For some people, luck comes in mysterious forms. Marine Cpl. Trevor C. Deem II, 23, made it through 14 months and 210 combat missions in Vietnam without a scratch. He was sole survivor of a helicopter crash, thrown clear with little more than a few bruises.

Then came Spain. Deem is in a hospital with a fractured hip, mashed leg and broken arm thanks to a donkey. As his father explained it, Deem was in his brand new car driving from Madrid when he swerved to avoid hitting a donkey near the Spanish town of Rota.
