bait used is of the utmost importance Shrimps and angle worms are the most killing A common earth worm transfixed by the hook in such a way that portions are left to wriggle in a somewhat natural manner is the most alluring Under certain conditions the shrimp proves a very attractive bait To insure satisfactory results with the shrimp the day should be dark and windy Either of these baits will find a fish in a stream that might be whipped with a fly for hours without success Yet the true angler will not use any kind of bait not ey en salmon roe until every fly in nis book has been tried and found wanting There is a delightful pleasure in the casting ol a fly that only the initiated can appreciate but with it all the knowledge of how to fish must be one of the possessions of the fellow at the shore end of the pole or he will make a flat failure of it and wonder how the other fellows can call it Sport Fishing up stream requires expert angling It is hard to distinguish the difference between the biting of a Ssh and the catching of the hook on a rock as itfloats down and it is harder still to recover the hook for a new cast Fishing down stream is much easier The aneler should when possible face the sun otherwise long before iis flr has reached the water his shadow will have frightened away the fish The best success of late has been obtained at Point Reyes Glen uEllen Pnris Bima creek San Oregorio Boulder creek and Lake Lagunitas George Walker caught ninety fine trout at Glen Ellen on Sunday las DrNeil seventy at Lake Lagunitas and Baums forty nine averaging a quarter of a pound each at the same place Same very large ones have been taught on the Truckee near Boca At Lake Lagunitas gray flies black Palmer and dark flies have proved the best At San Gregorio and Boulder creeks the royal coachman and brown hackle with ailver body have proyed the most killing The Fish Commission have been doing some good work of late among the illegal fishermen During a recent cruise of the launch Hustler the deputies arrested seven fishermen for fishing on Sunday and for fishing with sturgeon lines Six of the seven were convicted and fined from 15 to S50 each One Italian and a Chinaman were arrested on Tuesday last for selling stnpea bass minis cityunaer the prescribed limit of three pounds weight Theybota pleaded gouty ana were fined S5 each The Fish Commissions all over the United States were unusually active the Comment whoever may be brought here for a like purpose lo man can be a specialist in all classes Probably the class that created the most interest among the visitors was the noble St Bernards Los Angeles never saw such a class before Two years ago there was one genuine St Bernard shown Last year there were two Republican and Grand Chancellor this year eleven and the class was fully equal in quality to Englands greatest greyhound the winner of thousands of pounds sterling has been returned to the kennels of Colonel North The dispatches received by the press were very meagre stating only the bare fact that he had been found The dog ran away from the kennels and wanaerea about tne conntryy being acaea and cuffed from door to door The man who caught him was a rural postman named Richards He Was needless to add that the dog went home in a cab AMONQ THE GtTCOTEN Quail Are Becoming Scarce In Some localities The Mongolian pheasant is making rapid headway in this State Private parties are purchasing them in Oregon and Washington and turning them out on their ranches The wisdom of this intro duction is very questionable Oregon had but few quail and the introduction of the Chinese pheasant has given them a game bird that has multiplied rapidly and provides good sport With us it is different California has an abundance of the queen Of all game birds the quaiL The question is How long will we have them after the pheasants begin to breeds It is reported on good authority that the Chinese pheasant will drive every quail out of its immediate neighborhood They are very pugnacious In Oregon they have been known to enter the barnyard and whip the gamiest of game roosters In some localities in California where quail were plentiful last year they are reported as becoming quite scarce and the pheasants were only turned out a little over a year ago The Fish Commission should investigate this matter and it these reports prove correct Chinese immigration from Oregon should be
