Fort Lauderdale News. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1970 3D Sun Devils, Tar Heels Vie In Peach Bowl The Tar Heels, meanwhile, averaged 411, with 285 of that coming on the ground. Spagnola passed for 1,991 yards and added 173 on the ground'. McCauley, a 208-pounder, broke the NCAA season rushing mark by running for 1,720 yards for the Atlantic Coast Conference team, which won eight and lost three.

J. D. Hill, a 9.3 sprinter, heads the ASU receiver corps while fullback Bob Thomas and halfback Monroe Eley accounted for more than 1,600 yards on the ground for the Western Athletic Conference champions. Although Carolina seldom passes, quarterback Paul Miller compiled a 60 per cent completion mark, hitting on 48 of 80 passes for 728 yards and eight touchdown. TV: Channels 7 and 12 at 8 p.m.

ATLANTA. UP) Undefeated Arizona State, the nation's No. 8 power, and ball control-minded North Carolina collide tonight in the third annual Peach Bowl football game, a post-season event that has been plagued by rain the last two years. A day-long rain yesterday soaked Georgia Tech's Grant Field, site of the 8 p.m. kickoff, but the weather bureau forecast fair and cool weather for the game.

Each of the two previous Peach Bowls has been played in rain. Bill Dooley, the Tar Heel coach who counts on a ground assault led by All-American running back Don McCauley, would welcome more rain to slow down the speedy Sun Devils, who have six offensive performers who sprint 100 yards in 9.8 sec onds or better. "After thinking about their speed, I'm a more firm believer in tradition now than ever before," said Dooley, whose Tar Heels are a six-point underdog. While Dooley frets about speed, ASU Coach Frank Kush, possessor of the second winningest record by percentage in college football, says that speed won't mean much if the Sun Devils can't get the ball. Dooley's game plan is simple, he says.

"We have to control the ball, grind it out and keep the ball out of their hands." 1 Arizona State trimmed 10 straight foes, averaging 37.5 points per game. Led by Joe Spagnola, the Sun Devils led the nation in total offense, averaging 514 yards per game. Brown Edges Shula Deacons' Coach Snubs Seminoles As AFC Top Coach News Win Services With the help of the National Football League's realignment, Paul Brown lopped two years off his five-year plan and was named the American Football Conference's Coach of the Year by United Press International for the second straight year. The 62-year-old Brown said, when he took over the expansion Cincinnati Bengals in 1968, that he had a five-year plan to make his club a contender. He got a two-year jump when the NFL and the American Football League merged into six divisions.

Brown's Bengals righted themselves it after an appalling 1-6 start this season and rushed victoriously through their remaining seven games to beat out Cleveland, Pitts-burhg and Houston for the AFC Central crown Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins was second with 14 votes to Brown's 16. Don McCafferty of the Baltimore Colts, Hank Stram of the Kansas City Chiefs and John Madden of the Oakland Raiders received one each. quarterback Joe Theismann credits with his improvement this year, doesn't agree with him on the suitability of the Astroturf footing in the Cotton Bowl for the New Year's Day return match against Texas. It isn't exactly the footing that bothers the Irish split end who caught 77 of Theis-mann's 155 pass completions for 1,123 yards and seven touchdowns during Notre Dame's 9-1 season. Theismann had said earlier that he liked the synthetic turf and thought it gave the offensive backs and receivers an edge over the defense in the matter of cutting because they knew which way they were going.

"That's right," Gatewood said, "up to a point. What I don't like about it, is that there is a fine dust coming off the surface and it gets on your hands and makes pass-catching more difficult." The 1971 Gator Bowl may go down as the strangest in the classic's 26 years of existence. It's off to a weird start Ole Miss and Auburn will be there without a head coach. Auburn Coach Ralph "Snug" Jordan was sidelined by an emergency appendectomy and announced he would not be able to attend the Tiger-Rebel showdown. Johnny Vaught, the Rebels' head coach, is recovering from a heart attack and acting Coach Frank Kinard will be at the helm.

News Wirt Services Cal Stoll removed himself from consideration for the Florida State head coaching job yesterday and said he will stay in Winston-Salem, N.C., to strengthen Wake Forest's football program. Stoll, who took over the Wake Forest job when the team was losing two years ago, led the Deacons to their, first Atlantic Coast Conference championship this year. He had been reported likely to succeed resigned FSU Coach Bill Peterson, who moved to Rice last week, but said he does not want the job. "This decision is based on the fact that I believe our Wake Forest football program is on solid ground and I have a commitment to this university and a group of fine young men to finish the job we started two years ago," said Stoll. Oklahoma's Wishbone-T offense will be a brand new experience for Alabama in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston tomorrow.

Matter of fact, it is something new for the Sooners as well. Oklahoma Coach Chuck Fairbanks switched from the Veer-T to the Wishbone during the open week before meeting Texas because he found his Sooners did not have the passing attack to execute the Veer-T. Tom Gatewood, the man Notre Dame 31 plays for the winning touchdown against the New York Giants in the National Foot- ball League title game called since the greatest game ever played. Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys is trying to make it sound like his team's passing attack is in trouble. Dick Nolan, the other head coach in Sun- a day's NFC championship game in San Francisco, takes the talk lightly.

"When you've got all that running, you don't need to pass too much," Nolan said yesterday as the San Francisco 49ers held their first practice of the week. Landry said that his No. 1 quarterback, Craig Morton, has a sore right elbow and a cut on his right hand. He said Morton didn't throw yesterday but planned to start today. But there's nothing wrong with Duane Thomas and Walt Garrison, the leading backs in a Cowboy running attack that gained 2,300 yards this year.

Landry said he has been calling all offensive plays for the team since it? 38-0 loss to St. Louis seven weeks ago "to take the pressure off Morton." The Cowboys haven't lost since. The 49ers have proved they can score in any kind of weather. Now they have to prove they can score against the Dallas defense. Last Sunday, San Francisco traveled to cold-weather country, Minnesota, but the low temperatures didn't seem to bother quarterback John Brodie as he led the club to an upset 17-14 win over the Vikings.

Two weeks jjgo, the 49ers exploded for 38 points on a wet and muddy field in Oakland against the Raiders. ---mroimW Sunday's AFC title game in Baltimore between the Colts and Raiders brings together the only two quarterbacks in pro football with sudden-death experience, Johnny Unitas and George Blanda. Blanda was a loser in 1962, when his Houston Oilers bowed to the Dallas Texans after 17 minutes and 54 seconds of overtime in the American Football League championship game the longest game ever played. Unitas still is remembered as the conquering hero of that bone-chilling day in 1958, when he steered the Colts 70 yards in Sound's likt nuH'plW cation; Guess igain (AP Wlrephoto) THE GENERAL The 49ers' star quarterback, John Brodie, calls the signals in San Francisco as the club prepares for the NFC title game with Dallas Sunday. tissue. (Continued from Page ID) Indeed, he can. As a sophomore, Brownson set a Nebraska record for completion percentage with a .653 mark. Although injured early in the season, he came back to lead the Huskers past Kansas State, Oklahoma and then Georgia in the Sun Bowl. In two seasons, the 181- pounder has thrown for 1,431 yards and 11 TDs.

But injuries have slowed his progress. Brownson was going to be the starter this past season, bur7 a recurrence of an elbow injury he received in the spring kept him from playing until the fifth game against Missouri. He started the second half and engineered a 91-yard drive which he capped with a one-yard sneak to break a 7-7 tie and an eventual 27-7 victory; "We're used to sharing the position," says Brownson. "As long as you keep the team scoring, you know you're going to stay in. If you falter at all, then Jerry is coming in.

"It's friendly competition and it's good for the team." Coach Bob Devaney won't argue that point. Nebraska has averaged 37 points a game and 421 yards a game in offense- en route to a No. 3 ranking this season. "Brownson would have been first string when the season started," said Devaney, "but he injured his elbow. He started the Kansas, Oklahoma State and Colorado games, but was hurt against Colorado and didn't play the rest of the sea-s He is ready now, though." Against Kansas, Brownson passed for two TDs and ran for another.

He was also instrumental in the other two victories. "Both are adequate runners and passers," continued Devaney, "but combined they are as good as anybody in the country." Kansas Coach Pepper Rodges calls them the "best two quarterbacks in the nation." That statement would be heatedly debated by Joe Theismann, Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning and Rex Kern buffs, but once again performance seems to bear out the remark. Combined, Brownson and Tagge passed for 2,042 yards and 18 touchdowns and a 637 completion mark. WJ5 (Continued from Page ID) In with the new. He's only 32." Just a kid, Burt thought.

We got a kid coaching Miami. I never would have dreamed "I dreamed Bill Peterson left Florida State," he said, point blank. "He did." "Leave?" "Left." Really, this was too much. Coach Pete gone. Charlie gone.

Dolphins 10-4. Curci arrives. "Where did he go?" "Rice." Burt moved slowly, like a man in shock, circling around the foot of the bed back to his side. From memory he stepped wide around the sleeping dog, planting his foot instead on top of one of his son's steel matchbook toys. "Ooof," he grunted.

Pain hurts. "You're telling me Bill Peterson went to Rice after 11 years at Florida State. You're telling me I'm not dreaming when you say a man goes to Rice to coach football after he turned down jobs with the San Francisco 49ers and the Buffalo Bills? You're me all that." Maybe, he thought, she's on the martinis. She's funny. This could be her idea of a lesson for me or something.

"Carlos Alvarez helped form an athletes' union at the University of Florida?" he said. "Doug Dickey had a 7-4 season, finishing by losing to Walt Kichefski's Hurri- i canes?" She nodded. "Wal-ter Ki-chef-ski's Hur-ri-canes," he said carefully. "I thought I dreamed that." He climbed into bed and eased himself back, exhaling slowly. He ground out his cigaret.

He looked over at his wife. "10-4?" he asked. "10-4." He pulled the covers over his head so that it was full dark. One more day and it's a new year. LSU's Tiger (Continued from Page ID) fullback in high school, but he wanted to play defense for us.

With an attitude like that, we weren't surprised he became a good football player." And a rugged one. Mike has had four off-season operations on his left knee, but has never missed a varsity game for LSU. He plays no matter what condition his knee is in. Anderson is ffom Baton Rouge, the home of LSU. He is the second home-grown All-America linebacker the Tigers have had in two years.

George Bevan, also of Baton Rouge, wasjin All-America selection last year. Two Tigers made the first-team All-America lists this season. Anderson was joined on the. squad by defensive, back Tommy Casanova. Anderson began to emerge as a strong candidate for post-season honors when three LSU defensive backs were injured in the Texas game.

"That put a lot more pressure on the linebackers in pass defense situations," said Hamley, "and Mike did a terrific job." In Friday's Orange Bowl game between LSU and Nebraska, the outcome could be decided by the success of Joe Orduna in running straight at the LSU defense. The Cornhuskers like to give Orduna the ball and let him look for a hole. And most of the time Anderson will be looking for Orduna. "Nebraska doesn't try to trick you very often," said Hamley. "Usually, they just Come straight at you.

They use fewer formations than most teams. They go with mostly the I-slot and the pro-set. They don't give you a lot of problems as far as making adjustments are concerned. But they do have some tricky pass patterns." The Cornhuskers don't pass often, but have completed 60 per cent of their attempts and can be expected to throw more often than usual against LSU's strong rushing de-. fense.

On the other hand, the Tigers probably won't blitz very often. "We aren't riiuch of a blitzing team," said Hamley.
