here to night Senator Fair banks discussed the trust question the substance of his remarks being as follows Trusts may be strong but the Government is stronger Threis no combination which is hot ajnenable to he public Jaw The de ireiopment of our industries and the expansion of our commerce have made combinations of capital neces sary It would be impossible to transact the present business of the country without the use of larger capital in manufacture and trails portatlon than was necessary a few Jrearsago The voiutjon jn our business affairs has been rapid and radical and lt has been attended with some abuses which have called foe the in ferpositioir bi law The Republican party has sought in a wise and effective way to restrain the abuses whloh have grown out of the development It has not made Wat upon enterprises engaged In wholesome industry or commerce It has not been provoked to strike out against good and bad with like impartiality but has sought to ascertain the evils existing that are liable to arise and to enact laws to cure or prevent them It has done practically all that has been accomplished under national au thdrtty in a way not only to restrain or to prevenj abuses of corporate poweTj but it has effectively enforced the laws which were enacted by It fearlessly and without partiality Whenever laws have been deemed necessary in the public interest the Republican party has put them upon the statute books and it has executed them as they were intended and as the public Interest required It has not sought nor doesit seek to Jnterfere with capital through train service to Chicago will be restored on Wednes day Delayed trains and a vast amount of mail matter long overdue is arriving in Los Angeles by way of both the northern and southern routes At present Santa Fe trains are being sent East by way of the Southern Pacific to Demingr Ns and thence north over the Santa Fes EI Paso line and also by way of the El Paso and Southwestern road have been ruined py hundreds of tons Many growers have not picked any of their crops which will be a total loss Other large vineyardists have only gathered a small percentage of their grapes The loss will amount to thousands of dollars Hundreds of acres of grapes will be permitted to remain on the Vines as they are not worth picking The grapes would be in part good for distilling but for wine they are absolutely useless One grower In the vicinity of Ken Wood had many tons cut and In boxes lying in his vineyard which he had contracted to sell at 16 a ton After the rain had struck them the winery only offered him 4 a ton for them They were hauled to the Winery and sold at this price The rainfall for the present season Is 716 Inches more than three times the amount of last years record The BARN William Nicholls Thought to Have Been Victim of Mexican Thugs at Palmer Ranch BAKERSFIELD October 16 William Nicholls aiv aged pioneer of the mountain section was robbed and murdered at Vaughns barn on the road from Ha vilah to Isabella The robbery occurred Friday night and the old man died some time last night according to advices received by Coroner Mulllns frot Vaughn this morning Two Mexicans employed as wood choppers at the Palmer ranch about a mile from the scene of the murder were arrested by Constable Swett of Kernvllle Saturday ton the charge of robbery before Nicholls died and were brought to the County Jail last night Since Nicholls death the charge will now probably be one of murder Other arrests may follow The dead man was well known throughout the county having Beside His Horse Which Had Perished SAN BERNARDINO October 10 Fred de Counter a mining man Is In a critical condition at Dale from the effects of cyanide fumes haying been found on the desert unconscious while beside him lay his horse dead De Counter had started to carry to the mine at Dale part of a sack of cyanide throwing the sack over his shoulder as he rode along Three hours later he Was found by prospectors his horse haying borne him a number of miles before It was overpowered by the deadly fumes when stumbling It threw De Counter to one side while the contents of the bag were
