The school board and the Merrill Area Education Association negotiating team had reached preliminary agreement on provisions of the contract Monday night. The agreement must still be formally ratified by the school board.

School Supt. Roger Lowney said, however, that he anticipates the board will ratify the agreement since the entire board acted as its own negotiating team. Lowney said details of the agreement will be released after he and Patrick Buick, chairman of the teachers' negotiating team, have worked out wording of the master contract, probably sometime next week. Lowney did, however, announce the 1972-73 school year calendar which was part of the agreement, noting that many residents use the school calendar as a basis for making plans. Calendar for the next school year lists 180 teaching days.

The Memorial Day weekend officially begins at 6 p.m. Friday and ends at midnight Monday.

Sheriff Alfred Giese said all available cars in his department will be patrolling roads and highways during the weekend and extra deputies will be working to assist regular deputies. "We like to see everyone have fun when they come to Lincoln County, but ask them to be alert' to highway and traffic conditions and not mix drinking and driving," said Giese. He said a traffic bottleneck is anticipated at the Highway 51 and 64 intersection in Merrill during peak traffic flows and patience will be the key for local and out of town drivers in handling the situation. Merrill Police Chief Gerald Plautz said he expects the heaviest traffic on Highway 51 late Friday night and Saturday morning. Stop lights at the Highway 51-64 intersection will probably be controlled manually for much of the weekend.
