If the Red Raiders can just equal their best performances, he'll be happy. That's because with eight qualifying spots, they have three more than any other team in the Class field. And with six of those qualifying efforts being among the top four in their respective events, Allmann thinks the Red Raiders, who finished third at last year's meet, may have enough to challenge for the title. "I think we're going to be competitive," Allmann said.

"It's a whole different thing at State, but if everybody can equal their best efforts of the year, then we've got a good chance." Overall, the Marawood Conference has seven entrants with the top qualifying efforts in the boys competition, including Marathon's Chad Stelzl in the shot put (55-0) and Perry Vetter in the 110-high hurdles Pittsville boasts Matt Hanutke in the pole vault (13-0) and Ed Twinn in the long jump (224). Stratford has John Schmidt in the high jump (6-5) and Prentice has Kevin Collins in the Greg Laura Schraufnagel Belanger Raiders should know early if they have a good shot at the title. "That's going to be a major key," Allmann said. "If we don't look good coming out of Friday, it's going to be an uphill struggle. The mile relay is the last event and it could come down to that." Completing Pittsville's qualifiers, Chad Lilly ranks second in the triple jump (44-2), 100-dash and 200-dash Bill Granger of Clear Lake has the best triple jump (44-4), Chad Wilkinson of Shiocton the top 100 time (:11.0) and Ryan Lord of Ithaca the best 200 clocking (:22.2).

Rasmussen (5-2) yielded six hits in seven innings and Greg Harris pitched two perfect innings for his third save. The Braves scored in the second when Dave Justice singled and Jeff Blauser doubled. Astros 5, Giants 3 Bill Doran's second RBI-single snapped a 2-2 tie and Craig Biggio added a two-run single in a four-run sixth inning.

Former Milwaukee Brewer Ernest Riles homered off Darwin in the ninth. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, the Astros' rally began when Giants' third baseman Matt Williams dropped Ken Caminiti's pop fly near the mound. Mark Thurmond relieved and gave up the singles to Doran and Biggio.

But two pitches later, A's manager Tony LaRussa emerged and pointed to the scoreboard, which had the count at 3-2. Reilly then signaled a 2-2 count and Wathan came at him. A few minutes later, Wathan had his third ejection in three seasons. Dennis Eckersley pitched one and one-third innings for his 15th save in -3 The Associated Press In a game that had just about everything, hardly anything went right for the Kansas City Royals. "Enough of the weirdness didn't go our way," Kansas City outfielder Jim Eisenreich said after a 6-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics in one of two AL games Thursday night.

American League The first of a four-game series between the Royals and Oakland A's included balks, an inside-the-park home run and plenty of controversy. Rickey Henderson, the American League's all-time stolen base king, had a home run as well as a stolen base. Mark McGwire, with a sore leg, drove in four runs on a double, a single and a bases-loaded walk. And Royals' manager John Wa-than was ejected in the eighth inning as the A's held on for a victory that boosted their West Division lead to three games over second-place Chicago and 12 over next-to-last Kansas City. The victory also snapped a five-game winning streak the Royals had nurtured coming into a big series for them.

The A's put 11 runners on base in the first four innings and took a 4-0 lead on an RBI-double by McGwire, a fielder's choice and McGwire's two-run single. Henderson's eighth home run gave the A's and Bob Welch (7-2) a 54 lead over Tom Gordon (2-3) in the sixth. Then, after the Royals scored three in the bottom of the sixth, including Bo Jackson's two-run inside-the-park homer, things got frantic in the eighth. The A's loaded the bases on an error by third baseman Kevin Seitz-er, a single by Henderson and an intentional walk to Jose Canseco. With two out, McGwire drew a walk, bringing in Oakland's sixth run and triggering an outburst from the Royals' dugout that prompted an angry warning from home-plate umpire Mike Reilly.

The Associated Press Mike Morgan got the Los Angeles Dodgers through eight innings and Kal Daniels homered to end it in the 10th. Such was the late-inning progression for the Dodgers, who beat the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1, Thursday night to open a four-game series between the National League West Division rivals. The Dodgers remained in a virtual second-place tie with San Diego in the West, eight games behind the first-place Reds. "This is a big series for us," said Daniels, who was traded from the Reds to the Dodgers last season. "We know what we have to do.

It's a bigger series for us than it is for them because they're in first and they're eight games up, so hopefully we can win as many as possible." Daniels hit his ninth homer of the season leading off the bottom of the 10th, on a 1-1 pitch from reliever Norm Charlton (3-1). The setback was the first for the Reds' "Nasty Boys" bullpen crew of Randy Myers, Rob Dibble and Charlton. They are a combined 7-1. It was only the Reds' sixth loss in 23 road games. The victory went to Don Aase (2-1), who allowed one hit in two innings in relief of Morgan.

Morgan allowed six singles in eight innings. Padres 2, Braves 1 Pinch-hitter Fred Lynn singled off the right-field fence to drive in the second of two seventh-inning runs as San Diego rallied for its fourth consecutive victory. Loser Pete Smith (4-4) walked Mike Pagliarulo to start the seventh. Pagliarulo went to third on Phil Flipping OUt: Kansas City's Bo Jackson does the park home run in the sixth inning against Oak-a flip at home plate after hitting a two-run, inside- land Thursday. Then, with George Brett on first in the bottom of the eighth and Jackson at bat, things got even stranger.

All in one motion, Jackson grounded to third baseman Carney Lansford and umpire Steve Palermo signaled a balk against reliever Rick Honeycutt. Jackson ran to first as Lansford threw to first. And as everybody stood around in momentary confusion, Wathan ran out for what would be his loudest, but not his last argu gh Timbers' rally isn't enou The addition of Asencio and Mercedes brings to seven the number of Timbers from the Dominican Republic. 'I wjjf WIAA STATE HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TOURNAMENT By Susan Pekar Wausau Daily Herald For the second night in a row the Wausau Timbers staged a ninth-inning rally, but it was a case of too little, too late Thursday, as the Kenosha Twins beat them, 4-1. The Timbers entered the final inning trailing 4-0. With two outs, Kenosha's Alan Newman, who held Wausau to only two hits and two baserunners in eight innings, walked Christian Benitez and Brad Hildreth. T.R.

Lewis, whose two-run home run Wednesday lifted the Timbers to victory, hit an RBI-single to center that put Wausau on the scoreboard. With two outs and two men on, Mel Wearing stepped up to the plate. Unfortunately that was where the rally ended, as Wearing struck out on three pitches. "That ninth inning was a great compliment to our ballclub," Timbers' manager Mike Young said. "I've been very pleased with our performance in those types of situations.

I was very happy with both T.R.'s and Mel's at bats. Mel did just what he had to do, which is swing the bat. He was aggressive In there and that's great. In this case the pitcher won out, but I think in most cases Mel would win." Newman, who has the fifth-lowest ERA in the Midwest League at 1.64, retired the Timbers in order seven times. "That was the best-pitched game we've had In the first Hildreth lined a single to left, but was caught in a double play that ended the inning.

In the fifth, Wearing led off with a walk, but was picked off trying to steal second base. Wearing, at 6-3, 240 pounds, is l-for-4 in stolen-base attempts this year. "Mel runs pretty good for a guy his size," Young said. "It wasn't a real good pitch to run on." The Twins scored all of their runs on a pair of home runs by Marty Cordova and Randy Gentile. Cordova hit a two-run shot over the right-field wall in the fourth inning, and in the seventh, Gentile hit a high fly ball that got a boost to clear the left-field wall.

"That second home run was just a fly ball that the wind took Young said. "That kind of thing happens in a park this size." Kenosha manager Steve Liddle said that Newman's pitching was one of the biggest factors in the Twins avenging their 6-4 loss Wednesday night. "Newman did an outstanding job," Liddle said. "He's thrown well for us all year. He's one of our regular starters, and I think he's one of the best pitching prospects in the league." Notebook Timbers' infielder Keith Kessinger has been promoted to the Orioles' Class A team in Frederick, a member of the Carolina League, while pitcher Tom Martin has been placed on the disabled list.

Two new names can also be found on the Wausau roster.
