district Adams replied that there were There was one Democratic ballot numbered 103 two Republican ballots numbered 4 and 163 and a Union Labor paster on a Democratic ballot making four in all Adams said that he did not know whether these ballots had been In the ballot box or not As they were numbered according to his testimony they evidently had been voted as It is the practice to number the methods of regular railroad agents with regard to Knight Templar excursion tickets were In question yesterday In Judge Muraskys court A RIgdon a ticket broker has been cited for contempt for an alleged violation of the injunction prohibiting the local scalpers from dealing In these special excursion tickets and as part Of his defense his attorney Samuel Shortridge has Introduced evidence as to the acts of the railroad companies John Weber testified yesterday that he went to the Chicago and Northwestern office In Chicago in last August and spoke to the agent about getting tickets to San Francisco for himself his wife and son He was willing to wait until September when single way tickets to San Francisco were to be procurable at the cut rate of 33 but the agent advised him to buy Knight Templar tickets at 50 each telling him that he could sell the return portion of each ticket here for 15 or 20 and that he would thus for about the same outlay arrive here In time for all of the conclave es i tlvlties Weber did as advised and at the agents suggestion wrote his name as Web on his ticket abbreviating his signature so that It might be more easily imitated when scalped and sold again The specifications on each ticket call for the signing thereon by the original purchaser of his or her name but Weber testified that neither his wife nor son went to the agents office and that he wrote their abbreviated names On reaching here he found that he could not dispose of the return portions of the tickets because of the injunction He came over the Union Pacific and Central Pacific lines Rudolph Holzhausen testified that he paid 47 50 for a Knight Templar round trip ticket at the Burlington and Quincy office In St Louis In August He had proposed to get a oneway ticket but the agent talked him into taking the other and advised him to buy one calling for a return trip via Los Angeles as he could more easily sell the return portion here The agent knew Holzhausens name but told him that it did not matter what name he put on the ticket and Holzhausen shortened his signature to Holz Finding that he could not bell the return portion of his ticket here Holzhausen concluded to return East and he went to the joint agency of the companies on New Montgomery street to have it validated He experienced considerable difficulty in convincing the validation agent that he was the original purchaser and whin this fact was admitted the agent refused to validate the ticket because he believed that Holzhausen Intended to sell It He stamped It so that Holzhausen could not use it and offered to place Holzhausen on board a train putting the ticket in the conductors hands and give him transportation to St Louis Holzhausen refused this offer explaining that he objected to being shipped like freight and that he did not need a guardian Beyrelss the validation ageht admitted that Holzhausens account of what took place at his office waa correct Judge Murasky said that he would HAT the trouble was that prompted William Lee head wrapper In the City of Paris store to commit suicide yesterday he kept to himself Even in the farewell letter which he penned to the girl he was engaged to marry and to whom he had just presented a jing he gave no inkling of what it was that made life a burden to him She found the note when she went to his room at 780 Folsom street at noon yesterday bearing a bowl of soup for him for he had telephoned to the store that he was 111 and the message had been transmitted to her The instant that she saw his apparently lifeless form stretched on the bed she knew that it was something more than mere illness and summoned the nearest physician It did not take him long to make up his mind that the case was one for the Central Emergency Hospital and there Lee was sent while the girl Mildred de Martini of 903 Union street followed the ambulance clutching the letter tightly At the hospital WhilejShe kept her lonely vigil of hours outside the room where the surgeons were trying to save the life of Lee she read and reread the ietter without discovering a clew in it to tell her what had been wrong He wrote In part as follows am going to1 make a trip Into the great unknown I am up against it Borne persons say that the man who kills himself Is ihsane but I am in my full senses and the last thing I shall see before they leave
