Robert Collyer, late of Chioago, was introduced to his new nock, at the Church of the Messiah, in this city, without formality yesterday, mlached a very interestiug sermon from the text "I was when they said unto me let us go into the house ofthe Xord." His direct subject was Why need I go to church," and he treated it in a plain, practical manner, that engaged the closest attention and, seemed totcaxry conviction.

The peroration may be quoted as an example of his method Shall I not confess that this text was among the last words said to the dear friends I haveTeft, and it was borne in upon me that it must be the first I should say to you. I have no room for complaint about a wide and most gra cious hearing in the city I have left, but my twenty years has verified a word lately said by Dr. Bellows, which has gone the rounds of our Western papers, that so far as his observation goes, those who desert the sanctuary and its services soon or late come to grief. So I have come to you with great longing in my heart to stand with all my brethren, of every name, in the urgent plea they make for the presence of all who feel there may be help for them in the house of the Lord nay, of those who do not feel this assurance, but would fain help others. Are you borne down by the burden of your siul There is help for you in the house of the Lord.

Do you think you can do better alone I doubt that, but if I was sure of it I would still say, Who are you that you should do this thing "when you can help so many who cannot go alone and help us to help them is God to be worshiped in the woods Surely, but the most holy place is that which has been snade; holy by the mighty cry of human hearts after God in their sore trouble, when the Christ is forever incarnate in the Christian heart and life, when we can find the angels in human guise, and in it all and through.it all worship the eternal, immortal, invisible, whom no man hath Been or can see. God over all, blessed forevermore, and say with our whole heart as "the good sweet day comes round, 'I was glad when they unto me let us go into the house of the i Unitarianism has not a very strong hold here, but the denomination makes up somewhat for its lack of numerical strength in the wealth, social influence and general high character of its members. With two such eminent divines as Henry IW; Bellows and Mr. Collyer for its metropolitan beacon' lights, it is in no danger of being hid under a bush el, and ought to assume fresh dignity i and importance. The Church of the Messiah is one of the most cheerful and attractive ecclesiastical edifices in the city.

It was built for Rev. Samuel' Os good, than whom there could be no i greater stickler for the resthetio in reli S' on. There" cannot be any happiness without health. Still we go to work in many ways to sys tematically break down health. Send ing children early to school is one of the most effective of these methods. It is savagery coming to thesur face. inere is this to be said about such strictures. The mass of the people who are interested in athletic sports patronize them simply as they would a horse race or a theatift for amusement. They ean iiub greatiy elevated qy sucn an in ui uon as tne wane tor tne Astley belt; but neither are they perceptibly brutal, ized thereby. Temperance temperance in bjoW week is to clapse before the beginning of another six days' pedestrian match, we shall see what the temper of the people is.

The probabilities are that the struggle for the CLeary belt will be comparatively tame. It is set down to begin at 1 o'clock in the morning of this day week. The CLeary belt i8 a massive and elegant affair. It is composed of fifteen chains, thirty six inches long, holding six medallions. The central plate is eight inches long and six wide. "CyLeary" in diamonds surmounts it. Beneath the name is the inscription, "Championship of America, Six days go as you Below this are the national colors of England, France, Ireland and America on a ground of blue enamel.

In the centre is a gold figure representing Mr. CLeary walking, under this are an American eagle on a laurel branch and the motto, Strength and Endurance." Eight solitaire diamonds, in stars, surround the shield. The medallions on either side have gold figures of pedestrians, trotting and run rung respectively. The plates aret all bordered with thistles, ferns, oaks, acorns and ivy. The belt weighs nine pounds, including about One nundred pennyweights of gold.

The staple material is frosted sterling silver, and jthe value $800. 1 Father Hennessey," one of the oldest pastors in Jersey City, made quite a sensation over there yesterday by taking a stand that clergymen of all denominations might possibly do worse than to imitate. The funeral services of the aged mother of an ex freeholder of the city were to be held at his church. When the cortege arrived he closed the gates and refused to allow the body to be brought in, because of the large number of carriages. It seems the orders of the Bishop were that not more than twelve carriages should accompany a body to the church, and the good Father expressed his determination to obev and enforce them, no matter what others might do.

Finally, all but ten of the coaches were sent from the neighborhood and the funeral was allowed to When the procession to the ceme tery was out of sight of the churchy the csutiukw uiaii uau ueen aenii away joiintHi it. Father Hennessey referred to the matter in his sermon, last He said the large number of coaches common at funerals were only for display. and frequently many Of them were not paid for. I see that Maurice Gran has found it prudent to give a few more performances of La Penchole," and postpone the revival ef Ghfle Girofla" at the Fifth Avenue Theatre, until Thursday. The fact is his new opera boufle singers have splendid opportunities to show their mettle in the delicious and perennial "Perichole." To my mind. Paola Ma rie's La 1'erichole is superior to her Clai rette, or it may be that the restraint and nervousness incident to a first appearance among strangers have orn oil' and so enabled her to do fuller justice to her magnificent abilities. At any rate the characterization is wonderfully witching and ana at tne same time sensitive and artistic. 1 can only com pare it with that of Paola's sister Irma.
