Game not on TV Broncos to host Colts in opener Three-year veteran quarterback John Hufnagel will be the starting quarterback Saturday night when the Denver Broncos open their 1975 preseason schedule against the Baltimore Colts at Mile High Stadium. The Broncos' 15-year veteran quarterback Charley Johnson is still listed as the number one signal caller on the team, but John Ralitcr is trying to find a good backup nan for Johnson. Kalston saia prior to the season that if Johnson became injured this year, the Broncos would start building a program around the number two quarterback. Currently Hufnagel and six-year veteran Steve Ramsey are in contention for the number two position, which could easily become the number one spot, if the aging Johnson is injured or doesn't have a good year. Ralston said from the Broncos' camp in Pomona, Calif, that Hufnagel will play most of the game and could go the distance, if he has a good game.

"We're going to play it by ear," Ralston said, "if Huf- nagel gets off to a good start Saturday we'd be inclined to give him a good share, if not all of the game." All-pro halfback Otis Armstrong will not start in the offensive backfield, as he is still recovering from a pulled hamstring muscle. Armstrong has returned to full gear in the two-a-day workouts in Pomona, but still won't start against Baltimore. Former all-pro Floyd Little will be a starter in the backfield with three-year pro Oliver Ross. Little has announced that this is his final year in professional football and he has predicted it will be his best. Little is the all-time rushing leader in Bronco history.

Ross is a different story. Ross is under tremendous pressure to perform in the preseason because of his many blunders last year with the Broncos. Ross made two key mistakes last year against Kansas City on Monday Night football that helped Kansas City embarrass Denver on national television. Ralston said earlier in the year that if Ross doesn't play to his capabilities that he will not make tiie Denver team this season. The offensive line will be intact except for starting guard Paul Howard, who is being troubled with a knee bruise.

LaFrancis Arnold, who is only Broncos trade Billy Masters DENVER (AP) The Denver Broncos of the National Football League traded veteran tight end Billy Masters to the Kansas City Chiefs Wednesday, the club announced. The trade was for "past and future considerations," the Broncos announced. The Broncos spokesman gave no explanation of what the trade encompassed. Masters is entering his ninth pro football season, joining the Broncos in 1970 in a trade with Kansas City. Masters is 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds.

He has 127 career pass receptions. in his second year from Oregon, will start at guard. Joining Arnold at guard will be Tom Lyons. Lyons, only 6-2, 230 pounds, is known around the National Football League for his superior blocking technique. Denver's dependable center Bobby Maples will take a starting nod and recent acquisition Phil Olsen should also see action at center.

Second-year man Claudie Minor and Mike Currant will start at guard and big Marv Montgomery will also see a lot of action. The starting tight end will be all-pro Riley Odoms, but Ralston will have to get a look at reserves Boyd Brown, Billy Masters and Dave Grannel. Denver could be introducing the greatest defense since the Rich Jackson era Saturday night against the Colts. The best news is that all-pro Paul Smith will return to bolster the defensive line. Lyle Alzado has moved to tackle, and Barney Chavous and John Grant will open at the defensive ends.

The move changing Alzado to the inside could give the five- year veteran a chance for his best season. Alzado relies on his superior strength and he is well- suited for the physical inside game. The Broncos also have to test Smith to find out if his leg is going to hold up in a game situation. Smith was one of the premiere defensive linemen in the NFL before he seriously injured his Achilles tendon last season. Second-year man Randy Gradishar has moved to middle linebacker.

The Broncos 1974 first-round draft pick was an all America selection at Ohio State. Gradishar saw limited action as a rookie at outside linebacker, but could develop into one of the top middle linebackers in the business. Ohio State coach Woody Hayes said, "Gradishar is the finest linebacker I have ever had at Ohio State." Hayes has been known for developing great defenses and physical college offenses for many years. Veteran Ray May will move to the outside and will join young Tom Jackson at the outside linebacker spots. May was forced into playing inside last year and feels more at home outside because of his quickness.

The defensive backfield, which was the most questionable area in the Broncos' organization last year, could take a new look. John Rowser, Calvin Jones and Billy Thompson will start the game with John Pitts. Rookie Louis Wright will play along with a number of prospects to find just the right combination in the defensive backfield. Wright, this year's first-round draft pick, just returned from the all-star game against Pittsburgh. Thompson is the only defensive back that has a secure position.

The others will be working for the three remaining spots. Tickets for the Broncos' preseason games are available in Greeley at Gregory's Clothing Store. Gregory's has tickets for all three home preseason games. A crowd of 30,000 is expected Cor the home opener and the game will not be televised. Jim Murray Most Valuable Player? But the problem is, whose MVP are you talking about? The newspapermen like the guy who wins pennants. The gamblers like the guy who wins bets.

The fans like the guy who wins games. But the owners like the guy who sells seats. The highest-priced player of all time is James (Catfish) Hunter, who cost the Yankees $3.75 million (the franchise, with Yankee Stadium and Joe DiMaggio thrown in, only cost Del Webb and Dan Topping $2.8 million in 1945). You are pretty sure nobody consulted Wayne Reynolds, a young economics major at San Diego State, before joining the auction for pitcher Hunter. Because Wayne got an in Economics 130A with a documented thesis this year that Catfish Hunter, far from being a "Goldfish" Hunter, was actually a liability to the franchise at the box office of the Oakland A's last year.

Young Reynolds found out that, in 1974, the Oakland A's averaged 11,113 i'ans a game except when their star, Catfish Hunter, pitched. Then the attendance averaged only 7,661 fans a game. Some 3,452 fans a game stayed away on the nights he pitched. Reynolds deduces Hunter cost the franchise $10,356 per appearance, or a drop of $196,664 in seasonal home game revenues. On the road, Hunter did much belter --193 more per game than the rest of the staff.

(The A's drew twice as many per game on the road as they did at home.) Perhaps this is the fate of star pitchers? Not so, says young Wayne. Sandy Koufax generated an increase in home-game 1 revenues of $182,096 in his last year, and an increase in away- game revenues of $54,081 over the year. Reynolds computes that Koufax 1 retirement resulted in a $381,376 revenue loss to the Dodgers the following season. He marks the total, $617,554, as Koufax' "marginal revenue" to the club, and concludes that Koufax, at $130,000 per season, was a bargain for the O'Malleys. Reynolds' thesis purports to show Catfish cost the Oakland A's i4 in revenue in 1974.

He didn't attempt to find out why. What of the picture since Catfish left? Well, as of July 13, (he Oakland A's were a rousing 169,472 ahead of last years' attendance. And, Reynolds' study, able only to compute the first few weeks of Hunter's starts this year, noted that, as of then, Hunter was averaging 15,221 fans per appearance, but that the other Yankee pitchers were averging 17,206. Hunter, he thus claimed, was averaging $5,955 at the gate less than the more conventionally priced pitchers. The moral of this slory: If you're going to go out and spend $3.75 million for a pitcher, go out and get one who can do card tricks or shoot himself out of a cannon.
