ahock was its long duration the nolent movements lasting or oyer twenty seconds The earthquake wss felt in many places within about 150 miles or this city Here practically no damage resulted and only a few places in the interior reported tnriing losses from the shocc Professor Holden contributes some in teresting results of his study of the earthquake at Lick Observatory i XS THE CITT A Shaking of Hoaie and a Tidal Vate San Francisco had a rude awakening early yesterday morning An earthquake perhaps as severe aa any experienced here since 1863 acted as call boy and the worthy and unworthy citizens were aroused from peaceful lumber The shock was first felt at 3 12 oclock and the wares chased each other beneath the town like the billows racing op the beach There was but one shock that included an intermitting roll A tidal ware on the bay announced the presence of a seismical disturbance trend the ships were tossed on monster waves as if cast up by giant hands The night was calm and the wares mere ripples on the bay Suddenly a mountain of water arose from the darkness and pressed on toward the citr spend ing its strength on the ships that togged and pulled at their anchors The waves dashed over them and deck furniture was thrown about or wept away With the rushing waters It was a close and sultry morning and the knowing ones presaged a storm from the appearance of the sky Dark clouds ringed with blue dropped near to the earth the moon hovered over the city in pale beauty the city seemed to be quiet in its waiting there was expectancy apparent in the stillness Then a rumbling was heard the earth gave a violent lurch from east to west and continued with con siilerahle velocity to roll lite a ship tossed by strong waves and winds Reports regarding the duration of the disturbance and the time of its commencement are somewhat con fused owing to the excitement of those who gave them There is quite a divergence of opinion as to the number of shocks felt Some claim to hare felt two violent and distinct shocks others aay that there were two of great severity and a third of minor importance Professor oeorgo Davidson assistant in charge of the United estates Coast and Geodetic Survey and an authority on seismic disturbances was seen at his residence and asked the cause of the earthquake I was aroused by the ahock he said and realized at once what was the matter I seized my chronometer struck a match and at once noted the time as being 3 12 30 clock I then counted the seconds to see how long the shock would last As the time went by I became astonished at its deration and violence Ihere was no cessation of the vibrations they came with great frequency and force At the ehd of twenty seconds the earth gave a great and prolonged shiver and then everything became stilL A sat in Deu caving caueu luy wp howas awake at the commencement of the earthquake and discussed it with him The shocks were so violent that I confidently expected to feel another and still greater one and my astonishment was great when after waiting some tome another did not occur There was only one shock though it was made up of heavy vibrations which came from the east to the wet It was the sharpest most eevere earthquake I have experienced since the disastrous onesoi 1808 and 1863 1 have not yet investigated the matter and only know that it shook my house most thoroughly and frightened many In my neighborhood hare expert enced hftv eight earthquakes ana of course am somewhat accustomed to them but this one shock lasting twenty seconds a as a great surprise The sailors on the bay had startling eij enences The yachts Nellie Chis pk White Wings and others of the yacht club were quietly rocking at anchor The water was as calm as a miUpond Suddenly the sailors were appalled to see a huge wave come rushing down upon them Nothing could be done and several waves broke over the decks of the various vessels hatever was loose on the decks was aweut away and only the secure anchorage saved the craft The earthquake was felt in Oakland la all its severity The first shock was followed by a succession of minor pul ssbons and It was the heaviest felt in Oakland for many years Considerable damage was done to bric a brse and clocks which fell from mantel pieces and a large chimney on a house at Do rant and Alice streets was broken down AT XICK OBSKBTATOBT shock inclosed by a stone waD came into his possession at the close of the Modoc war Some small portions of it were formerly owned by Jesse Applegate and his brothers and on some old maps it is still called Applegates How and when the Applegates came in contact with Jesse Carr is not known but it is generally believed that Carr loaned money on mortgages to the original Applegate then took him into his em ploy as Applegate claimed to be a surveyor The surviving Applegates are broken down and penniless One is confined in a Southern Oregon asylum and his only memory relates to Jesse Carr who it is popularly supposed has been the cause of the rem of the once flourishing Applegate family The land which Jesse Carr acquired from the Applegates was however only a few acress in extent but it served as the nucleus for that bold and unlawful acquisition of land to which the attention of the United States Government has now been directed The first step taken by Carr was to have a complete survey made of that territory north of Clear lake to Lost river west from Clear lake to Steel swamp and south to the Alkali flats and the Potholes This having been done Larr who owned here and there through a mortgage some odd 100 acres began to have erected a wall around this immense stretch 01 territory The wall commenced at the northern end of Clear lake ran north to Lost river ran dowith the Modoc war and the Lara Beds The famous Lav Beds are on the west side of Tule lake a dayand a naus nae xrom varre xancn it is separated from CarrVClear lake ranch by three miles ot water several miles of land and a high mountain ridre Can has not a single head of stock there It is not only on dear lake that Carr has without shadow of right and tattle fenced in public land but it is the same on Tule lake Carr has run a fence along that lake from a point known as Bevana to the fence belonging to the ranch of two Scotch boys London and Gibson Be has so built this fence that a poor German who has 10 acres on the borders of Tule lake has been shut off from water From Bevans to the Scotch hoys a distance of over twenty miles there is no outlet to water and the distance would have been longer hadnot James Bevans maintained lanes despite the threaten ings ana tne attacks 01 uarrs nirea men Carr has secured several odd 160 acres here and there by employing cowboys to file homestead desert pre emption and other claims letting them prove it up then buying from them and promptly discharging them He has had an old Irishman take up land for him whose boast has been that he is unot a citizen ot this damnable country and has acquired the land by other illegal modes It has been Cans steady aim to keep settlers out of the county and he has succeeded There are some however who have been bold enough to defy him Can claims land which has notyet been feneed on the western side of Clear lake Two years ago Louisa Boddy one of the survivors of the Modoc masacre filed on the border of Clear lake and built there a cabin Carr has repeatedly sent orders to his men to have her barns and cabin pulled down or burnt and has in various ways tried to drive her off the landT Settlers have come there and have been terrorized by the boys Can has with him Louisa Boddy has a fine hay ranch on the northern end of Tule lake but owing to the way the county has been fenced in by Carr she has to bare her cattle driven a three days drive to the Potholes and there keep them for the summer Cattle that have been driven from their accustomed pastures even though that pasture maybe eaten out will always stray back and this constant driving keeps them poor There is not 5 3bLi TiL 31 33 1 6 I yr Data i 1 T47r ez i 7 5 10 7 8 9 10 II J2 i i Hnj ifiiil3 7 91 ll 30 2 1 I7 It 15 30 Ssk It Jf lb 2S along that stream till it struck Willow creek followed that to the south fork then turned west taking in a number 01 springs avoiding the alkali fiats and then finishing up at the southern end of Clear lake It is estimated that there are at least 40000 acres of land within this wall Jesse 11 Can holds most of this land under most flimsy pretenses and under no shadow of title His ranch house and bares workshop and stables are located about six minutes walk from the shores of Clear lake He has declared that the lands on which his cor rals are located are swamp lands and the same about the land where the main ranch houses are situated In his communication to the Land Office Jesse Carr has said that the surrounding rancheros of the better class are well pleased with this wall as it prevents stock from scattering How well pleased they are can be Judged from the following facts This wall incloses as has already been said nearly 40 000 acres of public bind which by right should afford free pasturage to the stock of everybody raising cattle in those parts and also on Tule lake It has been so built that it incloses every spring every meadow every piece ot swamp land on which grass grows every mountain that furnishes timber or shade trees and every stream and streamlet Outside this wall on the extreme west is a narrow barren strip of country with coarse spur grass Here Jesse Carrs Tule lake fence is met which incloses all the grasslands along that lake and also prevents other stout getting to water Can has so cleverly contnvnd to fence in this county that anybody at tempting to rear stock on rule lase would have the cattle perish of thirst unless they climbed the high ridge be tween Tule lake and Clear lake to get water wnere it is nniencea Having accomplished that journey in order to starve upon tois Darren niusiae they wouia not una purensxen in tne ati tamn The country around Clear lake is un like any other The northern and eastern borders are richly clothed with grass the western and extreme south ern are barren On the northeast of uiear jace runs an immense marsn from which Can cuts a great deal of hay He also cuts bay on the lake borders A great portion of the take border is again inclosed by a fence but the marsh has not as vet been fenced Can employing one or two of his boys to nde around the marsh during the daytime and keep the tattle from off the bay The rest of the 4O000 acres is coveredwith good bunch grass making excellent teed during the summervand plentiiully suppliedjwith springs The stone wall commences on the extreme northern end of Clear lake at that point where the bay lands and the barren county begin At this point Can baa placed a gate which Is how ever Kept tocxea ty means 01 heavy iron chain and a spring lock At about half a mile or three quarters is another Ste similarly locked and which on direct road to Tule late About a mile distant Is another gate Then there la no gate for a good days ride though the wall has a break here and there the break being that the river nas oeen crossed ana the wall buuton the opposite side On the east side are two gates and on the aouth aide one close to the Mowitcb springs where vjarrs one onus are Kept The wail it is estimated cost Can somewhere in the neighborhood of 175004 and also the lives of many Chlnameu the bones of Whose skeletons are still bleaching alongside the and of Mrs Henry lYeibold on Friday night tney were all in the power 01 a mad man one with that most dangerous mission the offering of his fellow man on the sacrificial altar Mr Burns was attorney tor Mrs Weibold in her suit for divorce against her husband Cruelty and ursanity were the allegations The lawyer accompanied by Dr Hadden went to Ag news station the residence of his client where he was destined to spend a night of such terror as few men would have lived through When the visitors reached the house they were informed by Mrs Weibold that her husband was hi one of his dangerous moods and that her life was in danger The insane man had a revolver with which he bad threatened to shootberlfshelefthispresence Even as the woman spokev the lunatic entered the room arid in his hand was the weapon his wife feared sa much He appeared surprised to see two gentlemen there but recovered himself and spoke in a auiet manner asking them Tmw they were air Asums answered mm saying ne hoped they would not disturb him by their presence No you dont said Weibold I expected you I have to kill you and you came to be killed As he spoke he advanced toward the lawyer with the pistol aimed at bis head He seemed terribly in earnest and the story his wife had told and his presence in the room so unnerved Or Hadden that he sank to the floor in a faint Mr Burns knew there was no time or room for expostulation In the matter of strength the madman towered over him like a Hercules Unarmed the lawyer could not cope with Wiebold and even had be had a weapon there was no time to draw it Better hear this story before you kill me said Mr Bums as it getting killed were a matter of such ordinary everyday occurrence that five or ten minutes would not make much differ ence to the parties to the tragedy What is it asked ieboldwatch ing his intended victim closely Burris had no room for a story in his mind when he blurted out the remark His thoughts were filled with consideration of the desperate position he was in But the man question aroused him and with what calmness he could command he began the recital of a funny tale The conditions were not favorable to the happy telling of a humorous story A man is not given to hilarity on the edge of the grave The hearer when ones audience is a madman may fail to see the point or he may have heard the story before and the flash of the pistol in his hand mar light the entertainer through the dark valley As Mr Burns continued Wiebold retreated to a chair and sat down but his eyes fol lowed every movementot the attorney and his revolver never lost the point blank aim at Bums head Embellish the story as he might tell it with what skill for tolling tune he could it had to come to an ena at last cut it was received with commendation Good said the lunatic fine I have heard worse and now I have to am you He again advanced on Burris who saw his arm bend with the tension of his forehnger on the trigger Let me tell you one of my adventures in the Jungle after an elephant remarked Mr Burris quietly I had it printed but it may be new to you Wiebold said he would listen and again took his seat There waa a scene for a painter The lawyer apparently as cool as if his office talking over the trivial matters of the day talking to such purpose and for such an object as had never before called out his power of eloquence It was a plea for life rather a demurrer against the taking ot It and ft was argued for hours The madman sat with his eyes fixed on the speaker quiet impassive earnest beguiled for the moment from the accomplishment of his work but never losing sight of it his cocked revolver firmly grasped in the band that pointed it at his victim head On the floor lay Dr Hadden unconscious of the scene Mrs Weibold had fled go hour after hour passed and Burris passed with the time from place to place now hunting rogue elephants in the jungles of Africa now speanng the walrus in the frozen north narpooning the whale as he slept on the valleys of the waters chasing the bull buffalo across the plains or encountenng the grizzly bear on the mountain side The night passed away the mad mans comments were short Good go on another The morning light shone through the trees now although it war only 8 oclock in the evening when this queer duel of wit against pistol began Story after story was told and Burris was almost exhausted Hebeganonatale he had told before it Mowed naturally and it had its effect Weibold began to nod his eyes closed but opened instantly and were fixed on Burris along the line of the revolver But again he nodded his head sunk down gradually the pistol arm weakened the fingers relaxed their hold and with a bound the lawyer jumped to his side and the weapon was secured Weibold did not stir and Hadden who had recovered consciousness but dared not cause a sound arose to his feet and heipd bis friend to the open air who now that the agony was over seemed on the point of fainting They walked to the insane aijlum only a short distance away and reported Weibold condition to the authorities who secured the mad a striking illustration of the ignorance of the numofefclasses residing in 1 Mexican rural towns One day says Fuenies Maria Orila white wandering about in the mountains met a laborer upon whom aacspah immediately tne man was taken with gripes which waa alarmed and took every means to liberate my family from the strange influences which had been cast orer it The Ajusco witch declared that she was the cause of the childs death and would cause the death of more members of my family if I did not pay her tribute I then notified the Ajusco authorities The Justice of the Peace told me not to hare anything to do with the old hag In a short time another of my neighbors thought as I did that it waa the work of the witch bhe threatened to kill more I took every method to keep out ot her way boon after the death of my last child a child of my compadre died and the old bag met me on the street and again told me that if 1 did not pay her tribute she would cause the death of all ot them Whereupon Fuentes became angry and beat the old woman to and a young man named illard It continued for a while and promised to end in marriage but Mr illiard change of residence to Los Angeles nearly ended the connection Bat Mr btevens and his sister foi lowed Willard to Los Angeles and Alice then became Mrs Willard It was not long till the demon of discord began to playhavoe with the members of this family Mr Stevens and his sister were alienated from their father by family complications and the complications thickened by proceedings in the divorce court for the severance of the marriage ties ot Mr and Mrs Martin Stevens Mrs Marfan Stevens ceased to be the wife of the lawyer and set up again with her sister Miss Bir die Pnce as a dressmaker Hyde street She lived subsequently in Clay and Polk streets until a few weeks ago when she left the aty to proceed to Philadelphia By some it has been inferred that the lady who committed suicide was Mrs Marfan Stevens but this is not probable Miss Birdie Price who is at present residing In Oakland has had word from her sister since she reached Kansas on her road East and her name is Florence and not Alice Mr Willard the husband of Alice seemed touched with the same itch for divorce as his brother in law Mr Stevens He instituted proceedings in that direction and Alice Stevens was again a free woman Her father was to her a stranger her brother had his own business to attend to and his own domestic troubles and the man that had taken her to the altar and had plighted his faith and his manhood to her had cast her off Perhaps he was Justified perhaps not The poor wretched woman had to again face her typewriter hard work poverty and perhaps the bitter taunts of old acquaintances or else she had to make ends meet by means not good or honorable The struggle seems to have been too much for her and she sought relief in a suicides grave Marfan 8tevensleft the city for Butte yesterday afternoon STABBED BY HOODLUH9 A SULTRY DAY Effects of the Heat Seen at the Parle CLIFF B017SE
