a spirited argument before tne jolat session of the Fire and Buildings and Judiciary committees of the Board or Supervisors Friday when the proposed revision of the lire ordinance was taken under consideration The argument was between the asphaltum roofers and the tin terra cotta slate and tile men In the proposed ordinance section 102 under the captloa of Boot Coverings roads as follows The roofs of all buildings hereafter erected within the city and county of San Francisco shall be covered with either metal tile terra cotta slate or asphaltum if asphaltum to be laid over felt and covered with at least three quarters of an inch of gravel screened through a five eighths inch mesh and the asbestos to be used to weigh net less than fourteen pounds to 100 square feet and gravel roofs shall not have a pitch of more than two inches to the foot It was this section that caused the argument It was claimed that It cut the shingle men out entirely even outside the fire limits It was also alleged that the reduction of the weight of the sheet of asbestos from thirty two pounds the present standard to fourteen pounds would no cheapen the cost of asphaltum roofs that the other roofers could not compete further that the present thickness of the asbestos one sixteenth of an Inch was hurdly adequate and to reduce It to one thirty second would afford no protection at all The asphaltum men held that It was little or no protection anyway and might as well be done away with altogether William Mooser Jr City Architect Informed the committees that the omission Of the shingle men wss an Inadvertence on his part and should be corrected As to the reduction of the weight of asbestos It had been put at fourteen pounds through an error in presuming that it was about the weight of the present specification Samuel Irving in speaking for the asphaltum men said the asbestos sheeting as fixed by the ordinance now in force was entirely too expensive and was placed in the ordinance only through an unscrupulous Board of Supervisors about four ears ago I McCarthy represented the Building Trades and insisted that the asbestos covering be retained to at least Its present standard The matter went over for one week for further hearing THINKS HE WAS BUNKOED Dissatisfied Employe Causes Arrest of Book Agent Hughes The trial of Edgar Hughes who was art est sd Thursday on the complaint of William White a striking machinist will White says disclose a fraudulent transaction In which the defendant has been engaged According to Whites statement he was induced to pay Hughes 25 for a comparatively worthless book outfit While waiting for the strike to end he applied to Hughes in response to an advertisement He was to be employed as a canvasser but before he could begin business he was required to deposit J20 to Insure the return of the outfit Unon th payment of the money he had to sign a contract with many conditions the breach of any one of which would invalidate the whole transaction White found that he had undertaken an uphill task as the demand for his books was small and after returning the outfit demanded the return of his money Hughes explained that the deposit had been forwarded to his employers 8 A Knapp Co of Kansas City to whom he would have to apply White does not be Ueve that there is any such firm In existence and therefore caused the arrest
