BECOBDS OP TEE COIMEECIAL YEAS. What we have Gained and What we have' Lost 1 PROSPEGYS OF THE FUTURE. The "record of the commercial year just drawing to a close is one rtnne and disaster, though the re suits, tinder all the circumstances, ara decidedly favorable. The dreadful visitation of yellow fever last sum, mer, which caused so much, fiufferiag and loss of life, paralyzed 'comsierce for months, and exhausted 'much of the substance of the people. In these days of steam and electricity traffic cannot stop.

When the wheels of our commerce were stayed by the pestilence competitors stepped in and bore away the traffic. For this reason there has been a considerable loss of business, but the operations of the winter were on a liberal scale, the deficiency being to some extent recovered, and the figures are really i more encouraging man we nau a right to expect. We may fairly say that, the ex perience of the year has demonstrated the commercial strength of New Or leans, and her ability to withstand competition under the most unfavora ble circumstances. The wonderful recuperative power of the metropolis is established by "recent events, and there is stronger confidence in the future of the city to day than at any time since the war and this opinion is not only entertained by our own business men but by capitalists abroad. The steady deepening of the water at the Mouth of the Mississippi has enlarged the shipping facilities, and given our port such decided ad van tages as to immediately attract the attention of 6hip' owners.

Two new lines of "steamers have been added in the foreign trade, and an' additional line will probably be put on this winter, designed to make a specialty of the cattle export trade, which is likely to become a prominent feature in our business. The progregs of the railway towards Texas is further evidence of the confidence of capital. The Mor gjfn New Orleans and Texas Roadla now about completed to New Iberia, i and will reach Vermilionvllle by December, where it will connect with the Louisiana Western, to be finished about .1 the same time, giving a through line to Houston. The Ifew Orleans Pacific Railroad, which ia nearly all graded, and which brings ns in rail connection' with the Red River Valley, has secured the aid of capitalists, and will be soon pushed to completion. Inthe cotfon trade we, have fallen behind last year some 200,000 bales ia net receipts, due to the epidemic, and the low stage of the tributaries during the entire season, together with a reduced yield in the bottoms of the Mississippi.

Prices for the great staple have also been lower than any time since the war, thus largely curtailing the" purchasing power of our customers. value of oreign; ex pcjtg 'tsa Isa tKto.
