going to make strong bid for this event especially the Garden City cyclers who have several very speedy riders entered in this race and as two food novice men Long and Nisson ropped out last Saturday the Garden City cjclers will evidently capture the diamond The work the riders are doing at the track is becoming exceedingly interesting and attracts large crowds there every afternoon The attendance its drawbacks Nevada still has courage to raise and train a few horses The most prominent breeder In tha State is Theodore Winters His place is situated about fifteen miles south of Reno on the edge of Washoe lake in Washoe valley It la a model breeding establishment Mr Winters is the possessor of some 5000 acres of grazing and grain land and owns nearly the entire water right of the valley Since his removal from Califor nia he has made vast improvements in his barns and breeding establishments He has erected a barn with sixty stalls each stall being 20x20 feet and padded with canvas stuffed with excelsior stuffing The floors are filled to the depth of two feet with white sand There is a center court in the barn where winter training can be carried on At Mr Winters place there art twenty six yearlings undergoing the first lesson in race life The most prominent in the bunch is a big fellow by Joe Hooker dam Marion a full brother to To Tara bein and Yo El Rey He is nearer like El Rio Rey in contour and general lines than any of her colts Mr Winters has declined to have any bid made on the horse In fact he is a trifle superstitious on this question When The Czar was in his prime and showing to the world the promise of a world beater Mr Winters refused S20030 for him In ten days the grand youngster contracted a cold and died Later when El Rio Rey was the sensation of the season Mr Winters again refused a fortune and within a few days the horse came down with lung fever It was only after months of nursing that he could be moved to the coast and placed iff the stud He can never face a flag again as ho is a pronounced roarer mere are a numoer oi cons oy itey at the ranch and all bie fine ones His colts resemble himself in size and color They are all big boned and plenty of daylight plays under tnem here is every reason to believe that El Rio Rey will prove him fiotf tatrTtT ft it thanMin his ftlft Uorlolk Mr Winters no has a higher class of mares to breed to and will he more careful in the selection of blood lines Old Marion did not have a foal last year and as she is growing old it may be that she will never brine into the world another Rey If this is the case she deserves a home and good care for the good she has alreadv done Among the promising ual9 LIC1C is vuc Ij tiuiwi vsctixa asy Question a full brother to Penigreen and Bo Bo He is about tne raciest iooxing one in the bunch Another hue youngster is by Hooker dam Laura Winston a full brother to Bronco With such promise Mr Winters should land some of the plums next spring Aiew nines oeow inters nnca are Senator Thompsons stables Here he has laid out a mile track built a string of box stalls and nas all that is necessary to conduct a first class breeding and ti aiding farm Martinett went back to Thompsons place a cripple Hewas fired for a blind splint and at last account was credited with being all right He is now taking stow work on the track at the ranch The Drummer will face the flag as a gelding whennext be starts The Cheviot filly Silver State has Improved in size and is likely to make a good one this winter She always had speed enough but was under size for tne amount oi weignt sne nan to carry Centinella never went back to Nevada as she was disposed of on this side of the mountains Sen wick one of the four that went with Martinett is still a maiden He has been running in the Northern California circuit and as yet has been unplaced Bessie Shannon hag a filly colt following her by El Rio Ref It has the same appearance in size and form that mark the other colts from Rey Bessie Shannons yearlihg by Nee Ban died in a very mysterious way and some of the hands are of the opinion that fool play was used in this case Mr Thompson can not look for much success as he has neglected his line of brood mares With the exception of Bessie Shannon and Gersta by Wildidle he has nothing but cold blood Mr Thompson expects to start at the Glenbrook meeting and to go from there to Ren Key and then to Susan ville and Quincy In the programme the Nevada State fair holds out better conditions and more liberal purses than any small meet Lie on the coast This meeting rives the bang tail contingent more chances for their money than any of the meets in California The purses are divided into three monevs instead of the two that rule in Californias county fairs This always means a chance for get away moifey On the Carson track Lew Alien holds forth with four gallopers His pride and favorite is a two year old by Idle A dam May Blossom by Joe Hooker He is a fine big fellow and shows more of the Wildidle than the Hooker in his makeup A three year old filly by Idle A dam by Condor is a promising one and seems to be able to go the route The other two are short horses by Coftdor and hard to guess Carson seems to be the stronghold for the harness brigade IL Taylor is training six In his list be nas three coming stars Dexter by Dexter Prince should be his shining light This horse has been transformed from a trotter to a pacer and is showing remarkable speed Baring accident he will go into the list this fait John Sullivan by Gibraltar dam nn traced is the makine of a good green torse He is a true pacer and of the same disposition of all the other uids tie win stand severe driving and never flinch from any kind ot punishment Taylors third star this youngster a formidable one for his age He is credited with pacing his first mile in 248 with absolute ease He should be heard from this falL Further down the line Senator WilU iams string is located His promise is a Btamooui colt dam uuiqa a He isfis square gaited a youngster as ever graced the track He has the same easy going way of his sire and in conformation resembles him This Colt
