owlooked byVoettors flashed past the JudesJtand Handpress and Quiz II wese the only iavoritwS to win Lewis piloted two long shots to victory and Minder brought home two horses at tempting prices The afternoon was fine And sunn but the track was stick and uncertain The feature race the one and an eighth mile handicap had five starters Lord Badge was made the opening favorite but None was soon backed into first choice As soon as Holtmanralsed the barrier Minder shot out in the lead With The Fretter The son of Brutus fairly re eled in the going and soon had a commanding lead of half a dozen lengths Lorli Badge under persuasion cut down the lead a little along the back stretch but he was soon all out Nones came up stoutly in the stretch but he had too big a gap to close up and The Fretter won in a common canter It as generallj conceded that The Fretter had a great chance but no one expected him to beat his field in such hollow fashion Slddons did not get going until about a mile of the Journey had been covered but he finished very resolutely and will bear watching in all races ov er a distance of ground The two ear old handicap at seven furlongs also resulted in the defeat of the favorite Gavlota Gold Bell had strong support when the Jennings Stable consisting of Arabo and Elliot was held at 6 and 5 to 1 This seemed a long price in lew of Arabo known predeliction for a heavy track At the start Minder took Arabo out in the lead and he was never headed Gavlota who is not enamored of a sticky track came In second A wild killing was attempted In the first race with the mare Karabel who is here from British Columbia She was 200 to 1 in the betting hlle 60 to 1 and 20 to 1 were obtainable for place and show respectlvelj Six horses fame under the wire noses and heads apart inside the money The Weaver was a false favorite in the second race at seven furlongs Resin who went to 12 to 1 lasted long enough to beat Canejo a nose Quis again re warded backers Frank Farran has the gelding In first class condition and he had no dlflculty in winning from Troy the 23 to 1 chance Lewis brought home The Buffoon the extreme outsider in the last race The old horse won with great yesterday with 500 in his Inside pocket to complete arrangements for the tenpln match between the Eugenes of this city and the Coliseums of Los Angeles but he did not find the persons with whom he has to deal and postponed his work until to day The Coliseums challenged the champion Eugenes for their tltlo with a bU0 side bet but named conditions which were not entirely to the liking of the lo cals In return a counter proposition was maae witn several features mat the Los Angejes contingent does not like one of them being the swelling of the bet to unui Morler says the southerners are wining to spin ne ssiur a ueiween ine two cities but want the last series played there So much the Kuarenes are willlnr to rnnrMn The Coliseums however do not care to play nan oi me can rancisco games on one alley and half on the other and un omciaiiy is stateo inat tnoiLugenes will not budare on this point The matter nf the aide bet may also be hard to settle as th local people are of the opinion that Jbeadway near Xhirttcnth stnet Henry Harris returned from Portland yesterday morning bringing nothing but good news of his succesiful mission in arranging a greater Coast baseball league for next season The information he had to Impart to his business associates was of the most satisfactory nature In ery respect and he brands many of the stories sent out from the north as being the waitings of people who are unwilling to admit defeat Harris do not claim that thVre will be no opposition in Seattle but scouts the Idea of a Pacific North est League club playing conflicting dates in Portland against the new organization as he says he field is so well covered by the Influential people in charge that an opposition club could scarcely hope to do I any tning out lose money from the start 1 looked over the field very carefully before making the move for our league and am satisfied that what I have done Is for the best The men of means I met in both Portland and Seattle are more than desirous for the change or I would not have considered the matter favorably paid Harris last night The men backing the Portland team are not doing anything underhanded in changing from one league to the other They look upon it as a business proposition and nothing more They see more money and better port in view by coming In with us and the towns that are losers by It are naturally a little bit wrought up Dugdale of Seattle was not begged to Join us as the people here have been informed He wa offered a block of stock In the new club wMch he can take or leave as he ses fit There is some cisatisfactlon with his maragement and we did not offir him the whole club That is why he Is talking so harshly He may see the futility of his stand and Join us later rather than tackle a loMng proposition but we care not whether he takes it be cause hav 100 OCO backing in Seattle from the soundest of business men Spokane anted to come in also but we could not handle more than two cities In that section and the Jump over there Is too long and would cost too much money Instead of opposition we met nothing but enthusiasm In our mis sion The people who are rraklng th protests are thoe who may be losers bj the deal and do not represent the majority A date for the Californa League an rual meeting has not been set and th persons interested are reticent on th matter but it will probably be the firs of the week Morley of Los Angeles is already in town and Fisher can come on a couple of hours notice There was a storv afloat last night to the effect that some local people were prepprlnp to acciite themselves with the Pacific Northwest League and put an opposition team in this rlty bat coul not be raced to any rellab fourdatlon TWO BIG UPSETS GREET THE TALENT Favorite in 0pn Stake Shnt day before when they Jumped into the big lot to have a second try at the AH Amertcan stara yesterday afteraoon and their work was painful to the 2000 fans who hoped to see a different result to the struggle Even if Lohmana charges bad simply been beaten it would not have been so bad but they were made to look very cheap At no time during the entire league season did the Suburbanites give any such exhibition of how the game should not be played as in the last two days when stacked up against the real thing Monler the fleet little bagman whose fame has extended beyond the Rockies was the chief offender He could not get himself in hand at all and when he gave way under the strain It was a case of quick curtain with the balance Graham and Mercer were both very wild walking eight men each Mercer Is usually steady as a rock but yesterday he gave a base on balls while the sacks were full and forced a run home Besides this he hit Francks The generosity on the twirlers part put a damper on the game and the few Individual chances for brilliant work kept Interest at a low ebb Oakland again started out very brashly Walters and Mdhler driving out singles Mohler was caught trying to steal but Mercer lost control and walked both McCreedie and Strelb Devereaux came along with a single which scored two and Mercer again lost the location of the plate first hitting Francks and then giving another run by presenting Klelnow with a pass The isitors first was also long and tiresome Jones hit Davis walked and Rltchey scored a run with a single Davis was caught at the plate on Har ley tap to Strelb and the side should have been retired when Cross sent a bounder to Francks but Mohler let the throw get away from him and two more runs counted Errors were mixed up with all the rest of the runs the All Amerirans going around tbe paths until they were tired The score OAKLAND ab bu io a i Walters cf 5120310 Mohler 2b 4010124 Dunleavy If 4000100 McCreedie 4 2 10 0 11 Strelb lb I 1 1 0 ago and long before he mad arrangements to stay with Sacramento another year The desire to have such a thing known might be merely a move to evade the payment of the 1000 fine undeV which Unglaub is laboring At the peace meeetlng when the American Association affiliated with the Minor League Association it was agreed that all playets under suspension or fine or those belonging to certain clubs that had been signed by others prior to the date of peace would be considered in good standing by the association ergo Unglaub must have been signed before that date to be eligible no matter what the real date of the contract It is considerably harder to say which players will be with the Los Angeles Club next year than to natde some of the ones who will not be among thoso present Anderson and Roach will not be behind the bat for a certainty as the management does not care for them Raymer will not be at second bas for personal reasons and Rellly is only a possibility at third Mills will not pitch although Wheeler may return Dillon Toman and possibly Jackson are the only members of tba old club outside of Pitchers Gray and Hall who are likely to answer roll calL Morley expects great
