24 GKKRLEY (Colo.) TRIBUNE July 1975 Documentary highlights space defenfe by THOMAS JOSEPH By JAY SHARBUTT AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) Millions of words already have been written about next Tuesday's historic joint space flight of American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts. But if you'd like a concise, well-organized video briefing on what it's all about and how il came about, tune in ABC's "Union in Space" documentary this Sunday night. Reported by Jules Bergman, it's an uncommonly thorough, yet easy-to-undersland study of what has been called a mission of "high-flying detente" between the Soviet Union and the United States. The first part uses Soviet and American film clips to illustrate the start of the great space race of the two countries, which began in October 1957 with Russia's launching of the Sputnik satellite. It goes from there to a well- edited recap of the successes and failures of both countries in space, following that up with how next Tuesday's Apollo-So- vuz night got started in the first place.

There also are fascinating glimpses of the history, technology and major figures of Russia's manned space program, plus quick, often humorous looks at American astronauts in Russia and Russian cosmonauts training here. But Bergman, a veteran space flight reporter for ABR, doesn't get carried away by the euphoria accompanying the new spirit of Soviet-American cooperation. somberly reminds that even with the new spirit, there's still "tight discipline and secrecy" surrounding Rus- sia's space program. Baikonur Cosmodrome, 1,400 For example, he says that miles southeast of Moscow, even though the Russians say "that turns out, as many of us their launch site is at the suspected, to be just not true. Reruns top television ratings NEW YORK (AP) Reruns of series were the most popular shows on television last week, but CBS' "60 minutes" news program, premiering in its summer prime-time slot, also was among the nation's highest-rate shows.

The program, which is broadcast from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. EOT on Sundays this summer, was ranked 21st in viewer popularity out of 62 shows rated last week by the A.C. Nielsen Co. The Nielsen audience samples, made public Wednesday, showed that a CBS summer variety series starring Joey Heatherton had a good ratings start, registering 24th in viewer popularity. According to the Nielsen estimates, the 20 most-watched evening shows last week were "Hawaii Five 0" (CBS); "S.W.A.T" (ABC); "MASH," "All in the Family," "Rhoda," "The Jeffersons" and "Medical Center 1 (all CBS); "Police Woman" (NBC); "Bob Newhart" (CBS); "The Rookies" (ABC); "Barnaby Jones," "Mary Tyler Moore" and "Kojak" (all CBS); "Baretta" (ABC); "The Rockford Files" (NBC); "Maude" (CBS); "Caribe" (ABC); "Good Times" and "Cannon" (CBS), and "Harry 0" (ABC).
