GRANTON DEFENSE STOPS ATHENS, 68-51 GRANTON A rugged defense powered the Granton Bulldogs to a 68-51 win over Athens here Tuesday in Marawood Conference action. Bulldog coach Gary Novak praised the defensive play of senior center Dave Garbisch, who limited conference scoring leader Ken FelzkowsM to four points in the second half, and 18 points in the game. Another defensive ace for Granton was Mike Schultz who recorded seven steals. Offensively the Bulldog attack was well balanced, something which is becoming a characteristic in Granton basketball Four players hit double figures, as Rick Bartsch, Schultz, Garbisch, and Lubo Hanuszczak hit 17, 13, 12, and 12 points respectively for Granton. Garbisch and Bartsch also grabbed 16 and 15 rebounds respectively in leading the Bulldogs to a 62-54 edge in that department.

You'ro Sat WiSon You Savm At matt REDMEN WIN FIRST BY 54-51 RIB LAKE Fouls proved the difference in the outcome of the game here Tuesday as the Rib Lake Redmen climbed out of the Marawood Conference cellar with a 54-51 win over victory less Abbotsford. Five Abbotsford players fouled out of the contest, as 34 personals were whistled against the Falcons. The big blow to the Falcon attack occurred late in the third quarter when Ed Zwirchitz, the lone big man on the team, fouled out with Abbotsford holding a four point lead.

The Falcons actually outshot the Redmen, hitting 36 per cent, Youth hockey Riverview and John Marshall rinks played to a 2-2 standoff Tuesday in Squirt hockey as the Wausau Youth Hockey Association opened its season at Marshall Rink. The season had been scheduled to open Monday, but heavy snow forced postponement. Dean Mertes put Riverview into a 1-0 lead with a goal off the opening faceoff, but Dominic Bush tied it for Marshall at 4:30 of the first period. Marshall went into the lead for the first time in the second period as Mark Olejniczak scored at 4:00, but Mertes tied it at 3:50 of the final period. Marshall's David Olejniczak made 10 saves during the game, while Riverview's Brian West-burg warded off five Marshall shots.

Stratford won its fourth consecutive game in upping its record to 5-3, as Paul Thorpe and Tom Krause provided a one-two punch, hitting 25 and 24 points respectively in the Tigers 91-41 mauling of Spencer. Elsewhere Tuesday, the Rib Lake Redmen won the duel of the cellar dwellers, edging Abbotsbord 54-51 for their first victory of the season over the still victory less Falcons.
